Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Our theme this month is Harrowing Haints. It's that time of year. Ghosts, goblins, the undead, and other creepers are front and center.

Choose at least 1 book that includes them OR
For a less grisly take on it, include a book where the dead are honored.

Our monthly read, My Soul to Keep definitely qualifies for this challenge.

So take advantage of that, or choose your own.

You can list your choices and goals here and/or on the widget.

https://www.goodreads.com/challenges/...

Have fun!

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments Eeeeee, this one excites me!

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Glad to hear it Anastasia!

I already read My Soul to Keep, so might just skim it so that I can join in the conversation.

My main focus this month will be to read all of the free preview books I have, and write reviews. I am seriously backlogged.

I think 3 of my books will fit in nicely with our theme. Going for a goal of 12 this month!

Carryovers
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (THEME)
Ruby (THEME)
The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments My copy of My Soul to Keep just came in the mail!

How are you liking Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children?

message 5: by Londa (new)

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments It's okay. At this point (about 20% in), I could take it or leave it. I suspect the pace will pick up soon because it is finally getting to the part about the 'home'. I am listening to it on audio.

message 6: by Anastasia Kinderman (last edited Sep 30, 2014 02:53PM) (new)

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments You listen to a lot of audio books (or so it seems). Is it easier for you to listen than read? Or do you do a lot of driving?

message 7: by Londa (new)

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments I do most of my listening in the car. Between dropping kids off and going to and from work, I log in quite a few hours behind the wheel. I have really gotten more into audio this year.

I too have gotten into audio books over the past year - this easily adds a couple of books to my reading schedule. My audio books are usually like mysteries or speculative fiction.

message 9: by Beverly (new)

Beverly I will sign up for 15 books.

Not sure what my theme book will be as I normally read speculative fiction. Maybe Authority or Stone Mattress.

Like Londa I am really behind on my reviews and will be concentrating on working on my Around the World in 80 books challenge.

message 10: by Maya (last edited Oct 01, 2014 04:44AM) (new)

Maya B | 825 comments Kindred is my choice. Not really into Scifi or paranormal like I use to be. I will read 1 book for the challenge. I hope this one qualifies. please let me know if it does not

I'm going for 8 again (I'll gonna get this goal accomplished one day)...not sure what my theme read will be.

message 12: by Londa (last edited Oct 01, 2014 06:29AM) (new)

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Beverly, both those sound good.

Great Maya! Kindred is a excellent choice. Not all the books we read for the monthly challenges have to fit the theme. It is just a good way for us to keep up with our reading.

Lulu...you will at least have one with My Soul to Keep :) Good luck with the other 7

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments I'll try and read eight this month. I have two books I'm reading for book clubs that will fit this theme: My Soul to Keep and The Haunting of Hill House. So excited!

message 14: by Londa (new)

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Anastasia I just read and listened to The Haunting of Hill House last month. I MUCH preferred reading it. I listened to it on audio first and gave it 3 stars. I increased it to 4 after I read it. The rich writing was so much more effective in written form.

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments Thanks for the tip, Londa! I'll be reading it, borrowed the ebook from my library.

message 16: by Linda (new)

Linda | 172 comments I'm reading My Soul to Keep. Maya, I read Kindred. I liked it very much. I hope you do as well. If I hadn't discovered Octavia Butler, I'm sure I never would have started My Soul to Keep.

message 17: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (goodreadscomtrudyspages) Ok, guys, I'm going for 4 books this month. I heard those giggles. LOL. However since I usually only get through 2, it's a start, right?

message 18: by Londa (new)

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Not giggling over here Trudy. 4 books a month is a good goal. Good luck!

Anastasia Kinderman | 942 comments I couldn't giggle even if I wanted to, I'm not having much luck with meeting my goal. xD

message 20: by Beverly (new)

Beverly Definitely no giggles - glad you joined the challenge and hope you have fun with it. Happy Reading!!
