This is just a reminder to all members that the History Book Club does not allow any self-promotion or advertising regarding any books, manuscripts, publications or blogs. That includes any mention of authorship. Essentially, there is to be no personal marketing whatsoever. Posts that are in violation of that rule will be deleted. This is a thread for introductions to tell us about yourself and to share your interests in history.

Laura Francavilla | 1 comments Hi! I'm Laura, from New York. I am a recent college graduate and earned my BA in History this year, so I am very excited to have joined this group. I love all aspects of history, but my passion is Ancient History. I love reading and will read almost anything!!

I'm relatively new to Goodreads so I'm still figuring out how it works. I also have read the Group Guidelines and hope I have followed them correctly up to this point. Can't wait to get started here!! :)

Welcome Laura, we are happy that you have joined us in the History Book Club from New York. Thank you for your introduction about your interests in history. Please feel free to join in the many discussions.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following focus areas:

Ancient History

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:

A Distant Mirror The Calamitous 14th Century by Barbara W. Tuchman by Barbara W. Tuchman Barbara W. Tuchman

Elizabeth (elizabethlk) | 2 comments Hello!

My name is Elizabeth. I'm 30, I'm Canadian, and live in southwestern Ontario. I have a number of serious health issues, so I'm on disability and don't have a job/education background to share with everyone. I like reading, writing, and anything that involves a good story.

I love reading (or watching documentaries) about history, and I have ever since I was a kid. I don't have just one specific area I'm interested in, but stuff I enjoy learning about includes Canadian history, Black and Indigenous history in North America, queer history, Jewish history, labour history, women's history, Victorian English history, literary history, film history, medieval European history, Imperial Chinese history, and probably more. If I'm learning twentieth century history, I really prefer it to be the first three decades. I generally prefer social and cultural history over learning about wars and such, but I do also enjoy learning biographical history about interesting people. Some of my favourite history related books I've read this year are Medical Bondage: Race, Gender, and the Origins of American Gynecology, Wake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts, Nova Graphica: A Comic Anthology of Nova Scotia History, and Heroines, Rescuers, Rabbis, Spies: Unsung Women of the Holocaust.

Basically there's a ton of stuff I'm interested in, and I'm excited to get the chance to explore some of it further in this group.

Medical Bondage Race, Gender, and the Origins of American Gynecology by Deirdre Cooper Owens by Deirdre Cooper Owens
Wake The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts by Rebecca Hall by Rebecca Hall

Hisham Khan | 4 comments Hello everyone.

My name is Hisham Khan. I am a young lad from Pakistan and a modest reader, with a taste for history. Joined this group to further my interest in the genre generally and get recommendations and read interesting discussions specifically.

I like reading history from any period and dare say any country, but nowadays I gravitate to histories of the Islamic world, World wars, religions, historical anthropology, the West and of course my own country!

Further, I hope to discover works(besides the topics mentioned) on the histories of India, China, and Latin America, and of course many more.

Though I might not be significantly active, I do hope to engage and participate in this group!

Matthew Ball | 1 comments Hi, my name is Matthew and I live in Manchester, England. I have been interested in history for a while but have never joined a book club before.

I am potentially interested in any era and place, provided the author does a good job of bringing the subject to life.

My favourite recent read was "The Perfect King" by Ian Mortimer, which is a biography of Edward III, who was King of England from 1327 to 1377. Another book that is very well written, and which could be topical at the moment (given what is in the cinemas right now), is "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" by Richard Rhodes.

I like biography and current affairs books as well, so my tastes are quite eclectic...

I'm Ismail from Toronto, Canada. I work in IT. Growing up, I spent a lot of time reading in the library as my mother was a local librarian. That time sparked my interest in history. I'm particularly drawn to Islamic history and the High Middle Ages. Recently, I've been learning about King Alfred and England's formation. I joined this group to explore more about history and see what else catches my interest. Thanks for having me!

Ling Nell | 1 comments I was born and raised in California. Reading has always been an integral part of my upbringing. My mother would bring me to bookstores every week to pick out a new book. Sadly, in the particular area I was raised in California, many topics weren't thoroughly addressed in school. This included science, history and culture. Since becoming an adult, I try to fill in the gaps with reading various books that cover these topics. I am particularly drawn to the history of science and the history of countries that aren't covered in American curriculum. Essentially, that includes ALL of history. Even American history because it isn't properly portrayed in many of the outdated textbooks I studied from in grade school.

Tom Green | 2 comments Hello! I'm a father of two, professional nerd, and am from Texas, USA. I've been obsessed with World War II history for several years now after stumbling onto a Swedish power metal band called Sabaton.

It sounds absurd, but that was what really accelerated my interest in war/conflict history. I greatly enjoy personal stories from/about such intense times and events.

I'm hoping to discover more titles to read and also to contribute to the group.

It seems like my interest in history also affected my elder son, who is 17, who is also very much into good history books, especially WWII, so I'm even working on bringing in future members hopefully..:)

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following focus areas:

American History

The British Are Coming The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777 (The Revolution Trilogy, 1) by Rick Atkinson by Rick Atkinson Rick Atkinson

Angelo Farina | 1 comments Hi, my name is Angelo and I hail from Canada. I am getting back into reading after many busy years, with zero time for my precious hobby. I like history, biographies and geopolitics.
As I came to Canada later in life, thus have some gaps in Canadiana, I would like to get suggestions about quintessential Canadian history books for my "to-read" list.
Thanks

Sophie Allan | 1 comments Hello, my name is Sophie and I live in Glasgow, Scotland! I have just finished my History and Politics BA(Hons) degree at Glasgow Caledonian Univeristy! I am currently training to be a History Lectuer, so hence the interest in this group! Only until recently though have I really endorsed my history reading as due to my education, my preferred reading genres had to take a backseat so I could complete the mandatory reading for my course. During my studies, I specialised in Scottish and British Empire studies, with particular focus on the connections Scotland has with Colonialism and Slavery - a very undiscussed and taboo topic within Scottish historiography. However, my other history pursuits are predominantly modern history c. 1600-2000s (right now I am interested in the rise and fall of the Soviet Union!)

Fun fact, in High School I actually detested History. It was my most loathed subject to attend, but I am putting that down to the teaching style and the topics - often very limited in variety and scope, which I feel hinders the history learning experience but I digress.

Overall, I joined this group to discover new topics to research as there is never enough of history to uncover and chat with other History lovers!

Thanks for letting me join
Sophie :)

Welcome to the History Book Club, Brian. We are happy that you have joined us from Springfield, Illinois. Thank you for your introduction and sharing your interests in history. I know you are interested in the discussion on Ada Ferrer's book. However, Bentley will need to decide on the dates there will be a group discussion. I don't have any information at this time.

You did a wonderful job with your book citations, Brian. My only suggestion would be at the end of a paragraph, you would then cite the books mentioned. It just makes it easier to read the text, but a fine job.

Brian E Reynolds Lorna, I think I see what I did wrong. I have a question, though. When putting the book reference in the text rather than afterwards are you prohibited from using the blue links?
If I understand it correctly, the relevant section of my comment should have looked like this:

My current non-fiction is: Custer's Trials A Life on the Frontier of a New America by T.J. Stiles. (Custer's Trials: A Life on the Frontier of a New America by T.J. Stiles?) I am joining because I saw you will be reading: Cuba: An American History by Ada Ferrer (Cuba: An American History by Ada Ferrer?) which I want to read as I have owned a copy for over a year and am excited to be able to read it with your Group.

Logan B. | 1 comments Hello! My name is Logan, and I am a civil engineer and history enthusiast from Phoenix, Arizona. I’m particularly interested in ancient and Renaissance history with focus on the Middle East and the Mediterranean. I studied a Minor in European history during University, and my first love of history came when I was a child learning about the Romans. Currently, I am reading as much as I can about Iranian history as I am of Persian descent and wish to connect more with my cultural and historical heritage. I’m fairly new to GoodReads, so any recommendations are welcome.
