Eliene | 38 comments Hello!
The book I'm looking for is either Childrens' or Middle Grade. It started out in a contemporary setting where a preteen/teen boy sees a woman asking for his help (could have been a vision). The woman could be Guinevere (of Arthurian legend) but I'm not sure. He may have been visiting his dad's or grandparents' place when he meets her. He finds out that he is either a descendant or an incarnation of King Arthur. The woman asks him to pull Excalibur from the stone. I also remember scenes of a misty lake and maybe an island.
I read it in 2001 or 2002.
Cover: blue and white showing an abstract mist-covered scene. This is most likely the UK edition cover because I read the book while living in the UK. The author may be British too but I'm not sure.

I've been looking for this book for years and I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

The Forever King by Molly Cochran?

Eliene, how many fantasy is there in the modern day setting?
Does the boy travel back to King Arthur's time?
Does the boy have companions?

Thanks for helping Kris!
There's some fantasy including visions of the lady. I vaguely remember them going to an island through a foggy lake. I don't recall if there's any time travel. But if there was it was a small portion near the end of the book. I don't think he had companions. I just remembered that the boy's last name was probably Pendragon.

I read a little bit of The Forever King but I don't think it's the one. Hal and the FBI stuff is unfamiliar.

Is the story set in modern day England? Small village or large city?

Juels | 3312 comments Did you check all the books on this list?

message 13: by Eliene (new)

Eliene | 38 comments I would say most of the story is set in modern day England in a small town or in the countryside.

It not The Golden Sword (too recent) and not Mists of Avalon.

I've gone through most of the list Juels but I'll take another look and check all the different editions to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Michele | 2488 comments Perhaps Susan Cooper's The Dark Is Rising sequence? It's set in modern day (mostly in Wales but part of it takes place in Cornwall) and the Arthur legends form a major part of the story. There are five books; in The Grey King a boy named Bran discovers his heritage as the Pendragon, and in Silver on the Tree there are two scenes where he and a few others are in a boat, one near the middle and the other right at the end. There are a lot of different covers for both boooks, and several look like sort of like what you describe.

Kimber (kimberlibri) | 158 comments I was scrolling through my Read list because the minute I saw this I also thought of The Dark is Rising series but I couldn't remember the name. I second Michele's guess.

message 16: by Eliene (new)

Eliene | 38 comments Thanks but I've read the summaries for the Dark is Rising series there are some similarities and I don't think it's the one. I especially don't think the "Merlin" character is in the book I'm looking for and the lake scenes and the boy seeing the lady happens in one book.

Barbara Brien | 151 comments Having read The Dark is Rising many, many times, I don't think any of the books is the one you're looking for, as none of them feature a scene pulling a sword from a stone. The only book that features a sword is the last, Silver on the Tree. Silver on the Tree for the link if you want to check it out.

Ket | 163 comments Winter of Magic's Return? In one of the reviews it says the blurb includes this line: "Everything changes when a striking woman arrives claiming she is Earl's aunt." The story begins in (what was) Wales prior to "the Devastation."

Winter of Magic's Return by Pamela F. Service or Winter Of Magic's Return by Pamela F. Service .

Eliene | 38 comments Christy, The cover for The Sleeping Sword is so close to what I had in mind! The synopsis isn't ringing any bells but I'm going to try and get my hands on a copy to check.

Eliene | 38 comments Solved!

I'm 98% sure it's The Sleeping Sword by Michael Morpurgo. Thank you so much Christy and everyone else!
The Sleeping Sword by Michael Morpurgo
My teacher in Y5/6 read this out loud to my class and it holds so many memories. I've been looking for it for almost 10 years. Some of the details in my initial post are way off the mark but I'm looking forward to rereading a childhood favourite.
