P.d.r....hang in there! I've heard The Cloud Atlas takes a while to get in to but is worth it. I really need to read it myself haha.

The Sisters Brothers was a very different read for me - starting with it being a Western. Told in a very sparse style it really blew me away.
Next is Cinder.
I have to see what has happened to my Fleur de Lis request.
& I can't get hold of Angelfall. :(

& another blow. I'm on the Coromandel & the only library in our area that has Fleur de Lis is Pauanui - & they don't do interloans. Too small probably.

I'm thinking about Birdsong, but other than that, I'm only going to be reading my books & Cinder. (read The Writing Class first)

Darkpool | 1032 comments Oh, that fully sucks! I picked my copy of Fleur de Lis up at a salvation army store.

I'm going to try that (& our Sat markets) for that & Angelfall, as you never know. One of our second hand shops is expensive, the other collectables (although the owner sells non collectable books at the markets on the weekend) The other second hand book shop we had closed down a few months ago.

For numbering, either one post like Erica or as you go is fine as long as you can keep up with your numbers :) Happy reading! I knocked out my first book yesterday

1. Hunting Lila read 10/12 - 4 stars for this YA Paranormal. I've got a feeling this is only the tip of the paranormal iceberg and it's only gonna get better.

*Note: there are a couple copies available from Auckland library. Sorry I didnt think about availability for this one! If you can't pick up a copy, then you can substitute this one for any other YA Paranormal.

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1760 comments Hanging in Erica, but I see where Ms Catton got her ideas from. This is the new literary writing style, I believe. I do find it hard to link up to the characters as I read. There seems nothing I can empathise with.

Andrea Myers | 52 comments I'm currently reading On the Beach, Cloud Atlas and The Peripheral...but I'm not finding a lot of time to read, busy month.

Was aiming for 7 books from the pool but the rate I'm going I'll be lucky to get 4....will check back in when I can :)

message 59: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 1032 comments Woohoo, another one down. Should be able to pick up the pace a bit now that school has finished for the year. Going to start "On The Beach" as my next audiobook. I'm almost certain this book was name-checked in Trains and Lovers, which I read just a couple of months ago. I always find it quite fascinating how completely unrelated books that I happen to read in a short space of time can have utterly unexpected connections.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 1370 comments Mod
Enjoyed Cinder & will probably read the sequel in the new year. Going to take a brief break from the challenge as I finally got Rebecca from the library. It has been on loan almost constantly, so I want to read it quickly, in case it's requested.

Just finished my third book On The Beach by Nevil Shute (added to list in message 35).

I can imagine this would've been harrowing reading at the time of the Cold War. At times I wished he'd taken the time to pad the book out with a bit more detail but overall it was a good read. I gave it 4*.

Next up is Transgressions.

Hi was this trip impromptu or planned? Have a great time.

I'll just mention my Mum very unwell, so I may not be around much.Just home having a break from the rest home now!

Planned trip, but I only just realised last night that I won't be able to update here as much as some people may like.

Carol, sorry to hear about your Mum. Wishing her good health.

message 70: by Sweetp-1 (new)

Sweetp-1 | 402 comments 1. Angelfall. Really enjoyed it and am reading the second book now.
2. Tomorrow when the war began. Slow start and then totally enthralling. Loved the Australian setting and the teenage voice.

Currently reading War of the Shadows :) Maybe Birdsong after that.

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1760 comments Could not finish Cloud Atlas. Totally fed up of the nasty deceitful, conniving bastard characters and their grubby lives. Worse than the postmoderns.

Finished a whole list of thrillers and the delightful 'Mr Mac and Me'Mr Mac and Me Mr Mac and Me by Esther Freud

Just knocked off:
4. Transgressions picked by Carol.

I thought it was pretty good. I never read thrillers so was a change for me. Thanks for including it in the book pool Carol :)

message 73: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 1032 comments I have a feeling I may have to roll this challenge through into next year! I'm probably only going to get 5 finished this month and there are so many tempting books on the list... although I may pass on Cloud Atlas! I really enjoyed Black Swan Green by the same author, but the size of CA intimidates me, and Pdr, you make it sound completely unappealing!

message 74: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Myers | 52 comments Well I finally got one read!

1. On the Beach 18/12/14

message 75: by Sweetp-1 (new)

Sweetp-1 | 402 comments Reading War of the Shadows at the moment. I read The Blessings of Stefan (now renamed as The Gardener Who Could See) by the same author earlier this year which has stayed with me the whole year. This is SO different, and an interesting 'what if' type scenario based on civil war in NZ resulting from an economic crisis following the chch eq.

message 76: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 1032 comments finshed #4 fleur de lis. three and a half stars. found the historical detail more interesting than the romance.

Hello all. My mother sadly passed away on Boxing Day.

I read so much at the Rest Home I'm not feeling much like reading now, so I won't get any further in the challenge.

I am part way through one of Georgette Heyer's lesser books - Charity Girl. Just had to take the reading material they had! :/

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1760 comments Ouch! Not a nice way to spend Christmas and difficult isn't it to be torn with hating to see a parent go yet hating to see them struggle through dementia/alzheimers!?

I have extract promises from my dears that if it happens to me we have a great party and then I finish it myself.

message 91: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 1032 comments A big thank you to Kathleen for nominating 44 Scotland Street, which I've just finished. I really enjoyed it, and find myself most relieved that the series continues so I can find out what happens next to Bertie and all the rest.

message 92: by Sweetp-1 (new)

Sweetp-1 | 402 comments Well I read Birdsong earlier this month which means Ive read 3/3 of books I nominated for the Dec book pool. Birdsong was also on my patient bookshelf challenge so feeling good I have finally read it. Interesting, if somewhat horrifying and heartbreaking.

I see there is a Gallipoli series starting soon on TV1. Not sure if I have the fortitude to watch it though....
