When Lauren and Ryan’s marriage reaches the breaking point, they come up with an unconventional plan. They decide to take a year off in the hopes of finding a way to fall in love again. One year apart, and only one rule: they cannot contact each other. Aside from that, anything goes.

Lauren embarks on a journey of self-discovery, quickly finding that her friends and family have their own ideas about the meaning of marriage. These influences, as well as her own healing process and the challenges of living apart from Ryan, begin to change Lauren’s ideas about monogamy and marriage. She starts to question: When you can have romance without loyalty and commitment without marriage, when love and lust are no longer tied together, what do you value? What are you willing to fight for?

Falling out of love and just not being able to reconnect. I feel like Ryan gets angry very easily though which is frustrating! (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ Ryan’s emails killed me. From Lauren’s perspective, it seemed like he didn’t really care so I wrote him off. But after reading the emails it’s clear that he’s hurting just as badly as Lauren. Apparently he’s met someone else now. I hope Lauren takes steps towards healing and keeps an open mind about finding love again with someone else. That’ll be the true test (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Little brother Charlie is having a baby. The convo about the meaning of marriage got pretty intense. I kind of agree with everyone's philosophy a little. Grandma has a point in staying together for the kids because they come first. I admire Charlie for "doing the right thing" in marrying Natalie, but agree with his mom that they need to date more first. Just because you have a kid doesn't mean they should get married. Especially since they don't really know each other yet. But I can relate to Charlie in that they don't want coparenting for their kid because he wants what he didnt have growing up: a two parent household.

Good for Lauren kind of moving on from Ryan and discovering what she wants out of the marriage. I wonder if her and that other divorced guy will end up together, though I don't think so because he doesn't seem that into it (hide spoiler)]

I will say it bothered me that he completely overlooked marriage counseling on her list and went straight into wanting to do the open marriage. That was annoying. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I really can't stand Lauren. Her reading Ryan's e-mails was so wrong to me. She had no right and even though her sister and Mila told her that, she continued to do it until she got her feelings hurt by seeing that he's started seeing someone else.

And I don't like Ryan either. :/ I don't know what it is but he seems kinda scummy to me. I think this book should've been told from both of their point of views. (hide spoiler)]
