Ella, a warm welcome to you from all of us at the History Book Club. We are happy that you joined us from South Australia. Thank you too for your very interesting introduction - what an interesting double major.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

Ancient history
Health, Medicine, Science

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Ghost on the Throne The Death of Alexander the Great and the War for Crown and Empire by James Romm by James Romm (no photo)

Melissa | 3 comments Hi! I'm Melissa. I am from Wisconsin. I started reading history books maybe 5-6 years ago and the more I read the more I want to know! I am interested in history of all kinds, but particularly enjoy learning about the history of England and Europe in general, and also WWII, I don't know why.
I am a physician and have 4 kids, so don't have enough time to read. But I am addicted to audiobooks and listen on my way to work and any other time I can get to drive by myself :)
I am really looking forward to learning more. This seems like a great group!

Lance (sportsbookguy) Hi - I am Lance. I currently live in upstate NY and was born and raised in Minnesota. I read primarily sports books and have a blog for reviewing sports books that I have maintained for eight years. I discovered this group by accident when looking at reviews of a book I recently read. I clicked on the link and it brought me to this group. When I saw it was a history group with a sports section, I knew that it was for me.

I work as the Privacy Officer at a large health care system and my wife (retired for several years now) and I are both avid readers.

Denise (drbetteridge) Hi Everyone! My name is Denise. I'm a Compliance Manager living in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. I've been an active Goodreads member since it started, then had a major life change and got sucked into Facebook and the digital lobotomy that goes with it. It has gotten too nasty for even me, so it's been relegated to the trash heap, and I am back to regain use of my little grey cells. I majored in Political Science and History, and I make a conscious effort to be globally aware of what's going on in the world, but I'm fascinated by the Partition of India (and Harry Potter, to lighten things up). Glad to be here.

Dariusz | 1 comments Hi everyone, I am Dariusz. I'm a software engineer in Seattle, and I love to read. I enjoy most genres so long as the writing style isn't too dense or convoluted (eg thomas pynchon). I've been on goodreads for a while, but have never been part of a group.

New to the book club but not new to reading nonfiction history books. I read one about every month. I have bought the suggestion for February's 2021 discussion titled "Caste". I have just started to read it and find it excellent. I look forward to hearing what the rest of you think. Question: Do you ever do discussion groups using Zoom or some other app? It would be fun to be part of a live discussion.

Barbara | 1 comments Hello everyone,

My name is Barbara and I am a teacher from the Netherlands (primary school; ages 4-12, currently I teach what would be 3rd grade in the US). I like to read, but last year I forgot to make time for reading due to the covid-situation. This year I plan on picking it up again.

I enjoy reading all kinds of non-fiction, but I am particularly interested in history and true-crime. I have a very broad spectrum of interest and what I am focusing on varies from time to time. From the history of the European monarchies and revolutions, the wars of the 20th century, but also events and everyday life in the 1800's and early 1900s. But also more ancient history at times.

In school I have always been fascinated by the period (what was then still called the middle ages or dark ages) between 500-1500 AC in Europe. But strangely I have never found non-fiction books that captured my attention about that periode.

message 627: by Michael (last edited Feb 02, 2021 04:37AM) (new)

Michael (michaelk19thcfan) | 2 comments Good Day. Let me introduce my self. My name is Michael. I am from the United States and am 52 years old. I was raised in a suburb of New York City. I currently live in Virginia. One of the most blessed things about living in Virginia is all the historical places among them Colonial Williamsburg, Monticello, Mount Vernon, and sites associated with the American Civil War.

For some reason as a boy I loved history and dinosaurs. Thankfully I never grew out of it. Perhaps at a young age I wanted to know how people lived in the past, and how we got to where we are now. Also knowledge is power and I must admit I get a good chuckle when today's politicians and like try to play on the ignorant or think the age we live is Year Zero.

As Edmund Burke put it “Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors."

Another passion I picked up was the Victorians and their wonderful novels. So 19th century history is a particular period I am very interested in. I think in this age we live in of serious socioeconomic disruption and inequality we can learn from that era.

Overall, I have a broad interest in history across time and space. One of my favorite trips was going to Guatemala where I was able to walk around Mayan cities and the splendor of Spanish Colonial Baroque. More recently I was in Israel and Palestine to view with my own eyes 10,000 years of the human story.

I get great enjoyment listening to history podcasts, including Hardcore History, Michael Duncan's podcasts about the Romans and various revolutions, the Age of Victoria podcast, and Fall of Civilizations. I also take advantage of the great content on YouTube including Kings and Generals, and the various channels produced by Time Ghost History.

One of my favorite current historical authors in Tom Holland.

I am relatively new to Goodreads. So I just discovered this group and am happy to join and meet new friends.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following focus areas:

Ancient History
Roman Empire - The History

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:

The Bully Pulpit Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism by Doris Kearns Goodwin by Doris Kearns Goodwin Doris Kearns Goodwin

Gunnar Palsson | 1 comments Hello group.

My name is Gunnar and I live in Reykjavik, Iceland. I come from a family of avid readers, and its really engrained in the culture in Iceland to read and seek knowledge through books. I try to diversify my reading as much as I can, but I always find myself going towards non-fiction books about history, politics and true crime. So I´m very much looking forward to seeing what others in this group are reading, the suggestions, and finding inspiration for new and exciting titles.

All the best and happy reading,
Gunnar

Ken (fiddleman) | 2 comments Hello, all!

My name is Ken.

I’ve been interested in history since I took a history class in High School with a teacher who survived the Auschwitz death camp. My mother also had some interesting historical observations, specifically that Dwight Eisenhauer, former General and US President, warned against the power of the “military-industrial complex”. She also had an interesting encounter in the mid 1960’s with a Senator in Washington D.C. She was part of a White House tour, and asked a Senator she encountered: “Senator, why are we really in Vietnam?” His reply was “Young lady, it was asking such questions that got John Kennedy killed.”

I’m primarily interested in American history, though I’ve also listened to a number of courses from “The Great Courses” series on British and European history, mostly covering the period from the Romans up to the Tudors of England. I’ve also read “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”, by William Shirer and other books regarding the Holocaust.

Among books I’ve read on American History, I’ve read multiple books by Eric Foner, the first 3 Robert Caro books on LBJ, multiple biographies of Lincoln and Grant, as well as Ron Chernow’s Alexander Hamilton bio. Some of my favorites are “After Appomattox: How the South Won the War” by Stetson Kennedy, “How the South Won the Civil War” by Heather Cox RIchardson, “The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution” by Eric Foner, and “The Making of the Constitution” by Charles Warren.

I’ve had a couple of different careers during my lifetime. I attended the music conservatory Manhattan School of Music in New York intending to pursue a career as a violinist, though I ultimately decided against it. I studied math and computer science and worked as a computer programmer for about 10 years. I left that field to teach, first as a public-school music teacher, then as a math teacher, also in the public schools, which is what I still do now.

I’ve been married for 35 years to a wonderful woman, and have a 26-year-old daughter who is working as a research scientist, studying immunology and drug design.

I’m really looking forward to discussing those issues most important to our group members!
