In my personal opinion, "Monster", by Walter Dean Myers, is a thoroughly underwhelming piece of exploitative mediocrity. The book is about sixteen year old Steve Harmon of African American heritage on trial for murder. This revelation alone should be sufficient to raise some red flags in the more literate, seeing as how the boy is clearly a compilation of numerous controversial topics. That being combined with an incredibly pretentious writing style in the form of a screenplay that has a fetish for fades and closeups, leaves one with a book more focused on style than substance. All of these factors lead me to believe that the book is intent of making the reader think it's saying more than it actually is. I learned nothing from the story other than how NOT to write a screenplay, nor did I enjoy it. I give this story a 2 out of 5 stars, simply because it is still more competent than Twilight.
