A warm welcome Amber, from all of us in the History Book Club. We are happy that you have joined us from New York. Thank you for your nice introduction. Please feel free to join in the many discussions.

There are many folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well so please feel free to explore our many diverse threads. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:

The Splendid and the Vile A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by Erik Larson by Erik Larson Erik Larson

Cat (edgelordcat) Hi there :)

My name is Cat (short for Catherine) and I was born in England but have lived all my life in the US. I'm 22 years old and am soon to be graduating from my university where I major in political science and minor in history. Whilst I don't have an exorbitant amount of time to be reading extra books outside of my school work, I have been gradually implementing more reading time into my schedule throughout quarantine. I am planning on challenging myself this 2021 to read more books and I think that engaging in conversation about the books that I am reading will help encourage me to reach this goal. I also think it will be fun (how lame, a 22 year old doing this for fun) to be able to apply what I l have learned as a political science major and history minor to historical facts that I know little about.
Additionally, I love to travel and after this pandemic calms down significantly and Americans are allowed to visit other countries again, I plan on doing so. Before I visit a country, I always like to have read about at least one historical event that took place there that is important to the citizens of that country. It is really incredible what you can learn about a nation's current state by its history and I think it is important to be aware of histories outside of your own. I have just returned from studying abroad in the beautiful city of Prague and plan on returning after graduation and visiting neighboring countries throughout Europe.

Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during these historic times!
xx Catherine

I’m Dona Scott from Texas and have been reading history books since high school. My areas of interest include:

American history
Russian history
Roman and Greek history
World War ll
Espionage both fiction and nonfiction
UK history
American Indian history

Love biographies also and am working my way through the Presidential biographies in chronological order. Slow slog and am only up to William Henry Harrison. I’m currently almost finished with Lakota America by Pekka Hamalainen which is a history of the Lakota people from the 1600s to present. Very interesting book and as soon as I can figure out how to post the cover, I will do so.

So happy to be here and expect my tbr to explode!

Welcome to our group, Gary! We have many different topics and books being discussed here so please feel free to explore and jump in.

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

Lacey Loves cats! | 1 comments Hi everyone, my name is Lacey, I am originally from New York but now live in rural PA. I love history, Art and cats. Though not in that order! I try to read a book a week-but only non fiction or biography. I am trying to widen my horizons so look forward to group suggestions. Incidentally am I the only one who finds navigation of this site complex? Probably (doh!)

scrungus Hello I'm 18 from Canada. I'm pretty new to history. I haven't read a full book on anything historical (other than historical fiction). I guess I joined to find recommendations. I would be interested in read a broad overview of world history, if anyone can recommend one.

Gustavo Nóbrega | 3 comments Hi everyone in the group! I've just joined a few minutes ago.

My name is Gustavo and I'm from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Like millions of Brazilians I come from a family of immigrants so therefore I also hold Portuguese citizenship!

I'm an engineer, so reading and learning about history is not something I do for professional reasons. It's simply out of a desire to gain more knowledge about our World and for personal growth.

Lately I've been interested in learning more WWI and WWII and the history of Europe during the 18,19 and 20 centuries so I have joined the group to get books suggestions from those more knowledgeable than me. Also I want to have a place where I can find others to discuss what I've learned from books that I've read or books that I'm currently reading. Besides that, the ideia that myself and others can agree on a particular book to read simultaneously and talk about it is motivating.

Ella Hi All, my name is Ella and I’m from South Australia. A year ago I finished a double major in criminology and ancient civilisations, with minor specialisations in forensic studies and medieval European history. I normally struggle with reading but I’ve found no issues with non-fiction, thus it being my favourite thing to read! I’ve joined this group for book recommendations and the potential to discuss interesting reads with a group of likeminded people.

I have a very broad range of history that I love. Some of my favourite areas include medical history, HIV/AIDS and other epidemic history, history of disasters (ancient and modern), US history/civil war/biographies, death and funeral industry, ancient history, medieval history, ancient history, war history of Britain/Ireland/Scandinavia/Vikings. I also love biographies and true crime. I’m not that interested in Australian history at the moment because that’s what I’ve learned most of my academic life previously.

Krisko Isackson (kriskodisko) | 1 comments Hey all, I'm joining from Tucson. I actually hated history until a few years back, when I read Zinn's People's History and discovered what a disservice my high school courses did to the subject. Now I'm cramming history courses in my final stretch of college to tack on a history minor. Since my history education was so poor, almost every history book I read is full of new information that blows me away. I'm really enjoying how expanding my knowledge of history helps put current events into proper context.

I'm looking forward to the discussions in here, and my girlfriend is looking forward to me having someone other than her to talk about what I'm reading. My understanding of non-American history is pretty abysmal, so I'll be using my time in this group to try to find interesting books to expand that knowledge. I'll also be on the lookout for books that I can read in conjunction with the history and anthropology courses I'm taking this semester to supplement my education.

Pandemically,
Krisko Isackson
