message 501: by Hildur (new)

Hildur (bokahaus) Hello everyone!
I'm new but since I went to the book shop yesterday I thought I should give it a go and post here.

I decided to reward myself a bit for staying in this weekend and behaving, so I got:
American Gods by Neil Gaiman (my first Gaiman so I'm excited).
The Stand by Stephen King (This seemed like the next logical step after reading Under the Dome).
Dís by Birna Anna Björnsdóttir (It's in Icelandic and I'm not sure if it's ever been released in another language)

I also borrowed some books from my friend
Choke (which I'm reading now) and Snuff, both by Chuck Palahniuk.

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments Hi Hildur! It's nice to see you around here. :)

I've never read American Gods, but I've read several Neil Gaiman books, and have enjoyed them all. Let me know what you think!

message 503: by Hildur (new)

Hildur (bokahaus) I definitely will! It's going to be my next one after Choke.

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments Oh Anna,I wish that you lived in Iowa. We'd be such good friends!

message 507: by Anna (new)

Anna Anderson (annaanderson) | 130 comments I know we would and we could share books, but we can get to be good friends on here as well. I have a neat story for you...I have been working for my dad for 12 or 13 years, but about 8 or 9 years ago, I would talk to a customer that we have almost daily. Well, she lived in Wilmington, N.C., which is about 3 hours from me in Greensboro and we got to be the best of friends and finally we just decided it was time for us to meet and one weekend I drove to Wilmington and ever since then we are just the best of friends. You know I have Crohns Disease and when she was 8 mo's pregnant, she was diagnosed and I really helped walk her through the stages of acceptance and now she helps me when I am having a rough time. It is just funny b/c people are like how did ya'll meet and we are like "over the phone". You never know, who you are going to meet or who is going to end up being a friend when you really need them!

message 508: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments Anna, too true! My husband is from the Netherlands, and though we met each other in Iowa, we started "dating" through email while I was living in Japan and he was in the Netherlands. It's always so strange to tell people the story... :)

The Earth really can be a small place!

message 509: by Anna (new)

Anna Anderson (annaanderson) | 130 comments Yes it can, I totally agree with you, sometimes it is too small (just meaning sometimes you run into people, you really don't want to :-) It never fails, when I just "run" to the grocery store in chill clothes, I ALWAYS run into someone we know, usually a guy that is like...yeah, you're looking good.

Well, I bought 4 MORE books today, they are:

Alice's Tulips
Jubilee Trail
New Mercies
The Diary of Mattie Spenser

I will squeeze them in somewhere!

message 510: by Anna (new)

Anna Anderson (annaanderson) | 130 comments Yep, it is me AGAIN...I just decided to buy 3 more books, they are:

no more for a while...I promise!!!

message 511: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments Oh, all three of those sound good!

message 512: by Anna (new)

Anna Anderson (annaanderson) | 130 comments Girl, you know when I hear or read about a book that sounds interesting, I just have to have it!!! I thought they sounded pretty good as well, so I just went for it!

So true! My best friend met her fiance on of all things Myspace! They always tell everyone, "who needs e-harmony, we have myspace".

Anna Anderson (annaanderson) | 130 comments Donna, I ran into a random lady at Target one day in the book section (surprise) and she said that The Wives of Henry Oades was a really good read. Just thought you might want to know since it is on your list. You have an awesome hubby, my hubby would be like, "where are you going to put ALL of those books?". Of course that does not keep me from buying, I just sneak them in, of course he does notice that the piles/stacks just keep growing and growing, but he is kind enough to look the other way!

message 517: by Anna (new)

Anna Anderson (annaanderson) | 130 comments Well, to treat myself for being sooooo sick since Thursday (with the Crohns...UGH), I just bought Green Darkness b/c I heard it was really good! One more book to add to the never ending pile/box!

I'm adding two of yours, too, Anna. I love novels set in Scotland and I love time travel, so I'm excitedly adding The Winter Sea and Mariana to my to-reads and wishlist.

message 528: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments Woah! I love time travel and Scotland!

message 529: by Anna (new)

Anna Anderson (annaanderson) | 130 comments The Winter Sea came by recomendation, so I cannot take credit for that find, but then I started checking out the author and I thought Mariana and Season of Storms sounded good too. I cannot wait for these books to arrive. I will tell you, I had a VERY hard time finding The Winter Sea, I could not find it on like 3 different book sites and then a friend told me about www.abebooks.com and it was right there just waiting for me to order it!

message 530: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 300 comments Anna wrote: "The Winter Sea came by recomendation, so I cannot take credit for that find, but then I started checking out the author and I thought Mariana and [book:Season of Storms..."

Thanks for that ordering information, Anna. I am going to have to keep a closer watch on what you're reading, as you seem to gravitate toward ones I would like, too.

message 531: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 300 comments Anna, when I checked with abebooks.com, it came up that the title, The Winter Sea, couldn't be found, but I checked with Book Depository, where I found it (and Mariana). The Winter Sea link is http://www.bookdepository.com/book/97...

message 532: by Anna (new)

Anna Anderson (annaanderson) | 130 comments huh, that is weird, let me go back and get you the exact link for abe books and I will post it for you b/c it is a good source, but I am glad you found it!

message 534: by Anna (new)

Anna Anderson (annaanderson) | 130 comments I just double checked that Kathy to make sure it worked and it pulled up The Winter Sea for me right away. I did also put in the authors name, I don't know if that matters. These links and sites can be so weird sometimes...just saying.

Anna Anderson (annaanderson) | 130 comments I stopped by B/N today for some retail therapy and purchased New York: The Novel and Juliet. They are in the line up now of TBR books.

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments Okay, so in the past few days, I've gotten:

The Tale of Murasaki: A Novel

Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual: An Illustrated Guide to Personal Practice

I think that's it. I've also gotten a few kids books, but they don't count because they're for the kids. :)~

My husband again went to the Thrift store and got me:
The Dead Lie Down
The Water's Lovely
Barefoot
Empire Falls
These Old Shades
The Ice Queen

Alos, my friend just gaves me 2 medium sized bags. I am unsure if I will keep any of them but I will have to go thru it to find out. We don't have the same tastes in books.

Those are some goodies you got there!!! I am so upset that our libraries no longer do that. Now they offer book sales thru their websites but they are not 50 cents anymore!

Donna (dfiggz) | 3119 comments Mod
I keep buying the same books!!! I was reshelving and noticed that I have 2 vopies of The Emperor's Children and I just ordered The Swan Thieves when I already have it! Oh well. I guess they will go up on Swap!!!! I am not a very good addict (or maybe I am just really an addict!)

message 543: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments I think when you start buying double copies of books it simply means you have a lot of books! LOL

message 544: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 3119 comments Mod
That's what I figured! BUT on the upside at least I can swap them or donate them. It's not like I am really buying them!

message 545: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments I plan to swap/sell/donate some books soon. I have a move coming up in about 6mon and I needed to go through my books to cut down on some weight. Holiday book diet!

message 546: by April (new)

April (cruelestmonth) | 14 comments Borders recently gave me one of those $10 in free Borders bucks things so I finally bought this book:
A Book of Tongues by Gemma Files by Gemma Files

It looks really, really strange and really awesome!

message 547: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments That's awesome about the $10 in Borders bucks April, looks like a good pick too.

message 548: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Finally got back into my audible.com account and they were having a great $4.95 book sale! I got:

I Am Legend
The Fountainhead
Great Expectations
No Country for Old Men
Oil!
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

I already owned most of these but I needed more audiobooks to listen to so I went ahead and bought them anyway, my IRL reading has slowed down signifigantly. :(

message 549: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments I cleaned out my book collection and went to the local used book store to sell some books. I of course had time on my hands while they were apraising the books and they were having a buy 3 get one free sale (yay!). so I took advantage and got:

Eleven Minutes by Paulo Coelho
Beloved by Toni Morrison
Little Bee by Chris Cleave
Queen Isabella: Treachery, Adultery, and Murder in Medieval England by Alison Weir

message 550: by Katie (new)
