საშუალო გიურზა Hello, my name is Vendalent3000(not using my real name for safety reasons lol). I'm from Georgia(not the US state) and have been reading for like 4-5 years. I used to read alot of fiction back when I first started but now I mostly read self-help, history and political genre tho I do sometimes throw one fiction if i get bored. I hope I
do get to meet new people and feel less sad whenever I look at my friens list and asking for recommendations on specific history topics from people better than me lol.

A warm welcome, Vendalent3000, from all of us in the History Book Club. We are happy that you have joined us from the country of Georgia. Thank you for your introduction and sharing your interests. Please feel free to join in the many discussions.

There are many folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well so please feel free to explore our many diverse threads. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:

Four Lost Cities A Secret History of the Urban Age by Annalee Newitz by Annalee Newitz Annalee Newitz

Demetrios | 10 comments Hello, my name is Demetrios and I live in North East Ohio, I am currently a college student at Youngstown State University. Going for an integrated social studies education degree, and a history minor with the hopes of becoming a history teacher. I enjoy reading typically non-fiction. More then often than not I am reading history, and I am always trying to broaden my education in the subject. I am intrigued in joining the group to see what books I could add to my constantly full to-read list.

It isn't censorship, it is moderating, to prevent people with axes to grind about censorship on Twitter from trying to win the internet in discussion boards where others come to talk about books, not sell them.

Michael, the best way to start is to familiarize yourself with the areas where there have been previous book discussions. The following is the link that will take you to previous BOOK OF THE MONTH discussions. https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

Once there, you can follow previous book discussions to see if any of those books may be of interest to you.

There is also an ongoing discussion of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS. The link is as follows: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Hope this gives you a little more direction.

Christopher Zinn | 1 comments Hi, Chris from Rockville, MD. Stay-at-home dad for special needs kids. Trying to teach myself Japanese, not very successfully. We have a VERY active Australian Shepherd who keeps me active too.

I’ve been in a fiction-oriented book club for about 22 years.l, but my personal reading leans toward history and biography. What I’ve tended to do is to read history, discover gaps in my knowledge that interest me, and try to fill those gaps with my next book. But sometimes I just pick a book at random from my want to read list. I’ve found it very satisfying.

My last book was Daniel Walker Howe’s “What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848,” and it thrilled me. I now understand why historians compare Donald Trump with Andrew Jackson.

I joined Goodreads because whenever I talk about a book on Facebook/Twitter/Post./etc, everyone’s eyes glaze over. Trying to find out whether I’m speaking to the wrong audience, or if it’s just me.

I'm a retired software developer, but if you look at my academic background, I have a B.A. in History (started at Brandeis but finished the degree at the University of Rhode Island) and an improbable Master's Degree in the History and Philosophy of Science from IU.

I was prompted to join while in the middle of Chernow's Grant. My current interests include the Civil War, 19th and 20th US history, reconstruction, and Black History.

Cuba looks interesting, but I think I'm a bit late for that one. I look forward to seeing what else comes along. Glad to be here -- please feel free to say hi.

Alison McBain | 9 comments Hello everyone,

I'm a long-time history buff living in Canada who enjoys reading about all time periods and cultures. Many years ago, I studied African history and classical literature at university, and I really like learning something new about a time period or culture I've never read about before.

I'm currently reading:
Bury the Chains by Adam Hochschild - it's about a grassroots attempt that started in London in the late 1700s to end slavery. When I'm done with it, I'm looking forward to starting the Cuba book recommended here.

I'm a relative newbie when it comes to participating in book groups, so I'm looking forward to reading some great new recommendations and chatting with everyone.

All best,
Alison

It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:

Washington A Life by Ron Chernow by Ron Chernow Ron Chernow

Adrian | 1 comments Hello everyone,

My name is Adrian, I am 28 year old programmer from Bucharest, Romania who lives by himself. I enjoy history, SF and self-help books.

I didn't enjoy reading when I was a kid, but about 4 years ago I discovered my love for reading, and since then I've read 20+ books. I know this isn't much, but since I was at 0 before I would say that is a big improvement.

For 2023 I have set a goal of 40 books.

Nice to meet you everyone!

Cheers,
Adrian

Doug Evans | 1 comments My name is Doug Evans. I was a history major at the University of Virginia and a tour guide at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello during the mid-to-late 90s when the Sally Hemings relationship was really making headlines. I also studied for two years at the University of Kentucky with Lance Banning. I’ve never stopped reading histories and am far more excited about a new 800-page brick of a book about the American Revolution than I’ll ever be about a fiction bestseller. I also read a lot of music biographies (jazz and rock, mostly). Good to be here.
