A novel with crime in it pages as opposed to a crime novel. Some supernatural elements also. 4/5

I think you must be more of a Slade man than me - I had to look that one up!

Advise for writers. Enjoyable and entertaining. I think I'd have fun reading Block's shopping list. 4/5

Simon (toastermantis) | 203 comments Thanks for these posts, Lawrence Block is the only of these authors whom I have even heard of. Looks like a good place to find good but less well known literature in the crime genre.

Cheers Simon. I hope you find some good reading amongst these.

Simon (toastermantis) | 203 comments sounds like an interesting read, one that really captures the "genius loci" of Edinburgh like Chandler and Ellroy did with LA or Siménon with Paris

I'll go with the Ellroy analogy. I've not read enough of the other two to make the comparison.

Simon (toastermantis) | 203 comments Ellroy's basically where Chandler would go if not restrained by 1930s era censors.

Simon (toastermantis) | 203 comments The Evan Tanner novels of Block's sound like something I might find interesting, it looks like the author shares my interest in obscure political/religious history and crafting suspense novels around them but in a less ham-fisted manner than Dan Brown et al. I guess he's trying to do for other historical conspiracies what Hammett did for the Knights Hospitaller in "The Maltese Falcon"?

An enjoyable enough murder mystery, set against a back drop of paedophilia. 3.5/5

I'm enjoying time spent in old Europe, the one I grew up in. I find Block's observations quite astute with all that came to pass afterwards.
