Welcome Maverick, we are happy that you have joined us in the History Book Club. Thank you for your interesting introduction and sharing your interests in history.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following focus areas:

Ancient History
Medieval History

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:
A Distant Mirror The Calamitous 14th Century by Barbara W. Tuchman by Barbara W. Tuchman Barbara W. Tuchman

violetderey Hi folks, I'm a relative newcomer to reading history. I'm most interested in European history and lately have been consumed by reading nonfiction about English Monarchs. I've been looking at focus group threads and wish I'd begun my interest in history decades ago - so many interesting books!
I like that this group has strict rules and moderation. One question I have is: which thread nominates the next spotlighted book? I see the weekly discussion threads on an A.R. trilogy. (I also realized just now that I'll have to use my tablet if I want to post a specific book; I don't see an option to "add book" and think the rule on book/author posts is excellent.)

Welcome Violetderay, we are happy that you have joined us in the History Book Club. Thank you for your interesting introduction and sharing your diverse interests in history. Jan Z (jrgreads) I am from the US (Wisconsin). After graduating college with a BS in History, I returned to school and added an Accounting major. I am now a CPA. I did manage to use the combination as I am treasurer for our local historical society.
I was in a history book club at the Library. It was discontinued during the pandemic. My favorite book we read there was Killers of the Flower Moon. I enjoy public history, biographies of interesting but little know people, some true crime, narrative history, and many other kinds of history.

Harvey | 1 comments Hello everyone. My name is Harvey and I'm from the North-West of England.

History is a fairly new interest of mine. I enjoy British history more than anything, primarily Medieval Britain to around the Stuart era. It wasn't until recently that I started reading historical-themed books and I'd say that reading these historical-themed books has rejuvenated my interest in reading.

I plan on studying Medieval to Early Modern history in university.

Mary | 1 comments Hi, my name is Mary,
I’m studying history at present and have the most remarkable opportunity of living with a retired history teacher: an awfully kind lady: my good friend’s mother. This week I sat my first-year exams and according to my mentor, I smashed it, "Yippe-Dippee-Doo-Daa."
I struggled at school and family, when I lived at home, laughed at me for trying to improve myself through books. Until I joined Goodreads, I would read high-street novels, but now - outside of my studies - I’m reading European political intrigue: to me these works are more thrilling than the novels I once read.
I did, before leaving Manchester, talk to a man, in his late years, on the bus to work: he told me, a good book will always teach you something.
I don't do social media, I did, but suffered too much abuse. I get upset easily. I am tiny and I was very timid.
I now live in the south-east corner of Britain. I work in a garden centre and love it.
I will try and read all the posts; I can't promise I'll add to them.
Please be kind to me.

My name is Laurentia and I am new to Goodreads, looking to connect with some like-minded bookworms! I'm currently studying for a degree in History with my dissertation focus on the Red Summer of 1919 and the following few years of race riots across the USA.

I have an interest in books about polar exploration, my new favourite book is 'A Madhouse at the End of the Earth' by Julian Sanction, so please let me know if you're reading it as I would love to chat about it with someone!

I'm looking forward to connecting with members and getting recommendations from this group so please add me as a friend and drop me a message!

I am Cathy, originally from Trivandrum, Kerala. I've been brought up in Malaysia and Singapore most if of my life. I'm currently pursuing grad school at Duke University in Engineering Management. My foray into WW history commenced in 8th grade, a time when I unflinchingly supported communism and was trying to get inspired into Holocaust history through fiction reads such as Book Thief. I'm currently trying to start afresh in my journey from the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. Any recommendations and good books with a mix of history and a deep dive into important personalities would be the ideal experience I seek. Thank you and hope to contribute back to this community as well!

Hello Liu,

It is great to have you as part of this group. I would suggest taking a look at some of the books by a historian who recently passed away, David McCullough. I have found his histories really bring to life the people he writes about and the time in which they lived. You can find his books here: David McCullough

Welcome!

Tom Tatlow

Andrea Engle | 2093 comments Tom, I second the motion! David McCullough is the quintessential American historian. Liu, you might want to start out at the very beginning of American history with 1776, or try his take on President Harry Truman, a more recent President. Both are excellent!

Andrea

A warm welcome Scott from all of us in the History Book Club. We are happy that you have joined us from Australia. Thank you for your nice introduction and sharing your interests in history. Please feel free to join in the many discussions.

This is an example of how the book you mentioned should look:

My name is Tom, I am Polish and live in Luxembourg. I am an avid reader of history and historical fiction, with a special interest in Mediterranean and Near Eastern antiquity, US history, modern European history, and modern Far Eastern history (I am a Chinese and Japanese speaker). History interest me because it is a way to learn more about us. Living here and now, we know a little about how we are now. But looking back, shows us how we can be under other circumstances and broadens our view of humanity. I am also a translator of books on those topics.

Alan Yuodsnukis | 1 comments Hello, Alan Y here. The last name is nearly unpronounceable, so my students and colleagues just call me "Mr. Y." I am a high school teacher, traveler, camper, sometime writer, and dog walker from Maine, that place in the woods somewhere past New York but before you get to Canada. I spend too much time standing in rivers waving a long, bendy stick around trying to convince critters with brains the size of a pea that a few bits of feathers and fur tied to a hook might be something good to eat. Oh, and I like to read.

One of my many character flaws is that I read almost exclusively non-fiction, and most of that with a historical bent. I particularly like what I call "personal histories", those books focusing on a person or small group of people who acted on the larger stage of a great event or certain historical era, but in coming to know them and their story closely, we also get deeper insights into that event or era. The particular event or era doesn't matter. My favorites include works ranging from stories about conflicts and crises to adventure and exploration to memoirs and sports. What really matters is great writing. I'm looking forward to talking about truly good historical writing, getting recommendations on some new titles to read, and suggesting a few as well.

Mark | 1 comments Hello everyone! My name is Mark. I am new here and I want to take a moment to introduce myself. I live in Fairfax, VA; about 30 minutes outside of Washington, D.C.

I have always been interested in history. I have a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Maryland, College Park where I focused primarily on communism/post-communism in Eastern Europe. I also like to say I minored in history because of how many history courses I took to accompany my major. While I did take US history courses, most of the courses I took were in Eastern European history. Most of my US history background is in post-WWII.

I am joining this group because I want to expand my knowledge of US history from the late 19th century through WWII. I took a course or two in college covering this period, but they were a very brief overview of the period. I am hoping for book recommendations to get me started. This is an enormous undertaking, so I plan to break the period down into 15-20 year increments starting with about 1900 through the end of WWI. I am interested in learning about economic, social, and political history as well as WWI.

Thanks!

Donald Weaver | 1 comments Hi, everyone. I'm Don and I look forward to hearing and learning from members of this group. Like most people, my interests change over the years. As a teenager, I was really interested in the US Civil War. I got busy with school and life and work and could not read as much as I liked. But, starting in the 90s, I got back into the Civil War, though my emphasis was on the politics of the era -- from the various pressure groups and political parties that appeared, to the southern religious justification for slavery. Great, great stuff to learn and see how it impacts today's views.
Recently I am spending more time on classical Greece. I have been reading Homer and the tragedies for a few years and they intersect with the history of the time. I'm watching a Great Courses video about the Peloponnesian war. I am also reading a 2018 bio of Alcibiades, who was the donald trump of that time. The book is Nemesis: Alcibiades and the Fall of Athens by David Stuttard.

At the same time, I'm reading about the U2 flights at the end of the Eisenhower era. The book is Mayday: Eisenhower, Khrushchev, and the U-2 Affair by Michael R. Beschloss.
