Welcome to the group, Nelly -- we are glad you found us. We have discussions on all aspects of history so please feel free to join in.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

American Revolution
American Civil War
WW 1
WW 2

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius by Suetonius Suetonius

Helen Williams | 3 comments Hi I’m Helen and I live in the beautiful Isle of Skye in Scotland. I studied Modern and Medieval Languages at Cambridge University and studied a lot of 17th, 19th and 20th century French literature as well as some comparative arts and the history of those periods. Despite this, I wasn’t really into history or historical fiction. However, I am now keen to rekindle my curiosity and have become particularly interested in 19th century history, most notably the Napoleonic era, and am now keen to learn more.

Nomi | 1 comments Hi, I'm Nomi

I'm a student in Belgium. I'm currently in my first year of university, studying history and English. My goal is to become a teacher in these two studies and inspire my future pupils. We are presently learning about the ancient world in history class. I find history fascinating, my favourite area is the 20th century. I love reading books in the candlelight while drinking a nice cup of tea. I'm excited to share ideas, book recommendations and gain new perspectives. I'm hoping to broader my knowledge on all kinds of history topics so I can share it with my future pupils.

Jordan (jobran) | 1 comments Hello everyone!

I'm Jordan. I did my undergrad in history and political science, and I really enjoy reading about interesting histories in my free time. I have an interest in all history, really, but as an American I've chosen to focus a lot of my time (both in and out of uni) on American history, mostly focused on the period from about 1700 - 1876 or so.

I just think history is fascinating in general, and an extremely important topic of study, so I joined this group to find likeminded individuals and to find some great books to read!

Howard P (howard_pavane) | 23 comments Hi Jordan,
Another history buff here. I’m also into science. My name is Howard P. I’m a little older than you, I’m 72 and disabled since 1999. Had Polio at 4, 6 months before the vaccine. Also 14 life-threatening conditions including Guillain Barre Syndrome, perforated intestines, sepsis. So I had to leave my job as a project engineer in building automation and had the best 12 years of my life volunteering for Make A Wish Foundation! I studied engineering and a masters in physics. I love non-fiction. If I’m going to read I might as well learn.

Amber K Hi there, I'm Amber and I live in the US. I studied history in college with the intention of becoming a teacher then life got in the way. Most of my education was in Western European and American history. I consider myself more of a social historian. I enjoy learning how societies have evolved through time. I'm not a big military historian but I understand that military conflicts and social changes tend to go together.

I'm interested in learning more about other geographic areas of our world.

William Sonn | 2 comments I'm William Sonn, a long-ago Chicago transplant who moved to Denver for grad school, got out of the truck, inhaled, and thought: so THIS is what life is like without humidity. I've stayed. I find myself reading history often at the expense of missing great books (fiction, too). It's usually American history, although there've been many exceptions. I tend to fall in love with a given period (lately, the 1930s), but will grab the next interesting book I see, regardless of era.

Alisa (monalisa25) | 1 comments Hi my name is Alisa! I am from Southern Illinois in the US. I love to read and I do have to say that I have a passion for history and autobiographies of all kind. History is my passion and I feel like there is always something new to learn from it. Lately I have been reading so many books about Holocaust survivors. Being able to look into the lives of those before us and to see different aspects amazes me. Being able to piece together the day by day aspects of life is a step to better understanding the past. I may never understand why things happened or why someone thought or did the things they did, but by reading about it I get little pieces of their puzzle.
Hollywood actresses are another love of mine so I tend to read about their lives through biographies and autobiographies. This just helps us to all realize that they struggled just like the rest of us and make them more human in our eyes.
Gender and Sexuality is another area I like to dabble in. Reading through the lives of those that feel they do not belong in their own skin helps me to become a more open minded individual.
This is just a like bit about my reading habits. I hope to be able to find people in this group who share some of my passions and that I can get some active discussions out of it. Nice to meet you all!

Jorge Quinta-Nova | 1 comments Hello and Olá
I'm Jorge Quinta-Nova, a 47 y.o. from Portugal. I absolutely love history books, with a special interest in military history from Portugal and Brasil at the end of the Ancien Regime (Revolutionary & Napoleonic times). I'm also interested in everything else, with a soft spot for the Portuguese Empire (its good and bad), as well as ancient Rome, altough I consume books about many periods and countries.
Recently, I've developed an interest in the Outlander series, by Diana Gabaldon, which was something quite different for me, but it's all a pleasant journey.
Hope I can learn and get some nice recommendations.

My name is Ted Aldrich and I am brand new to Goodreads. I have been a fan of history since 1968 when I walked into my second grade classroom and saw portraits of the presidents on the wall. I have read little else since and acquired a library of about 600 books read while commuting from my home in Connecticut to New York City for over 35 years. I particularly love American history across all eras. I have many favorite authors but Robert Caro stands out among all of them. My favorite Americans are in no particular order: Washington, Hamilton, John Marshall, George Marshall, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Henry Stimson.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:

China The Novel by Edward Rutherfurd by Edward Rutherfurd Edward Rutherfurd

My name is Tom Tatlow. I currently live in Orlando, FL, USA. However, I have previously lived in Thailand, South Africa and eSwatini.

Most of my years I have been an avid reader of fiction. But I recently come to love history and especially the biographies of important historical people. We can learn many lessons from history which helps us understand the challenges facing society today.

Thank you for this group. I will look forward to learning and sharing with you.

The Editorial | 1 comments Hi everyone!!
I am an avid reader and a lover of history. Before, I used to think that history was just about dead kings and useless dates, but, I realized it's much more than that. It's the conversation between the past and the present, it is the story of life. I guess it the way you've been taught history, the sad fact is, that everyone, including children and teachers are bound to this unwritten law that history is boring and no matter what you can do, it cannot be interesting. But, I met a teacher who was out of the box, from the way she talked, thought and spoke, she taught me the truth of history. Yup, and this is why I joined this group :)

Poppy | 1 comments Hello, I'm Poppy.
I work in hospitality: a plush establishment, patronised by more gentle, conservative folk. I work. I walk. I read. I work. I walk. I read.
I don't know just yet what I really wanted to read, I'm just picking books from the small library where I work. I hope to find friends and share thoughts on what I do read.
I'm very new to this: I'm all ears or should I say, "All eyes."

Changho Sohn | 1 comments Hello, I am Changho from South Korea, currently living in Beijing, China. I read widely from the east to the west, from the antiquities to current affairs. Interest switches depending on my mood. One day, I would be following the waning days of the Roman Empire treading through Stilicho, Aetius, and Attila, and the other day, I would be meandering through the Medieval Days of Delhi Sultanate in Northern India. Then again, Sima Qian of the Chinese Han Dynasty might wake my appetite while the Shogunate of Tokugawa in Japan might take me through Japan just before its Meiji Restoration. To put it simply, any term, place, or name that sounds exotic, I am all in. As for American history, the Civil War, the Pacific, and the 19th century expansionism is where my interest lies.. but honestly....so many ground to cover.

Changho

John | 1 comments Hello, I’m John. I took early retirement and with a large garden/orchard I have become almost self sufficient: my responsibilities at present rest with a small group of not-so-able hedgehogs. The neighbours became aware that I was caring for a hog with one-eye and a hospice seemed to blossom from there. Returning to university, I read history and that led me to such works as: The Great Game - The Struggle for Empire in Central Asia, On Secret Service East of Constantinople - The Plot to Bring Down the British Empire, and the like; all of which gripped me and I class as exceptional thriller/suspense/mysteries. My grandmother on my mother’s side was a White Russian and as youngster she left Russia in 1921, under the care of her father and mother. Her father was killed in Ukraine; and so she made the crossing from France to Blighty with her mother in November of 1923. From their accounts the journey across Europe was most harrowing. My mother has the family book and the the dairies of both her grandparents. I have often thought of creating a manuscript from those, but feel unqualified and not able to do justice to their story. There is no mention in my great-grandparent’s memoirs of escape lines and safe houses, but my grandmother, during her later years with what she excused as her failing memory, often spoke of ‘the kindest of people’ and how they are the only reason she survived. I spend time researching escape-lines, underground networks and life-in-the shadows. I won’t claim a need to find evidence of who might have helped my grandmother, as I am content with a desire to more fully understand the ways and means by which many sought to resist oppression even in the face of the great risk to them and their family. I yearn for well-researched, real-life thrillers focused on 20th Century Europe.

Beth | 1 comments Hi, …. one and all,

I am Bethany (I answer to Beth) and I’m a farmer’s girl. The family have a farm here in Ireland and I just adore the life. I have a great family, Mum and Dad and three bothers: none of whom read.

I’m not happy with noisy places, so avoid the pubs and clubs: I fell off a horse when I was young and banged my tiny brain quite hard (weeks in the hospital, as I couldn’t remember too much after it) although the doctors don’t believe or know if that has anything to do with it - I just get wrinkly in crowded, noisy places.

My brothers are all married and their wives are great; me, …. I’m in my early twenties and intend to avoid that BIG STEP for a good few years yet.

My reading has gone all over the place since school; of late - and why I joined Goodreads - I have the urge for exiting recent history accounts and true to life stories: it started by reading, ‘Out of Africa’. A few books later I came upon, ’Touching the Void’, which took my breath away. My eldest brother is a climber (not so much now, as he has a daughter), but that was better that any thriller I had read. I really enjoy reading about girls that have done good and although I’m sure I’ll never stray too far from the farm, I do dream of what some women have achieved. Stories of SOE girls and the like are becoming my favourite right now.

I hope to pick up tips from y’all, who’ve probably been at it far longer than me.

Jimp | 1 comments Hello Group,
James Patrick, I'm known by all as 'Jimp' - my elder brothers started that (short for JimmyP) and so it was carried over to school and then my adult life. My wife-to-be, when we first met, thought it most funny. Jimp, I find from her, [a Norwegian], in the English dictionary means: scant, slender and I am slender [long-distance runner slender]. A sport I love and love much more as it helped break the ice when I met Tordis (Tor): an angel. Tor she told me means Thor. I'm most fascinated by thriller/suspense - fiction/non-fiction and have always taken an interest in books concerning the modern history of Europe and of late more the second war and the years post those dark times. If anyone has recommendations, I would be most grateful. Happy reading to all.
