Anthony (albinokid) | 1478 comments From among newer works, I can without reservation recommend The Fifth Season, the first book in The Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. It’s a visionary, thoroughly modern, award-winning masterpiece.

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Hi there, I checked out your shelves and see that you like a little romance in your fantasy. I can’t suggest anything along those lines, because I don’t read it, I think you might like the Science Fiction by Catherine Asaro. She considers herself an SF-romance writer. The Skolian Saga is really good.

Also any of McCaffrey’s other SF. I see you’ve read a few of the PERN novels. Personally, I enjoyed Killashandra and also The Ship Who Sang.

I’m on the app, so no links - sorry.

Maria V. Snyder's Poison Study starting with Poison Study

Honestly I don't think I'm a huge long series person. I usually quit after book three or four because it feels as if the author is making up things just to keep the series going or changes the character to add more drama and books. For instance I really liked the Pern series by McCaffrey, but only made it through book three. Really liked Lynn Kurland's books in the series the Nine Kingdoms and Maria Snyder's Healer and Study series to name a few. I'm up to trying anything, but usually like humor mixed into the books I read.

It doesn't have to have huge romance. I was actually reading those so my sister-in-law and I could connect and have something to talk about. Many of those books that are heavy in romance, and I mean heavy were her picks. Many had cool story lines, but to be honest I skipped the heavy romance parts because that's not me.

They sound intriguing, I'll have to look into them. Thank you!

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Ah, ok! I was going by the content of your lists, but if that’s more representative of your sister, then let’s see...

How about the Black Prism? It’s an upcoming group read, Fantasy and very good! Virtually no romance!

I know you said you get bored by long series, but I can’t recommend the Realms of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb highly enough. It starts with the Farseer Trilogy and “Assassin’s Apprentice”.

If you like Dragons and obscure, try Melanie Rawn’s Dragon Prince (and the next 2).

Trilogies within a series are good. I'll have to look into your suggestions they look intriguing, love dragons :)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments One of my favourite fantasy authors is Mark Lawrence. His Book of the Ancestor trilogy starting with Red Sister is excellent.

Robin Hobbs books are great too and they come in handy groups of three starting with Assassin’s Apprentice.

I also really like Laini Taylor’s books. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is excellent. It’s the first in a trilogy. Another of her series starts with Strange the Dreamer. The second book is Muse of Nightmares.

Probably heaps more I like but I can’t think of them right now.
