Chapter 1 Devon Nyx entered the Council Meeting place and sat down, careful to keep a neutral expression. One wrong move, and it would be trouble. She and another member of the Council, Thana, had agreed to meet here, despite the fact that they could have met in the Private Meeting Room.
Thana walked down the hallway, getting ready to talk to another Council member. She checked her watch and hoped that this would be quick. She had a party to get to.
Devon Nyx tapped her perfectly manicured nails rhythmically on the table, staring at the ceiling. She did not acknowledge Thana immediately. "I do hope you realize that you are precisely 33 seconds and 28 milliseconds late."
"I was just making sure that..." Said Thana, searching for an excuse. "All the guards were at their posts. We can't risk any trespassers." She had actually just been busy kissing one of the other Council members.
Devon Nyx blinked. "Your memories must be false. You were too busying catching a snog to worry about upsetting important people, and now you're lying. I suggest you shut up or be smart." She smiled, showing her white teeth. "Now, what was it you wished to meet about?"
Thana rolled her eyes to show that she wasn't affected by Devon's comment. "Just a certain idiot on the Council that I think should be removed." Thana smirked. "I asked for your help because I've heard that you're quite good at sabotage."
Devon Nyx clicked her tongue. "I believe the term is removing those I see fit to move. As I am virtually fine with the Council, please, enlighten me on what's in it for me." She smirked, staring up at Thana. She crossed her leg and leaned back in her chair.
Thana moved her hair out of her face and sat down. "Robertson. He's utterly annoying and is anything but harsh on those truant kids. Plus, he's been on the Council forever. We need a fresh face." She looked at Devon for a sign of approval.
Devon Nyx snorted. "And you had no issues with him two months ago when he was your little buddy. But his brain seems to be slipping now that he's grown past 60. However, I do not find this incentive enough to off him. I suggest you try again with the gain for ME." Her smile broadened, and she wrung her hands together.
"I can get you anything you want. Remember, I run this show." Thana said, knowing that Devon remembers all of the times when she's...influenced the other Member's decisions.
"Pardon me for not wanting the results of your cat and some man's rooster in my cabinet. So, do you know what I do want?" She asked, standing up. When standing, she looked even more imposing and stood over a foot taller than the other woman.
"What do you want?" Thana glared right at Devon, trying not to look threatened in the least.
Devon Nyx smiled. "What I would like is for you to do what I say for three months and then you not off me or remove my authority afterwards." She quirked an eyebrow.
Thana considered this while twiddling with her thumbs. "Hmm. All right. Deal." She glanced up at Devon. "What do you have in mind?"
"Something that will only take a few minutes and threats," Devon Nyx replied, her blue eyes seeming almost silver and malicious in the lighting. "And it will help us defeat the Resistance." She licked her lips.
Thana smirked. "Now you're talking business. What's the plan?" She hated the Resistance. Absolutely despised it. More than most of the other Council Members. The sooner that it was destroyed, the better.
Devon Nyx swiped her tongue against the bottom of her teeth. She leaned in conspiratorially and whispered, "Spoilers, Eberstark. But I have everything I need. How about you come with me now to dispose of him?"
"Of course. Though I thought I saw him heading for the outskirts of town a few moments ago....or maybe that was Johnson, they look the same to me." Thana stared absentmindedly into space.
"One is a Spy and the other is a Council Member," Devon Nyx stated, rolling her frosty eyes. "Yes, I certainly do see the similarities. So we wait in his chambers?"
********************************************************************** Frost yawned and rubbed her eyes, surprised that the midday sun had only just woken her. The air was crisp, and a few leaves had fallen in Frost's hair while she slept.
Robertson walked into Witch's Park after having spent the last couple hours in a brothel. He saw a few homeless people and snorted.
Frost got up, and adjusted the symbol on her collar. Today it was the symbol for 'waiting for the next meeting'. Another member would go around and give signals to the rest to tell them when to meet. Frost was getting ready to go try and find something to eat when she saw a familiar face.
Robertson didn't like the fact these homeless people were here. Unlike the rest of the Council (or most thereof, he would not have them made an example of in public. "Howdy," he called to the sleepy girl.
Frost knew by his clothes and how he was looking at her that the man was a Council Member. "Hello, sir." She smiled, trying to look as inconspicuous as possible.
"It's a pretty day, isn't it?" he asked, looking directly at her. He winked and moved to the edge of the park. "Why are you not in school?"
"I...I don't have parents..." Frost said, doing her best to look like an innocent homeless girl.
"No excuse for truancy. School is mandatory for anyone between the ages of 8 and 16. Do you need an escort?" Robertson said, a smile on his face.
"I think I can manage." Frost said, slightly annoyed for this setback. "Do I need supplies?"
"You need to show up," Roberston said. "You should take advantage of what's given to you." He stepped closer.
"Yes, sir!" Frost said, trying to sound enthusiastic. She decided that going to school for the rest of the day could be interesting...and she could find out some useful info on what parents actually tell their kids about the Council.
Robertson nodded. "Go along, or I'll take you there myself." He made as if about to go along, but he was waiting to fully leave until he saw that frost was going to school.
Frost got up, gathered her few belongings, and headed to the school where students usually went during the day. It surprised her that nobody had ever stopped to tell her that she should be in school. Frost guessed it took a Council Member to complain about those things.
Robertson was satisfied and then left to head back to his chambers for a long sleep.
********************************************************* Devon Nyx and Thana waited for a couple hours in near silence for Robertson's return. At last, they heard steps in the hallway and then the creak of a door. And then, Robertson was in the room, seemingly unaware of their presence.
Thana could hear him whistling, obviously happy about something. He was just /so/ annoying. She waited for the cue from Devon.
The door shut, and Devon Nyx stepped out of the shadows. "Hello, Sextus," she said, a smirk crossing her features. She pulled a gun from her back pocket. "You're going to do something for me, or I shoot." She wasn't planning on shooting. It would ruin her plan. But she did have it in her.
"What?" Robertson said with a heavy sigh.
"You're going to swallow this pill," she held it out to show him, "and you're going to write a note about how you tried to explode yourself in honor of the Resistance to destroy the Council. It will further our plans to destroy the Resistance. So, how about it, Sextus?"
Robertson's hands shook. Feebly, he nodded. Then, he seemingly saw Thana for the first time.
Thana waved. "Hi." She said, standing up. The plan was going well, and she wasn't planning to say anything to ruin it.
Devon Nyx smiled at Robertson. "So, this is what you write: I am a member of the Resistance. I am writing this as I prepare to kill myself in order to destroy the Council." She waited for Robertson to finish writing. When he did, she grinned. She held out her hand to him, and he saw that it contained a pill. "Swallow this, and I'll do the rest." She quirked an eyebrow.
Trembling, he obeyed. Nothing happened to him immediately after.
"Thana, if you feel like staying alive, I suggest you run." Devon Nyx herself ran out and then ran down the hall to the Control Room.
*********************************************** Devon Nyx entered the Control Room, Thana a few steps behind her. There was the sound of human flesh exploding and a scream. The plan had worked. Devon Nyx made sure she looked no worse for the wear and smiled.
Now, time for part two of the plan. She had to broadcast a message that would make the Resistance look bad.
She wrote:
"Dear Citizens, this is a message from the Council. Listen.
A member of the Resistance entered the Council, and after years of negligent behavior, exploded himself to further the cause of the Resistance.
There is no hope for your Resistance.
Your Resistance is blind.
Your Resistance does not understand that the Council is explosion-proof. Your Resistance does not care to understand the situation.
What is the future under their lead?
Your Resistance would destroy the only government and leave you without a leader. If you think the world is bad now, there would be riots. Your buildings would burn. People would rise up in the streets and kill one another. Your City would crash and burn.
You would die.
Your Resistance is blind.
Your Resistance does not care for you.
Your Resistance would kill you."
She ended the message and sent it out. She looked up at Thana before beaming and sauntering out of the room.
