So I'm feeling very silly - I thought I had this one on my kindle (it was bundled with Leviathan Wakes, which I was totally unaware of until I came to the end of the book at only 50% read) which is why I nominated it in the first place, but I just opened it up and it turns out that it's The Dragon's Path by the same author - dangit!

Oops! That is book 1 of The Dagger and the Coin series, I think.
