Welcome Logan, we are happy that you have joined us in the History Book Club from Phoenix, Arizona. Thank you for your interesting introduction and sharing your interests in history.

Based on some of your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following threads:

Roman Empire - The History
Europe - European History
World History
Middle East History

There are many folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well so please feel free to explore our many diverse threads. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:

Caesar Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy by Adrian Goldsworthy Adrian Goldsworthy

Camila (timshel26) | 1 comments Hello! My name is Camila and I'm from Kazakhstan (you probably have a lot of members from here/joking). I love reading, though I wouldn't call myself a history buff, but I'd really love to read more history books.

Umm, I'm quite introverted, even on the internet, and looking through the community guidelines, I saw that participation is required, and to be honest I'm not quite sure I'd be able to keep up with the discussions, just thought I would give a fair warning!

In terms of my history interests, I really love Stone Age and Early Civilizations, and would love to know more about that time. And when it comes to the nearer history, I feel like my knowledge of the Global East and the Global South is lagging behind, and so I would love to do some reading of Asia+Africa+South America histories.

This is just a reminder to all members that the History Book Club does not allow any self-promotion or advertising regarding any books, manuscripts, publications or blogs. That includes any mention of authorship in any language. Essentially, there is to be no personal marketing whatsoever. Posts that are in violation of that rule will be deleted. Vincent (vpbrancato) | 1248 comments Hello Moderators (where is Bentley?) -
Well I have;t read much with HBC for a while but now I will suggest a book that I just finished

The People's Tycoon: Henry Ford and the American Century
Steven Watts

It is a great first half 20th century history of America from a certain perspective and of who was a constantly visible person regardless of president etc. - until he died - he was not just the man of the assembly line, or the $5/day. or the Model T, or the anti-semite, or the FDR opponent, or the maker of B24 bombers etc. - you can look at my review on Goodreads or contact me but I think that this would be a great book for HBC. - thanks. - Happy New Year

I will send Bentley a note with your suggestion. However, I will let Bentley address your questions upon his return.

Eric (ebturner) | 5 comments Hello!

My name is Eric Turner. Since my earliest days, I have loved reading and loved history. I have been a U.S. history teacher since 2010. Before that, I was an intelligence analyst in the U.S. Army from 1985 to 2006. I have a degree in history. I am linguist certified in German. I also speak Arabic.

My historical reading and research interests are many and include (in no particular order): U.S., European, economic, social, and military history.

Specifically, I am interested in the history, growth, & development of religious, social, and political extremist groups, history of special operations (any period & region), & history of intelligence, espionage, etc (any period & region). I am enthralled with primary sources and tracing history down to its primary sources. I also enjoy the history and development of conspiracy theories although I am no believer in conspiracy theories! I enjoy fashion history, music history, and the history of pop culture as well.

That about sums it up I suppose.

Bob New here. After a career in international business research and consulting, I’m retired now and focused on golf and early religious history. Many of the books mentioned here, however, would be interesting alternatives to read — if I could find them. Most are not available in our Tucson, AZ libraries and I’m not into buying. I mostly read on my iPad.

Does anyone here have a good library to use for history books — even if you have to enroll in their non-resident program?

Thanks.

Geoffrey Clement | 3 comments Good morning. I just joined the group. Fascinated with history - especially German military history, war, etc. I have a BA - History, University of New Orleans, 1977. Used to be a voracious reader of History, but have slackened significantly in my "older age."
Had the pleasure of being taught by Stephen Ambrose at UNO. Ambrose was quite the historian, storyteller and a fabulous teacher. Very captivating. Of course, he was on the ground floor in planning / developing the WWII museum here in New Orleans. I have many of his books, of which four (4) are personally autographed with some very meaningful comments about my time in his classes.
SORRY - one of my children has already claimed all 4 when I die.
( specific bequests in my Will ).
Looking forward to engaging with my fellow historians.

It was a great experience to be taught by Ambrose. Such an incredible "storyteller". You couldn't help but love history in his classes. I'd go back to his office years later as a lawyer and he welcomed me back and talked forever. I simply wanted an autograph. I was actually in a deposition with 3 attorneys who had his "D-Day" book and assured them that I'd get his autograph for them. I got the books some weeks after and sheepishly had to admit to Ambrose that I "guaranteed" an Ambrose autograph for each. ( Of course, I may have said that we were friends !! ) He laughed, but autographed everything I brought to him.

Another time, my wife gave me his two book "Nixon" set as a Christmas gift. I went in March to get them autographed and he "chewed me out" because the book bindings were still stiff, an indication that they'd not been read at all. He indicated he'd autograph both books, but only after I read them !!! He of course smiled an autographed them anyway.

He passed much too soon.

My best to all,
Geoff

PS - Lots of luck John as you prepare for your examination. I'm sure you'll nail it.

This is just a reminder to all members that the History Book Club does not allow any self-promotion or advertising regarding any books, manuscripts, publications, or blogs. Essentially, there is to be no personal marketing whatsoever. Posts that are in violation of that rule will be deleted. This is a thread for introductions to tell us about yourself and to share your interests in history.

Thank you,
Lorna, Assisting Moderator (T) - Civil Rights and Supreme Court

Welcome to the History Book Club, Charlie. We are happy that you have joined us from the United States. Thank you for your introduction and sharing your interests.

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:

A Distant Mirror The Calamitous 14th Century by Barbara W. Tuchman by Barbara W. Tuchman Barbara W. Tuchman
