Ashley, I totally understand and feel free to rant! I did the engineering gig, and I should have thought how they always specified the edition which is hilarious because in practice we actually use old texts frequently. It is not like the principles of engineering change every 5 years!

And that teacher should be praised!!!

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments So I had to run some errands and one of them was by the hippie used books store. There seems to be A LOT more William Burroughs; I am telling you the old beatnicks and hippies are taking all their old books to this store. Any way, had a great haul today:

Animal Farm by George Orwell
Harriette Wilson's Memoirs edited and introduced by Lesley Branch
A Cook's Tour: Global Adventures in Extreme Cuisines by Anthony Bourdain
The Nasty Bits: Collected Varietal Cuts, Useable Trim, Scraps, and Bones by Anthony Bourdain
Hawaii's Best Local Desserts by Jean Watanabe Hee
Best of the Best from Hawaii: Selected Recipes from Hawaii's Favorite Cookbooks by Tupper England
French Delicious Classic Cuisine Made Easy by Carole Clemments

One of the clerks was very excited I bought two Anthony Bourdain books; apparently she read a lot of them and loved them.

Woh, there will be some tasty treats in your kitchen!

Shelli Yes...do!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Ashley and Jeremy, my son Joe is doing the Engineering thing right now, and he is finding the same thing with the books. To the tune of hundreds of dollars a quarter.

Colleen, I am on live journal, too. As you might have guessed, it is lsmeadows. Send me a friend request. (I haven't been on for a LONG time, but really want to get caught up).

There are some great things about our society. The way that college students are raked through the coals for money is not one of them.

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments I think I would post more often if I knew more than three people were reading my entries (mostly recipes). Here's the link, let me know what you all think so far:

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Okay Lyn, I just added you on LJ. BTW, I am updating my swaptree today so let me know if you see anything you like and we can swap.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) OK Colleen, now you've made me hungry!

message 164: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ash88) Jeremy- that teacher is one of the best I've ever had, and I think a big reason why is because he genuinely cares about his students.

Lyn- I feel his pain! But I guess all college students do, especially in the math/physics/engineering departments I think.

I wonder if colleges have contracts with publishers? It doesn't make sense to me that only one of my teachers is letting us use an older version.

Colleen- Thanks for the link! I love new recipes :)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Oh yeah Lyn? The post I am going to do tonight is St. Patrick's day dinner. I had to fast last night for a very early doctor appointment so I am making my Irish dinner tonight: Lamb with mint jelly, real brown Irish soda bread, and imported shortbread for desert. It's all finishing up right now!

Ashley, your welcome :) when I was in high school/first in college I used to think there had to be a conspiracy between school book publishers and chiropractors. Those darn school books ripped my backpack every year; literally!

What a mouth-watering journal, Colleen! How did your St. Patrick's Day dinner turn out, sounded delicious. A couple of friends and I went out to a restaurant and had Irish beef stew fixed with Guinness and it was delicious.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) We waited our traditional corned beef dinner for this weekend while Joe is here, so I still have it to look forward to. I may try your soda bread recipe. It looks great!!

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Kathy and Lyn the St. Paddy's day din-din is posted and as a relative of mine used to say it was "shut your mouth good"! Don't mean to brag but the lamb was so good I literally said during my first mouthful "Oh my God that just ain't right!" LOL Don't mean to brag but I am mostly Irish and I was hungry! LOL

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Um, so I was very bad today. My husband (who usually doesn't "allow" me to be book buying helter skelter) is gone for 45 days for training so I went to the hippie bookstore again. I had an errand right in the area I swear! I went in with my green bag and ended up filling it and plugging gr to one of the clerks. She mentioned TTTW I told her I loved it, we talked about book clubs, one thing led to another... LOL she said she is going to check gr out now because the concept is so awesome. So here is the new additions to my shelves (need more now btw, LOL)

(splurge) Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller
Native Son by Richard Wright
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Duchess: A Novel of Sarah Churchill by Susan Holloway Scott
($1 shelf)Prism of the Night: A Biography of Anne Rice; Revised Edition by Katherine Ramsland
($1 shelf!) Transformations by Anne Sexton
The Dark Queen: A Novel by Susan Carroll
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce
Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland
Dubliners by James Joyce

Oh, and to add to the hippie store ambiance: I found out the owner employs homeless people for shelving new books, $20 under the table. How awesome is that? They beg for money or work so here's some work!

Yum, Colleen! I, also, like the vodka pineapple martini.

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Thank you, it was delish! My friend was unsure about the addition of cream but I told her to think of that drink as a pina colada without ice and now she wants to try it. I am so glad people are reading my recipes, thank you Kathy!

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments For cooking? Just off the top of my head: bookfood or cooking and booking (you could have a pic of you stirring a pot and reading a non-cookbook).

Kathy (readr4ever) | 300 comments OK, I know that this item is not a book, but I'm tying it to books in my posting. I just bought an IPhone yesterday and spent last night exploring it. Love it! There are lots of book apps for it, most just 99 cents. One I viewed was for audio books, and I listened to several previews of books, so neat. Now, even if I forget to bring a book with me when I go out, I can easily access a large selection of audio or print books on my IPhone. Life just got even better! (Oh, and not to forget, I can access goodreads on there, too.)

I have the iPhone too and you can also get the Kindle for free on it.

The only thing I have an issue with with the GR app is that you can't access your groups. I have been annoying them repeatedly to do so and have yet to prevail!

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Cripes, I think I have pretty much cleaned out that hippie bookstore because there wasn't much and two books I got just to put up on swaptree.com. There was a ton of Ginsburg, it was book buying day and I only got rid of two out of four unwanted books. Here's what I brought home:

Brave New World Revisited by Aldous Huxley
Signora Da Vinci by Robin Maxwell
A gorgeous hard back that looks like a sea stained old journal ofGulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream by Hunter S. Thompson
The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I just added Hester, also.

Colleen, Do you see something on my swaptree list that you want?

Boy - hubby better get back from training before you buy out the whole state!!

I need to take a look at doing this swapping bit.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I love swapping. It's like getting a book for a couple of bucks (the price of postage)

message 194: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments swaptree.com Kathy, let us know if you get on there.

I know Lyn, I love swaptree!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I need to take another look at your books, Colleen, but I am off to my sisters with the family today, so either tomorrow or Monday.

Is Swaptree the same? I mean, ppl only pay S&H?

message 197: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Yes Donna, it is awesome and I have been able to get rid of books I don't need and have books I want in return.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) It is wonderful!! So glad you turned me on to it, Colleen. I am amazed what I can get for some of the stuff that my Mom gives me that I would never read. Good thing people have lots of different reading tastes.

message 199: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 300 comments So, how do you accept payment for the shipping or pay it? I probably haven't gotten far enough into it to come to this answer on the goodreads bookswap, but I did take a quick look at it, and I would like to participate at least a little.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Kathy - for swaptree there are two ways to pay. I use the option where I registered a credit card when I set up my account. Then whenever they set up a trade for me, I just print out the shipping label that they provide and tape it to the package the book is in, at which time they charge the registered card. It usually costs between 2 and 3 bucks, and they tell you before you print it how much it will be.

The other option is to NOT PRINT their label, address your package yourself, and pay the postage required at the post office when you mail it.
