Joan Barnett | 1972 comments Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza—but who knows what they'll find seven months after the invasion?

Meanwhile, Kady's cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza's ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys—an old flame from Asha's past—reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.

With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heroes will fall, and hearts will be broken.

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I didn't like this one as much as the first two in the series. I just didn't connect with the characters like I did in the others. The different format wasn't as fun the third time around either. I think I saw somewhere that a fourth book was coming out. I'll probably still end up reading it but this was a lackluster end to the series for now.

I read it for the 2019 challenge prompt #32 - A book with more than 500 pages.

I just finished this recently as well.

I’m not sure if it’s because there was a big gap in my reading but I didn’t enjoy the second two nearly as much as the first one. Maybe it was also just because the format was so new and exciting with the first one. I liked Katy and Ezra, especially their dialogue, so much more in the beginning.

I looked at my ratings of the books. The first one I rated 5 stars, the second 4 stars and the 3rd 3 stars. I remember only giving the second one a 4 star because I liked the ending but somewhere in the middle it was kind of lackluster.

I agree about the dialogue for Katy and Ezra. That's what sucked me in on the first book and I was surprised at how well the connection worked with the format that it was written in.
