Yadira, a warm welcome to you from all of us at the History Book Club. We are happy that you joined us from Mexico.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

Ancient history
Art, Architecture, Culture
Medieval History

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Ghost on the Throne The Death of Alexander the Great and the War for Crown and Empire by James Romm by James Romm (no photo)

Benjamin Toma (benjamintoma) | 1 comments Hello, I'm Benjamin from the UK (just outside London), although much of my life has been spent in other countries. I'm a lover of ancient and modern European history in particular, although I'm always looking to expand the range of my historical knowledge. My interest in history also has a philosophical bent; it's fascinating to reflect on whether historical actors were ever truly free in their actions, or whether they were simply the vessels of the various social and political forces of their time. Thank you for your welcome. I look forward to engaging with this community.

Atulya Kriday (atulyakriday) | 1 comments Hello everyone, I'm Atulya from a tiny city in the southern part of India. In addition to history, I'm also obsessed in learning new languages. As of now, I've decided to learn Latin, Sanskrit, and Traditional Chinese. I started teaching myself Latin since the last week! I do know a bit of Sanskrit; I can only read and write, I have yet to speak fluently and understand the language completely. So, perfecting Sanskrit and beginning Traditional Chinese will follow someday(most probably a few years later). Baby Steps!

Coming back to the main point, my interest in history is not limited to a certain era and time. However, I'm currently diving into Classical Antiquity and Imperial China (from Qin to Han dynasty). I'm looking forward to learn from this huge and diverse community.

Ken Brandt (kenbrandt) | 3 comments Hi, my name is Ken Brandt and I have always loved history. I wish more of it were taught in schools. Most of the history I know I learned by reading, watching documentaries, and watching the history channel, plus a fair amount on Wikipedia. I am excited about joining this group.
I like history of all time periods, especially American, Australian, and World history. I enjoy it that biographies and autobiographies provide a lot of history too. I especially enjoy histories that include a clear description (and maps) of the geography, as well as the era’s social, economic, political, and military history.
The two most recent history book that I have read are “Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World” by Jack Weatherford and “Inglorious Empire: What the British Did to India” by Shashi Tharoor. Both books were great. I gave them each five stars. Here are my reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
and https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I have led a fun and adventurous life and had a successful business career despite (or perhaps in part because of!) my bad eyes. I have always had poor vision and slightly crossed eyes, had six eye operations (including a detached retina and cataract operation in each eye), and spent parts of my life legally blind.
Prior to retiring, I held senior management and management consulting positions in information technology and information security with firms and clients of all sizes in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. I have been told that I am an entertaining speaker. I am also an amateur New Orleans style jazz trumpeter. My wife and I have been married for over twenty years, lived most of our lives in New York City, and now live in Melbourne, Australia.

WW2, Iraq, Afghanistan, the US and South Africa seem to cover enough historical territory to keep the book supply endless. I'm always interested in unusual perspectives and in many ways was fortunate to be able to document post-invasion Baghdad through the lens of trying to rescue abandoned animals at the zoo and palaces. I've just finished 1776 and The German Aces Speak.

I'm Jay Clise from Albuquerque, NM, USA. I recently retired from Sandia National Labs, which has left more time for reading. I worked in Accounting and Business IT. My current project is The Oxford University History of the United States and I'm reading Battle Cry of Freedom, The Civil War Era, 1848 - 1865, by James McPherson. I've love history for the stories it tells and the insights it provides, especially United States History. Perhaps there will be a time when I go back to school for an advanced degree i the subject. For now, I'm looking forward to learning more about this book club and participating in discussions.

Emma | 11 comments Hello everyone.

My name is Emma, a newly-minted history nerd from the United States. Although I've long been a fan of history and historical fiction, I'm only recently really actively trying to read more historical nonfiction.

I've found stories that interest me in all times and places in history, but I'm especially fascinated by 20th-century history, especially the World Wars and the various Rights Movements.

I think what I like about history is the narrative aspect, how all the pieces fit together, and how the more you study history, the more predictable it becomes.

I'm excited to geek out with all my fellow history nerds. Thanks for having me!

Owen Symes | 1 comments My name is Owen (he/him). I'm a historian from the US, currently living in the Midwest. My primary interest is Medieval (Byzantine) and Enlightenment-era Europe, although more recently I've forced myself to read more US history in order to better understand my own country's current predicament.

I try to read philosophy and economics as well as history, with fiction when I have time. I'm also a film nerd, target shoot when I can find ammo, and sketch from time to time.

The historians that have most influenced me are: Thucydides, Polybius, Montesquieu, Gibbon, Du Bois, RG Collingwood, Michel Foucault, and Will Durant.

Kurt Tietjen | 1 comments New member here --> I worked at Random House for about 7 years and got a steady flow of new books. Over many years I've read a few dozen books that my ex-wife always called textbooks about American history. Over the last 3 or 4 years, I've been devouring a steady flow of pretty fun books on European medieval historic fiction. I happened upon this group looking for ideas for a new subject as I feel like I'm reading the same book/story over and over.

Looking forward to getting some great ideas here.

My favorite historical figure is a Theodore Roosevelt. While he doesn’t rank as one of the greatest Presidents in our history, he may very well rank as the greatest American of all time.

Im currently reading book 1 of the Edmund Morris Trilogy on Roosevelt. The first book is called The Rise of Theodor Roosevelt.

Bec (bectasticbooks) | 1 comments Hi All,

I'm Bec from Australia and I'm currently finishing my last year of high school. I grew up as an expat and spent some time living in Texas which sparked my interest for American history and politics. My favorite period of history would be WWII and I am especially fascinated with the political aspects of the time period as well. Additionally, my other interests include psychology and philosophy. My favorite books over the past few months have been How Democracies Die and Think Again (Adam Grant). Currently I'm reading Talking to Strangers and I plan on reading The Splendid and the Vile soon but any other recommendations would be appreciated. I have a goal to read about a book a week so I decided to join this group to see some cool book recommendations and discussions.

Have a nice day!

Mukul Sheopory | 1 comments Hi folks,
I never knew I was interested in history until I chanced upon a biography of Alexander the Great. The way Alexander adapted to the situation on the ground and leveraged anything that could be leveraged, and won every battle that he could have just as easily lost prompted a decade long quest to find business parallels from his life. Eventually I was able to compare his exploits to those of business icons like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, the Golden State Warriors, George Soros, etc.

Excited to be on this forum where I can connect with like minded lovers of history! And looking forward to discussions on leadership lessons, military strategies, and how they apply to our lives today. Would love to get everyones thoughts on how other battles and historical lessons could illuminate us.
Cheers,
Mukul
