Welcome Mackenzie Scarlott. Thank you for your interesting introduction outlining your interests in history. We are happy that you have joined us in the History Book Club from the state of Kentucky. Best wishes with your continued studies.

Based on some of your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following threads:

European History
Medieval History

There are many folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well so please feel free to explore our many diverse threads. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:

Ryan Lawler | 1 comments Hi Everyone!

My name is Ryan and I live in Central Florida. I grew up in south Florida and was the seventh generation born in the state. I’m married and have three wonderful kids. I work in IT and Software development but have always enjoyed history as a hobby. My grandfather initially introduced me to history by telling me stories of WW2 which grew into us traveling all over the east coast of the US visiting historic battle fields, landmarks, cemeteries, etc. I have a soft spot for The Revolutionary and Civil war time periods. Looking forward to using some of my free time to dive into some books and discussion!

I think a lot of people are put off by the idea of reading historical fiction, but, as a big fan of the genre, I really think there are so many reasons to read historical fiction. My favourite books are The Physician, Red Winter Journey and anything Dickens.

Cale Judd | 2 comments Hi, y’all! I’m Cale Judd, hailing from Northern California where I now live in retirement with my wife Merlene and our dog Katy. My formal educational background is in business administration, accounting, and Bible/theology.

I already have more unread volumes in my library than I could possibly hope to complete in this life, so I may be rash in joining this group, but I do love to read and I love history. A knowledge of history informs us of our heritage, helps us to understand who we are, broadens our perspective, and imparts wisdom through the experiences of others. Ancient history, particularly in the Levant, is my current area of interest.

My academic background is political science. Naturally, I am drawn to political history. In general, I am interested in the history of Canada, US, Scotland and Ireland. In the last couple of years I have been trying to expand my knowledge and understanding of the indigenous peoples of North America and their history through my reading selections. I have a number of German history books in my TBR pile to be read over the next couple of years. I also appreciate historical fiction which accurately captures the people and culture of the time. I am looking forward to reading the thoughts of others through this group.

spoko (spokospoko) Hi—I’m Matt, though online I generally go by spoko. I live smack in the middle of the USA (Nebraska). Was born & raised here, though in the interim I’ve lived in a couple other states as well as France, Poland and Russia.

I co-majored in History for my undergrad degree, so certainly I’m interested in it generally. Beyond that, I mostly read nonfiction, and that does generally mean reading a fair share of history. I’m interested in an array of historical subjects; lately the ones I’ve found most compelling are espionage and science (though not medicine). Political history is an evergreen interest for me. Looking through the group’s bookshelf, I see quite a few books that I’ve either enjoyed or wanted to read, so I’m sure I’ll find plenty here.

William Moses | 1 comments Hi All, my name is William. I have always been interested in reading biographies, especially biographies of twentieth century and twenty-first century figures. I am currently reading Amy Butler Greenfield's "The Woman All Spies Fear". Before that I read David McCullough's "Truman." In the past, I have devoured biographies of FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt. I am looking for interesting material focusing on aspects of the post World War I era, as well as the the New Deal era. Post revolutionary Russia interests me as well--anything about Lenin or Stalin. Hey, wait a minute, did I forget to say how much I love true stories about crime and spies? I am interested in reading historical accounts of the automobile and railroad industries. And here is the title of a book I would like to read: "The History of Commercial Aviation."
Cheers,

It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is just a reminder to all members that the History Book Club does not allow any self-promotion or advertising regarding any books, manuscripts, publications or blogs. That includes any mention of authorship. Essentially, there is to be no personal marketing whatsoever. Posts that are in violation of that rule will be deleted. This is a thread for introductions to tell us about yourself and to share your interests in history.

Hannah (poobiebird) Hello, my name is Hannah and I'm a 21 year old from the US. I actually developed a strong interest in History after graduating HS; it was one of my weakest subjects and I thought trying to remember all those names and numbers and reading long paragraphs was just boring.

The past few years I've looked at history from a different perspective: How did people experience life in this place at this time? It's intrigued me to learn for the sake of learning and not a homework grade.

I'm most interested in European History and Medieval History from 11th century to 19th century. I also enjoy learning things about Ancient History.

I wanted to join the group to expand my lists of books available to me to read. I look forward to learning more through discussion and book lists.

Eva, this is such a cute message. Made me smile. I also hated history in school, but developed a personal interest later on. I'm sure your partner presents information in an interesting way that makes you want to learn more!

Hannah, I am so glad you decided to give it a go. I loved history in college, but didn't see what I might do with a degree in history. While I am happy I pursued a different career, now, about all I read is history and you are right, you can learn so much.

Ryan Stevens | 2 comments Happy to be a part of the group! A little about me:

I am from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I am a lover of figure skating, historical non-fiction and a good Victorian or Edwardian era book or television series. I read everything from Margaret Atwood to Agatha Christie to old skating reference books from the 19th century.

I'm always on the hunt for a great new book and am looking forward to finding some great suggestions here and connecting with all of you! :)

Kristine | 8 comments Hi, thank you for letting me join this group. I love history and learning more each day. I love reading both fiction and non-fiction, all different types of books. I currently live in North Carolina, but still am a New Yorker in heart as I lived there 50 years. Miss the Ocean.

Love that you picked Cuba: An American History, Ada Ferrer as a book to discuss. I am very interested in this one.

My other interests are love 💕 hiking with my dog, Jasper 🐶🐾. Gardening 👩‍🌾 (try, but learning different climate), knitting 🧶, sewing 🧵, cooking 🧑‍🍳 try all different types of foods.

Have a Great day and Happy Reading to Everyone. If anyone interested in being friends, send a request, happy to know some of you in this group. 📚💕
