I read this landmark novel several years ago, as part of the The African Trilogy, which includes two other interesting novels by Chinua Achebe and an excellent prologue by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. If you can find that collection, I really recommend it.

Probably the most similar work I've read is The River Between by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o of Kenya which I read about a year ago. I'm looking forward to reading more of it.
Thanks Wim for mentioning that it's the first in a trilogy- I may read the others also.
