Welcome to the group, Mukul -- we are glad you found us. We have discussions on all aspects of history so please feel free to join in.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

Ancient history
Military history

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

The First Man in Rome (Masters of Rome, #1) by Colleen McCullough by Colleen McCullough Colleen McCullough

Dan Hello everyone! My name is Dan Demers, and I am from Bethlehem, CT. A small town in the Litchfield hills of Northwest CT. I am 37 years old, and have always been a big fan of history through school. I went to college at SUNY Cobleskill and graduated with an AAS in Nursery Management and BT of Horticulture. I am now a manager at a wholesale nursery in CT. I am happily married to another reader (not history though), and we have our first child on the way. We are expecting a girl October 22nd.

After college, I took a hiatus from reading for a few years, but then returned. I read pretty much anything, but I have always loved history, especially American history. The time span I read about most is revolutionary war through world war 2. Most of my history reading has been in the civil war time period.

I'm joining this group to expand my horizons when it comes to the time period I already have read about, and learn more about, and read about, more world history. I look forward to meeting some new people. I have already read all the introductory materials written out and this seems like a good group to join.

Thank you.

Yuval Kanev (ykanev) | 1 comments Hi.
My name is Yuval and I live in Haifa, a beautiful city, which is quite important at the time of the Coronavirus. You can always enjoy walking up to mount Carmel or down to the seashore.

I like to read history, - fiction, nonfiction, whatever catches my eyes.

There was a time when I have chosen a book called "Historians' Fallacies" by David Hackett Fischer.

Another time I concentrated on nonfictions dealing with WW2, and it was quite refreshing to notice some of the "fallacies" listed by Fischer.

But all in all, to my taste, there is nothing like the experience of reading a touching historical fiction, be it Oliver Twist, The King Must Die, or In Human Bondage.

I live in France now and am interested in the second world war and have researched about the German occupation of my local town. We know so little about it and discovering some of the privations that were inflicted it has given me a new appreciation of the French and their history.

Matthew | 2 comments Hi! I’m Matthew, I am an ER/diving doc and lifelong bookworm. I am 45, blessed with a genius/stunning ER doc wife, two crazy school age boys, three dogs, two in-laws, and a very large home office/library. I read on my kindle app a lot lately and have used audible to finish books on time while commuting 90 minutes to one of my jobs.

My absolute favorite non-fiction historical book is Juliet Barker’s “Agincourt.” Reads like a novel, gripping, even though I know exactly what happens in the end. She is gifted.

Quantum leap to one of my least favorites, “A Distant Mirror.” I read it out of sheer determination, and at the beginning of COVID it was interesting to see similar human behavioral patterns.

The second best non- fiction that I have read is “Flu” by Gina Kolkata, about the 1918 pandemic. It is eerie how similar the human dynamics are between the plague, the Spanish flu, and COVID. She even writes a chapter on SARS 2003 at the end. It’s got history, archaeology (digging up corpses in the permafrost looking for viral samples), and lots of really well written and researched material. Two big thumbs up.

Which brings me to my question: any recommendations besides Tuchman on the first Black Death Circa 1346? I can’t force myself to re-read that doorstop. :)

Thanks in advance and thanks for having me!
Matthew

Abbas K (_albo4) Hi all,

My name is Dakota: I'm from the U.S, but I've lived and worked abroad since 2016. I'm an avid reader and joined this club to meet others, read different perspectives regarding the past and current events, and to also help guide my future text selection.

In general I focus mostly on 20th century history, and I really appreciate historians that find a healthy balance between fact, philosophy and style.

To be more specific, I am very interested in the fallout of World War I, the cultural and ideological developments of the Eurasian interwar period, and post-World War II counterculture. There are numerous historians I enjoy, but some of my favorite are Westad, Applebaum, Zinn and Hedges. (I'm actually in the midst of rereading their texts now.)

With that being stated, I hope during my time here I am able to start branching out and exploring more historical periods.

Thanks for having me,
D.

Mike (guycicero) | 2 comments Greetings, my name is Mike and I'm from the USA. I have loved reading history since I inhaled every volume in the Landmark series from Random House when I was a grade school kid in the 1950s. My BA was in political science, but I took English, Russian, Chinese, and American history courses. My interest in military history was helped along when I served as archivist and museum curator for the oldest unit in the US Army, the 3d US Infantry (The Old Guard).
Today, I especially enjoy histories of the World Wars period (1912-1945), largely due to reading Churchill's The Gathering Storm, which makes the case for the avoidability of WWII, and by extension all major wars.
I also love literary historical fiction, and especially the Aubrey-Maturin books of Patrick O'Brian, War and Peace, etc.
Thanks to the Moderators for encouraging this sharing.

A warm welcome, Mike. We are happy that you have joined us in the History Book Club from the USA. Thank you for your interesting introduction to your backgroud and outlining your varied interests in history.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following focus areas:

The First World War
The Second World War
Military History

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mentioned should look:

The Gathering Storm (Second World War) by Winston S. Churchill by Winston S. Churchill Winston S. Churchill
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy by Leo Tolstoy Leo Tolstoy

Before that, I had lived in Japan after graduating from the University of Montana. I have a particular interest in Japanese history, but enjoy learning in general.

Danae Penn | 4 comments My name is Danae which is a Greek name although I am English. I live in France but I have also lived in Belgium, Luxembourg, Argentina and Switzerland. I became interested in Tudor history when I was at school but my career was in languages. Now I live on the pilgrimage track to Santiago de Compostela and I have walked there twice. This experience rekindled my interest in history, especially in the fifteenth century when there were many pilgrims. I became fascinated by medieval life generally and already have many books about that.
