Welcome back to the group, Nancy -- we are glad you found us. We have discussions on all aspects of history so please feel free to join in.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

Vietnam War
WW II
Supreme Court

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius by Suetonius Suetonius

Hi William, thank you for your response. While I usually send a PM outlining how you have violated our rules and policies and how to improve your introduction, your Goodreads home page prevents messages from being sent. But yes, any references to you being an author or your books are in direct violation of our policies prohibiting any mention of authorship. Please let me know if you have further questions.

Hello everyone,
My name is Kara. I was born, raised, and still live in Colorado in the United States. My grandmother loved history and I learned to love both history and books by enjoying her collection. I have an undergraduate degree in history and I'm working on a masters in library science now.
In joining this group, I'm hoping to get a broad range of book recommendations and get some opinions on other books I have read.

Yves | 2 comments Hi all, I'm Yves and I work in the commercial real estate industry in Canada.

I joined the group to find book recommendations and also to find others to discuss and learn history with.

I think I've been interested in history for a while now, but only recently started to dedicate serious time to learning history. I just finished a book that covered the Middle Ages and a bit of the Reformation and the Age of Exploration, so currently I'm trying to focus my reading/learning between the Middle Ages and the Age of Revolutions in the 1800s.

After that, I'd like to focus more on the Greco-Roman world in classical and late antiquity, as well as East Asia with a focus on China's history.

Cheers,

I got into reading books on history about 4-5 years ago. Currently my main interests are books on the history of countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region - from Turkey to North Eastern Africa as well as books on Indian history.
I’m presently reading Jerusalem by Simon Sebag Montefiore as well as A Taste of Time by Mohona Kanjilal ( a book on the Food History of Calcutta, India).

Mick Randell | 1 comments Hi all,
I owe my lifetime love of History (with a capital H) to my grandfather, even though he died (in 1950) when I was less than a year old.
During the 1920s and 1930s he collected serialised versions of 3 major works - "The Science of Life" by HG Wells, Aldous Huxley and GP Wells, an Astronomy work I can't remember very well, and "The History of Nations". As a schoolboy aged 6 or 7, I found these magazine-sized treasures stashed in a cupboard in the room I shared with my younger brother, and loved them all immediately, especially the History ones, even though they weren't very suitable for a young child, being filled with apocalyptic horsemen stuff - violence and cruelty on a grand scale, natural and man-made disasters, flood, famine and pestilence.
But then in 1960 my brother caught infectious hepatitis and we were both quarantined in that room for 6 weeks, followed by (horror of horrors) everything in it being burnt - including my grandfather's legacy. I still grieve, 60 years later...
All History is good, but some is better - Ancient (Greece, Rome, Egypt, Mesopotamia) and Mediaeval (Byzantine, Crusades, Vikings, Renaissance).
regards
Mick

I have had a passion for history since I was a child. I work in sales and volunteer in my spare time for my local historical society.

Joe B. | 2 comments Hi, my name’s Joe and I’m joining you from Germany though I was born in the US. I’ve been fascinated by history forever, but especially since a freshman history class in Ancient Greece and the Near East for which I had a highly motivational professor. I ended up minoring in both ancient and medieval history, but I read books about history from all epochs.

I’m currently up to The Reformation in the Durant History of Civilization, have read half of Churchill’s WWII series, and recently read The Silk Roads, The Crisis of Islam, Big Chief Elizabeth and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee in the last few years.

I am currently reading The Satyricon… well, maybe that’s not history so much as an ancient near-novel, but it reveals a lot about life in Ancient Rome as a source text. Next up are The Analects and The Conquest of Gaul.

I’m also very slowly reading Mommsen in German… but that’s a very long term project…

I look forward to joining the group discussion!

Reading history for me is like having a time machine that I can get in anytime and go anywhere. Anyway... Saludos desde Mexico.

Thomas, perfect except remember to put in "by" between the bookcover and the author's photo and you are set. Thank you.

Haley (haley_needs_sleep) | 1 comments Hi! I’m Haley and I’m from Alabama. History is one of my majors and I thought I might be able to find some good book recs on here. My current interest is in pirates and rebels (especially women) in about the mid-1600s through 1700s, although I’d love to read books on other topics as well.

Robin Morris (robinmorris) Hello,
The first pirate book that comes to mind is "Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates" by Brian Kilmeade. This was the first use of US Marines for and international issue, i.e. the Marine song "...to the shores of Tripoli..." Good book, easy read.

Robin

Welcome to the group, Haley -- we are glad you found us. We have discussions on all aspects of history so please feel free to join in.

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what we have to offer.

Joe B. | 2 comments Hi Lorna,
Thanks for the welcome and the tips, but I don’t see your examples in your comments and I don’t have the linking options you mentioned on the iPad. Maybe if I update the app, or just use the browser version… I’ll try and get back to you later.

Yes Joe, in order to see my complete post you will need to access Goodreads through your browser. Unfortunately the apps on smart phones and I-pads do not show all of the data. Please let me know if you have further difficulties.

Thank you.

Chris Moore Hello,
Thanks for allowing me to join your group, I’m honored.
I have always enjoyed reading books, but as I grow older (now 57) I have taken it to a new level, reading two at a time, one at home, another while driving. My wife thinks I'm nuts.
History has always been one of my favorite things to read, watch, hear etc.. And much of what I read currently is historical fiction.
I am from southwest lower Michigan, U.S. and still reside there today. I was a soldier stationed in the former West Germany and also south Georgia (U.S.) what feels like a lifetime ago.

message 849: by Travis (new)

Travis Sundwall I am from the United States.

While I seem to have a preference for political, legal and economic histories, my interests extend to most areas of non fiction, with the following exceptions:

-Biographies, unless they are the most informative source for a related topic. For example, I would avoid books about Napoleon in particular, with a preference for books placing the Napoleonic wars in a global context. However, I recently added a biography of Park Chung Hee to my ‘want to read shelf’, as it seems to be the most highly regarded work outlining South Korea’s industrialization policies and the deliberations involved in their creation.

- Historical accounts of specific battles or military campaigns.

- Historical novels.

My favorite authors of historical books include Eric Hobsbawm and Adam Tooze.
