Welcome Keith, to the History Book Club. We are happy that you have joined us from Salt Lake City. Thank you for your interesting introduction outlining your interests in history. We will look forward to you joining us in our discussions.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following focus areas:

American History
Europe - European History

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:

The Splendid and the Vile A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by Erik Larson by Erik Larson Erik Larson

Walter Horn Hi. I'm Walter Horn, an old philosopher (Ph.D. Brown, 1978). I'm particularly interested in constitution creation, and lately I've been reading about the French Revolution and the English Civil Wars. Previously, I read a number of books and papers on the Russian Revolution. I also have an interest in the American Progressives of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. I guess I'm generally interested in democracy and how it can be properly set up.

I'm also a longtime member of a couple of Trollope groups and have read all but two of his novels as well as several of his nonfiction works. If anybody's interested, my favorite Trollopes are probably The Bertrams, Sir Harry Hotspur of Humbthwaite, and The Eustace Diamond.

I'm mostly retired now, so I think I'll have time for some bookish confabs!

Ashley | 1 comments Hello! My name is Ashley Herbst, and I love history. I have my BA in history and political science and a BS in physics and geology. I'm now working on my PhD in astrophysics, but my first love is still history. My interests have primarily been in ancient history with anything from Sumerian to Roman history (wide swath, I know), but I've started to find more interests in American history, from the revolutionary war, civil war, etc., going all the way to WWI and WWII and how this influenced rocketry and the Space Race. This is by far my favorite group on Goodreads, and I'm excited to be a part of it.

My main interests are Victorian, history of science, history of identity, historiography/philosophy, and early modern Europe. Kate | 5 comments Good Morning Vicki,

I very much appreciate the care you and other moderators are taking to insure we have a quality group with respectful posts.

I did introduce myself and read all of the guidelines, cautions, etc, but here is my question. Will I know when the moderator makes comments or references suggestions that enrich the discussion because it shows up in my email, or do I need to go to Goodreads and click on our group and then scroll to the specific thread to see the newest posts?

Is there a step by step guide on how to stay on top of the moderator’s posts?

I worry about missing a discussion and while I get emails daily, I,too, fear I have missed starting the latest book discussion on slavery.

Thank you so much for this incredible opportunity to discuss history with other aficionados.

Kate

Hi, Kate. As far as knowing when a moderator has posted something, I'm not sure there's a way to get such a specific notice. Perhaps the group owner, Bentley, can answer that. I do hope you're enjoying it here - there's such a wide array of topics, it's always possible to find something you'll like.

Cynthia Delve | 2 comments Hello all! I am Cyd Delve and I live in Durham, NC. I graduated from Syracuse University (many moons ago) with a BS in Nursing, and I am a RN.

I have been obsessed with history ever since I can remember. I started on Little House on the Prairie (books, not TV!!) and gradually moved onto the Civil War (I used to make hoop skirts for my Barbie dolls), social history of America and Britain from Tudor through WWII, British royal history (particularly the Tudors---seriously, you couldn't make up a story like theirs), and the Holocaust.

I was blessed to live in Williamsburg, VA when I was a kid, and lived in London for 8 years where I met my husband, Paul. I have 3 dogs and miss my years of breeding Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

I am so excited to have found this group and looking forward to getting to know you all and finding some great reads!

Hello everyone,
My name is Chris and I have been an avid reader for over a year now. I moved to Colorado and reading made me feel like I had a place to go. I love history so I joined this discussion. Please add me and share your favorite books. I love thrillers, crime, fantasy, sci-fi, history, and horror books. RECOMMEND ME BOOKS!!!

Jonathan Baker Hi all -

My name is Jonathan and am happy to have found this group. I live in Savannah, GA currently and am a lifetime history buff. I am interested in many different historic periods but as a US Air Force veteran, I do have a soft spot for military history. I was a social sciences major who focused on the study of Terrorism at the turn of the 21st century and am still fascinated by varying propaganda and persuasion campaigns that have been carried out throughout history. I am looking to find new books and have insightful conversation on a multitude of topics.

New to goodreads so slowly working through updating my shelves and getting involved in reading clubs. Any suggestions on reading groups beginning soon is welcome!

Kate | 5 comments Hi Cyd,

I felt like I was reading a description of myself: RN, check; started reading Little House novels, check; love Tudor history, check, study Civil War, check, though I was never talented enough to be able to make hoop skirts, but I would pretend I was traveling out West on wagon trains and dress up in calico skirts and tops.

I live in the Denver, CO suburbs but graduated from my first nursing school in Philadelphia, yikes close to 50 years ago. So I must be a good fit for the group as I am old as dirt......

I look forward to learning from the rich diversity of opinions and insights in the club. Welcome fellow history lover.

Kate

Cyd, a warm welcome to you from all of us at the History Book Club. We are happy that you joined us from Durham.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

British Monarchy
American Civil War

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Hi Kate!! We could be related--LOL!! The hoop skirts were never very good, but not bad for a 10 year old! I traveled on wagon trains (wearing a sun bonnet I got in Harper's Ferry WV), made tee-pees, rode horses across the prairies (clip-clopping along, sometimes with a crop whip made of a stick), and day-dreamed of wearing petticoats and long skirts. I read Gone With the Wind when I was 12, Jane Eyre, Little Women, the Cherry Ames series (like Nancy Drew for aspiring nurses); anything I could find involving women from other eras. People's history was always much more interesting to me than military history. I don't particularly care who fought in Gettysburg; I want to know how they treated the wounded, what the townspeople did, how they coped with armies in their midst etc.

Glad to "meet" you! Hope you're staying well in CO!!

I’m Thulani and I live in north west England. I’ve always enjoyed history and my favourite aspect is the Tudors. I like British royal history, generally. I would like to learn more about the history of other royal families such as the French, and Irish history, specifically ancient/medieval Ireland.

Samantha | 3 comments Hi there
I'm from Sydney, Australia and looking to read more history as I didn't pursue much history during my tertiary years of study and have now become fascinated as I read more widely. I don't have any particular era of history that I am particularly expert in as I take more of the sponge approach- find something that interests me and then immerse myself in that period for a few months! I do struggle at times with the complexity and intricate details of military history prefering economic, political and social perspectives.

I'm looking forward to joining in on a discussion during this month and drawing insight into my learning from other members who are far more well read than myself.
