Welcome Lydalyn, we are happy that you have joined us in the History Book Club from Ohio. Thank you for your interesting introduction and outlining your varied interests in history.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following focus areas:

American History
American Government
Ancient History

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:

The Federalist Papers by Alexander Hamilton by Alexander Hamilton Alexander Hamilton

Shifra ♕ (shifra98) | 1 comments Howdy,

I credit my fascination with history, international relations and politics to my 'rolling stone' upbringing, having lived in three countries (USA, Mexico and Israel) and being multicultural. I am studying International Relations with Environmental Studies. I am joining this group in hopes of keeping myself honest to the task of expanding my mind with the pertinent subjects, see, as of late, my interest in history has alarmingly manifested into devouring guilty pleasure regency period fiction- I beg your indulgence, I am but a starry eyed youth- however I endeavor to set this to rights. I hope joining you fine fellows here shall prove the first step- well the second step. The first was admitting I have a 'Regency Novel' problem.

How very brave of me.

Four of my favorite books in this area are
Lincoln by David Herbert Donald Catch the Jew! by Tuvia Tenenbom Toxic Sludge Is Good for You Lies, Damn Lies and the Public Relations Industry by John Stauber Guns, Germs, and Steel The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond
Yours in anticipation,
Shifra

Theresa (treeberg75) | 1 comments Hello!
My name is Theresa and I work as an archivist for the state of California. I am so fortunate to have found a career that supports and encourages my love for history. Much of my academic background as well as my personal interests lie in American history (20th century), California history, and general American cultural history. Right now I am especially interested in the cultural and biographical histories of the paranormal (ghosts, witches, horror, etc). Another favorite topic is post-World War II American history and domestic history of the Cold War (i.e., works by Elaine Tyler May, Lizabeth Cohen, and others).

My name is Kristin and I live in Arizona (USA). I am a SAHM. I enjoy multi-generational historical fiction (and epic fantasy), but have been dipping into non-fiction here and there. I found this group while looking for ways to broaden my reading of places and events both here and abroad. I like books that really detail the cultural aspects of a particular time or place, but also how they change over time. Thank you!

Garrett Ryan | 2 comments Hello all-

My name is Garrett, and I live in Chicago. By training, I'm an ancient historian. I did my PhD in Greek and Roman History at the University of Michigan, and taught in the History and Classics Departments of a few universities before leaving academia.

As you might expect from my background, there's a special place in my heart for classical history (nonfiction and very occasional fiction). But I've always been fascinated by American history, and have a particular weakness for magisterial biographies.

I have a bad habit of letting books pile up on my bedside table. As I work through the latest long-neglected stack, however, I look forward to sharing my opinions with an audience of fellow history buffs. Thanks for welcoming me aboard!

Viktor (disobedienttt) | 1 comments Hey everybody!
My name's Viktor, and I live in a small town in Germany. I still go to what, I guess, is the German equivalent to high school and I intend to become an archivist (that is if I get accepted at the only archivist's school in the entire country). I've been interested in history ever since I was a child.

My favorite "era" ranges from 1800 to 1950, and I am quite fond of the medieval ages as well. I am mostly interested in the ways of life back then, what people did everyday and what they wore, I also find changes in culture really intriguing. I've read a bunch of books about the Victorian era (for example one by Ruth Goodman) and since I also love looking at photographs from this period of time, one of my most beloved possessions is a book with photos by Lewis W. Hine.

Robert Lofthouse | 1 comments Hi everyone! My name is Robert Lofthouse, and I now live in Kansas City, Kansas after traveling extensively and living on the US east coast.

I first became interested in history as a child, and have attempted to keep pace with it ever since.

I have no favorite "era" as my curiosity ranges from biblical, through medieval and colonial days to the twenty-first century.

I am intrigued by the evolution of mankind from its' roots to modern cultures, as well as the fascinating development of language. Most English language words and phrases have their roots in the Mediterranean cultures. But I'm sure that Greek and Latin form foundational constructs of many other languages as well.

I am a professional IT guy and an amatuer genealogist. While tracing my ancestors back to Plymouth Bay Colony here in pre-colonial America, I've learned that everyone has a story and each family line runs back through a vast array of story-lines that are intertwined with the major events in history, including military engagements.

It's fascinating to me that the human race has documented itself and learned from its successes and failures long before the modern age. In a quote from "The 5000 Year Leap", we have not followed the admonition of our Founding Fathers to refresh ourselves at the well-spring of our origin, and thus, we may perish.

Not wanting to perish any time soon, I will continue to read and enjoy my God-given life!

Looking forward to getting to know some of you during my journey, and enjoying this book club.

Marilyn Geary (likelife) | 1 comments Hello!

My name is Marilyn L. Geary. I'm a native Californian and grew up in Santa Clara Valley. Once known as the Valley of Heart's Delight, the name Santa Clara Valley is now nearly forgotten, replaced by Silicon Valley. Seeing the rich, fertile orchards destroyed and paved over with suburbs and freeways has made me very aware of historic changes in my place of birth.

I have always been interested in history and graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in English/history.

My heritage has also made me very aware of how immigration has shaped our country. My Czech grandparents never forgot their Bohemian origins while my Italian grandparents brought the traditions of Liguria and Emilia with them to tend their fruit orchards in San Jose.

I look forward to learning more from this group and contributing where I can.

Paula Constant (paulaconstant) | 2 comments Hi there,
I'm Australian, from Broome, in the far north west. I am a little obsessed with history, particularly of the Peninsular wars. I lived in Granada, Spain, for several years and got lost in the battlegrounds and routes marched during that period.
I'm also crazy about the period of Arabic conquest in the late 7th-early 8th centuries, both in northern Africa and in Spain. The rise of Arabic Al Andalus intrigues me.
To be fair, there isn't a period of history that doesn't fascinate me. I lose myself in it. My favourite non-fiction work remains Froude's Spanish Story of the Armada and other essays - I love the work of James Anthony Froude.

And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:

The Splendid and the Vile A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by Erik Larson by Erik Larson Erik Larson

Jamie | 2 comments Thanks so much for this group. I hope to learn more about history.

I am interested in the group that discusses the Roman empire as well as religion (especially 100 to 200 AD). To me, all history is important to know and understand.

I'm not sure how to get started in the groups.

Jamie, I'm very glad to see you're interested in Roman history; it's my favorite period also. We're not currently reading any books about the Roman empire, but you can check out the various topics in the Roman Empire link that Lorna pointed you to. If you've read any of the books discussed there, feel free to add your thoughts to the threads devoted to that book. For instance, SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome was read here a couple of years ago, and you could post in this week 1 thread -
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I hope you have a lot of fun here - there's a lot to check out.

Steve Mobbs (mobbsy) | 1 comments hello everyone

My name's Steve and I live in England, not far from Hadrian's Wall. I have grown increasingly fascinated with history as I get older, maybe as I live in a village with an 800 year old church I couldn't fail to be reminded of the past every time I leave the house!
My favourite subjects are the Second World War, British History from the Norman conquest (Especially Henry VIII and the Reformation), European History and Naval History. But those subjects aren't exclusive. I'm open to anything.
I read a book a week on average, and I try to not make them all about WW2. But it's hard, so hard....

Angela Beard | 6 comments Greetings to all, my name is Angela and I am joining this group from Seattle, Washington in the U.S. - way far up in the Northwest corner. :) I have loved history since I was a child and my mother got me hooked on Jean Plaidy - yikes, so long ago. I love English and European history, in particular the medieval and Renaissance periods, all U.S. history, and I'm branching out a little more after having read The Silk Roads: A New History of the World and looking forward to the release of Edward Rutherfurds "China". I'm glad to see you allow historical fiction, yay!

My interest in history is pretty broad, both in terms of time period and region, although my area of greatest knowledge is probably ancient and Roman history, or specific periods and events within that history at least.
