Gjøa | 1 comments Hi,

I’m Gjoa. I’m new to goodreads, but not new to reading copious amounts of history books. I joined because I find the best books come from recommendations and look forward to finding new gems. I’m open to most topics and love reading about a topic from multiple viewpoints/authors before moving on to another subject. Most recently I’ve been reading books about the history of nuclear power, catherine the great, and the cultural revolution.

Gjoa, a warm welcome to you from all of us at the History Book Club. We are happy that you joined us. Thank you too for your very interesting introduction.

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Hello Group!

I’m new to the group but certainly not to reading/writing or enjoying what others create.
In the real world I own an Independent Publishing Company and love finding ways to support authors around the world, even if wen don’t publish them.
Joining this group is a fun and educational way to broaden more of what I read while having conversations with people who don’t see me as a CEO but just as another bibliophile, like themselves.
Nonfiction is my jam, I’m an avid tea drinker and I collect teacups as much as books.

Write On!
Meaghan

Dan Hill | 2 comments Greetings, my name is Dan Hill and I and my wife split our time between Minnesota (St. Paul) and California (Palm Desert). My way "into" history was via biographies, which I began devouring in 2nd grade. Call it a search for heroes, however flawed. But always seeking to understand the motives and, ideally, the values that shape the people, events, and movements of history. Always hoping the answer is greater that money, e.g. Dylan's line "money doesn't talk, it swears."

Lizzie Peterson (snowlynn) | 1 comments Hi! My name is Lizzie and I'm from the US. I gained a love of history through the study of anthropology, because I love trying to understand where we came from, and why those before us made the decisions they did. I particularly enjoy ancient history, and how our ancient past affects more recent history and modern day society. I joined because I hope to expand my horizons a little and have discussions with people who also share a love of history.

Agnes Hello, everyone. I’m happy to be among a group of history lovers. I was born and grew up in Virginia, USA, which almost requires an undying interest in history. American history, the Civil War, and American Indian history are my favorites. Right now I’m trying to understand the causes of the Civil War. As one who was educated in Virginia, I’m not sure I have an accurate picture. My father kept Lee’s Lieutenants on his bedside table, right beside, his Bible. I’m ready to learn facts, not just the (possibly) mythology I grew up with.
Right now I’m reading about Thomas Jefferson, a longtime hero of mine.

Thalassophile_takemetotheocean (thalassophile-takemetotheocean) | 74 comments Hi all,
My name is Rose and I live in Georgia, USA. I have a Masters in Business Administration. I hated history class in high school. It was my worst subject. As I got older, I started reading more. Books are more detailed than textbooks. I started reading about World War 1 and World War 2. I became so fascinated with the Holocaust and reading true stories from survivors of the concentration camps, as well as the SS Officers who knew what they were doing was wrong but had to follow orders.

I also started reading books on the Titanic, John D Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Henry Ford, etc. I also enjoy that series "The Men who Built America".

Kathy | 154 comments Hi, my name is Kathy and I've read a number of history books over the years about all sorts of topics. I can't say there is any history topic that I'm not interested in (however focusing on battle formations which I suffered through in a Civil War class in college is not my thing). In the past few years, my history reading has fallen off substantially and I want to get myself back into it. I've started a number of books but can't seem to finish them in recent years (and it's not because they are poorly written or boring other things just get in the way). I've never joined an online reading club before. I live in Vermont in the US and as there is no local history reading group, I thought I'd give this a try to get myself back into it. My question is how do I join discussion groups and events for specific books? I can't seem to find how you join them. I'm part way through the Federalist Papers and would love to join that discussion group for instance. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Jill | 1 comments Hello all! I've read comments from Goodreads members for years on various websites and thought that the notion of an online book club is wonderful. I live in the mid-Atlantic (USA) and have developed an interest in history as I've approached middle age. I periodically teach a college course in the history of psychology and my interests now include the histories of science and philosophy, intellectual histories, and the (very broad) history of Western civilization. Looking forward to sharing thoughts with others!

An interesting theory of the cause was advanced by Allan Nevins in his multi volume work started in the 1940's

Ordeal of the Union, Vol 1 Fruits of Manifest Destiny 1847-52 by Allan Nevins
Allan Nevins

Nevins gave credit for starting the fighting to Stephen Douglas. Aside from wishing to become President himself, the Senator thought Congress had become unable to deal with the issue of slavery. His idea was to promote popular sovereignty as the solution to clear the issue from Congress so Congress could get on with it's most important business, selecting a northern route for the transcontinental railroad. But things didn't turn out quite the way he imagined.

Babs (ohayojade) | 1 comments Hello. My name is Babs. I live in the USA in Florida. I'm recently retired and extremely happy to have a lot more time to read. I joined the group because it's international and I prefer reading books with detailed recommendation. As there are so many book choices, I want to spend my time on those most appealing to my own interests. Because I read a lot, I am most grateful to have lending libraries otherwise I could not afford my reading habit! :) Thank you for this forum.

Beth | 1 comments Hi! My name is Beth and I live in New Jersey.

I belong to two bookclubs, but they focus mainly on fiction, so I am very excited to find this group.

My interests tend toward American History, especially the Civil War. However, I am hoping (expecting?) that my boundaries will be extended by being in this group and that I may find other historical topics that are just as interesting to me!

Here’s to stretching my horizons!

Troy (pentheus) | 4 comments Hi all. I'm Troy-a native Californian. I'm a lifelong learner and longtime history buff with degrees in early modern European history, and minors in Asian history. Some of my favorite topics: Historiography (with a particular interest in the Annales school), Jesuit history, witches and witch crazes, the historiography of King Arthur, secret societies (especially in China), world war II, Southeast Asian history (more specifically, Thai history), and all different kinds of cultural history.

I particularly enjoy the synergies I get when I put strong histories together with good quality historical fiction.

I look forward to learning from you all.

Welcome to the club Daniel,

I have a couple of suggestions for you. First, within the Goodreads, there are clubs with a more specific focus. As Thomas Cranmer is one of your special interests, you might consider looking at the Tudor History Lovers Club" where we read everything Tudor related. Second is a reading recommendation. With your interest in Church History, you should checkout Southern Cross The Beginnings of the Bible Belt by Christine Leigh Heyrman by Christine Leigh Heyrman (no photo). It was an absolutely fascinating examination of the devlopement of the evangelical movement in the U.S.
