Kathy (readr4ever) | 300 comments Arriving in the mail from Amazon today was Beasts by Joyce Carol Oates and Daughters of the Witching Hill by Mary Sharratt.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) No prob, Colleen. Whenever you get to it. Did you get the bookmark pattern?

Tracy | 71 comments I'm back from the candy store, err, I mean the book store. I bought:
Her Mother's Daughter A Novel of Queen Mary Tudor by Julianne Lee , Nose Down, Eyes Up A Novel by Merrill Markoe , Marked (House of Night, #1) by P.C. Cast .

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Tracy - I have the Mary Tudor one on my TBR. I can't wait to see what you think of it.

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Ooooh Tracy, I have been wanting that Mary Tudor book as well, I hope you enjoy it. If you haven't figured out already when it comes to Tudor era books Lyn, Aly, Wen and I are all over that genre *giggle*

Lyn, I did! Thank you so so so much!

Just ordered The Sage and the Scarecrow from GR bookswap and am going to pick up Life As We Knew It from the library now!

message 308: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 71 comments Colleen,

This will be the first Tudor era book that I have read. I read the description and the first paragraph and it seemed interesting to me. I don't know of any other Tudor era books out there, what can you recommend for me?

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Tracy - Wow, that is like asking the pope for good books about Catholicism, lol. Colleen is the mod of a group that I am in called Tudor History Lovers here on Goodreads, so we can give you a whole list of books, probably longer than you would ever imagine. Also, you can take a look at the bookshelf for the group as there are a lot of books there, or look at my Tudor bookshelf on my profile.

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Tracy, honey, I have a whole shelf you can check out and a whole group buzzing about The Tudor Era! Oh God if I can recruit another Tudor fanatic I will be so thrilled... Do you want fiction or non-fiction? Anyone particular you enjoy; Henry VIII, one of his six wives, three legit children, ministers, parents? For fiction Victoria Holt aka. Jean Plaidy has a load of well rated Tudor era books on just about everyone involved in the treacherous court.

message 311: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 71 comments ohh.. perhaps I will join that group as well :)

I would like to focus on non-fiction, but I have an open mind and read just about anything. I don't have a favorite person, that is why I want to read about them all and learn about them all to see which ones I like the best.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Come to our group, Tracy!! We read a lot of both non-fiction and fiction, and Colleen is a great mod!

message 313: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Thanks Lyn! *blush*

Tracy, two good non-fiction books to start with areThe Autobiography of Henry VIII: With Notes by His Fool, Will Somers and Thomas Cromwell: Henry VIII's Most Notorious Minister: The Rise and Fall of a Tudor Tyrant: The Rise and Fall of Henry VIII's Most Notorious Minister. The first one is a huge fav in the group and the second was a recent group read.

I love how you call it the candy store...that is exactly how I feel and I can spend hours just browsing and then of course buying :-) I live dangerously close to a large bookstore and it is soooo hard not to go in every day. It is not that it would be bad to go in every day, it is that I would end up buying several books every time I went in and that makes it dangerous! I did two BIG book shopping sprees in April and I still have 32 books patiently waiting on me to read them, each begging to be the next book chosen.

I am looking forward to starting Her Mothers Daughter, a Novel of Queen Mary Tudor. I love Historical Fiction and Non-Fiction, especially books set in England or about English people.

message 315: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments When will you start it Anna?

message 316: by Anna (new)

Anna Anderson (annaanderson) | 130 comments Well to be honest it is on my TBR list and I want to start it soon, but I did two BIG book shopping sprees in April and I still have about 32 books patiently waiting to be read. I made myself a promise that I would not purchase another new book until I have finished at least half of the ones I still have left to read! Her Mothers Daughter will be in my next batch of "TBP" (to be purhcased)books and then I will get started.

I pre-ordered The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest and just got word that it was shipped!! Wahoo! I am so excited. I might put it up for swap after I read it simply because I don't have the other two because I got them both from the library and I can't break up the collection!

message 318: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Anna, you only have 32 books waiting to be read? I have like two bookshelves worth! LOL

message 319: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments Donna - have you started The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest? Let me know when you do if you haven't started it yet... I'm listening to the audio, but it'll probably take me a good three more weeks to finish it.

Tracy | 71 comments My husband is back and he wants to continue to eat healthy, which I am all for. So, with my 40% off coupon, I headed to the bookstore to buy Eat This, Not That! Supermarket Survival Guide. It is very eye opening about what is in the food we eat.

message 322: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments I'm 14.6% of the way through Hornet's Nest Donna! =) It's a bit slow going at the point where I am, but it all seems like relevant background information, and it feels like it's going to build up to something.

Wasn't that how the first one started??? A little slow??

message 325: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments Yeah, the first one was a little slow - but it wasn't so slow that it bothered me. Then again, I LOVE the narrator's voice, so that may have helped. The slowness of the section that I'm currently in is a bit more bothersome... mostly because I want to hurry up and find out what will happen to Lisbeth Salander! :)

message 326: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 300 comments Well, I fully intended to go to Border's yesterday and use my 40% coupon and did. I purchased Methland: The Death and Life of an American Small Town, an non-fiction book that I'd been waiting for to come out in paperback, finally did, and I, also, got the last installment of the Lily Bard series by Charlaine Harris, Shakespeare's Counselor. I am on the third book in the Lily Bard series now and want to finish them.

What I had not intended to do and did was to buy some books in T.J. Maxx yesterday, but how could I resist the prices, 9.99 compared to 15.00. I picked up Olive Kitteridge and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet for me. For my granddaughters, I got the young reader's edition of Three Cups of Tea ($5.99) and a beautifully illustrated (by Robert Ingpen) and bound copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 300 comments Donna wrote: "LOL I have all of your TJ Maxx book buys!!!"

Have you read them, Donna? I've seen mixed reviews on Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, but the subject matter really appeals to me, so I'm planning on reading it this summer. If T.J. Maxx sold groceries, I don't think I'd ever need another store. LOL!

message 330: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments Kathy,

I've read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet... while there are some errors (such as an on-line support group in 1986) in the book, it was a well told story about a dark spot in US history. I would recommend the book! :)
