I have a confession to make: I already finished this book today 🙈. Will wait to post my thoughts until more people started reading, but I can say that you are all in for another action packed ride!

Ilona, LOL! At least you waited until September to read the last page! In my opinion, you don't need to wait to post your thoughts as long as you use spoiler tags.
I know I sometimes forget what I wanted to say about a book if I wait too long. :D
Also....seeing your impressions hidden under a spoiler provides great incentive for the rest of us to read the book, too.

Well, I only started yesterday, so I actually read most of the book in September ;) These books are a lot shorter than the original trilogy, so it takes me less time than I would expect.

I started reading Shadows of Self today and am about 25% through the book.

I'm a little over halfway done now and I have several comments.

(view spoiler)[The Village: Fascinating backstory about Wax being The Terris Elder's grandson.

Steris Harms: I'm really starting to like Steris. She is honest to a fault and I appreciate how she gives Wax so much space to be himself. I wonder why the author felt that he had to describe Steris as being such a physically unattractive woman.
I liked that whole episode where she had Wax Push them up together to the top of the tower for the governor's party.

Wayne: Why is Wayne so mean and insulting to Steris?
Is he jealous because he thinks Wax's marriage to Steris will weaken his relationship with Wayne? His suggestion to Steris that she "do the noble thing" by loaning Wax money so Wax would be free to find someone he really loves deliberately aimed to hurt Steris's feelings. Why?

I finished this book yesterday. A very enjoyable read!

Random thoughts
(view spoiler)[Wayne: I'm still annoyed by how Wayne can be such a charmer with Melaan and Ranette, then be so mean to Steris.
Dude, get over your bromance already! Wayne cannot heal Wax's heartache.
Bleeder: Wow, what a plot twist! I did NOT see that coming! Sazed, you have some 'splaining to do!
Steris: Awww, that last scene between Wax and Steris. *sniffle, sniffle (hide spoiler)]

Looking forward greatly to Bands of Mourning. I only wish we could read the last book in this Wax & Wayne series this year!

(view spoiler)[ I loved the idea of the village and was really surprized that Wax having Terris family. I really hope we will see more of the Terris people in the next books.

I think that Sterris is now my favourite character in the books. She is such a smart, honest and realistic woman! I feel that the author is still pushing us to ship Wax and Marasi, but I do not. Sterris is much better for him, even though there seems to be no romantic love (yet), there is an equal friendship and respect.

While Wayne is my second favourite character (he is just so funny), I am also annoyed by his behaviour towards Steris. I expect he wants Wax to have what he had with Lessie.

About this series in general:
(view spoiler)[I am a bit disappointed that there seems to be little connection between the books. Like, will we ever find out if all of this has something to do with Wax's uncle? Who's name comes up regularly, but doesn't seem to have a direct connection with the events in this book? (hide spoiler)]

I came to this thread because I saw that you'd finished this book.
That was quick!

Well I really enjoyed the characters and story. Like the rest of the books in the series I would like to read it again.
