Welcome Nancy, we are happy that you have joined us in the History Book Club from The Netherlands. Thank you for your most interesting introduction and sharing your many diverse interests in history.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following focus areas:

American History
Europe - European History
World History
History of Latin America
American Civil War
The Second World War

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:

The British Are Coming The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777 by Rick Atkinson by Rick Atkinson Rick Atkinson

This is just a reminder to all members that the History Book Club does not allow any self-promotion or advertising regarding any books, manuscripts, publications, podcasts, or blogs. Essentially, there is to be no personal marketing whatsoever. Posts that are in violation of that rule will be deleted. This is a thread for introductions to tell us about yourself and to share your interests in history.

My interests focus on world history, where humankind is considered a single entity, and its possible continuation into the future. I prefer to look at world history from a complex system theory viewpoint. I am also interested in discovering if and how people use lessons from history. I found almost zero information in that regard.

Bentley old chap, is there any group in G.R. or indeed in any book group or literary platform anywhere on Planet Earth or even the Universe that has as many rules and regulations as The History Book Club?
I'd suggest it would literally take an average reader days, if not weeks, to read all the rules. It seems you might be in your element, Bentley.

Jack, I’m not sure what you are asking about posting books to this forum. The Japan challenge was over ten years ago. You may use it as a reference. Most of the books that have been added to the threads have been done by moderators and ambassadors over the years with guidelines as outlined by Bentley in their training.

Thank you.

I will have to read more of the forum to understand how to contribute wrt to books on Japanese history. I apologize for my confusion in advance. I have been concentrating on Japanese History from Prehistory to Modern, working through different periods of time. I guess there is no specific Japan thread.

My current read is Meiji 1868: Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Japan by Paul Akamatsu

Paul Akamatsu provides a detail picture of the forces and people at work in the conversion of the Japanese feudal state into a modern nation state in a few decades in the effort not to be colonized by western powers.

Meiji 1868 Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Japan (Routledge Library Editions Japan) by Paul Akamatsu by Paul Akamatsu .

I live in the far NE corner pocket of WA state (basically Idaho/basically Canada) where I raise my two teenagers and encourage my two adult children who live nearby. I have children with complex medical needs, so I have worked in that field for many years. I also work with special needs children in the public school system. I am a Christian (protestant) and love my church, love Jesus and love His people. I have always been crazy about nature, aviation and travel. I don't enjoy fictional literature unless it's a classic, and stick to mostly historical and non-fiction books. As they say, the truth is often stranger than fiction! I love to learn languages and have been studying Russian and Spanish for ten years now. I have traveled to New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Canada, Holland, Ukraine and Brazil as well as all over the United States. Nice to meet you!

I’ve always loved history, and most of my degree, minus the language, is East-Asian history. Everything from Chinese, Japanese, Korean, popular culture, films etc. However I’m really trying to broaden my horizons, read things from other periods, areas, and genres. Hence my joining this group!

Some of my favourite books are:
Ruffians, Yakuza, Nationalists The Violent Politics of Modern Japan, 1860–1960 by Eiko Maruko Siniawer Shadow Shoguns The Rise and Fall of Japan's Postwar Political Machine by Jacob M. Schlesinger

Would love recommendations! Thank you all,

Rudy Hi everyone! I’m Rudy and I am from California, USA. I am a college student studying psychobiology and world literature. I love reading about history because it helps me on my pursuit of knowledge in the complexity of human behavior. Learning about history before college consisted of learning about trade, colonization, and war (which is interesting) but the most interesting aspects of human history for me are all those that you don’t learn about in high school. My love for history ignited during college and now I find myself studying countless cultures and events that magnetize me greatly. I hope to make some friends here, I’ll add back!

Welcome to the History Book Club, Rudy. We are happy that you have joined us from the lovely state of California. Thank you for your most enthusiastic introduction and the expression of your love of history.

There are many folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well so please feel free to explore our many diverse threads.

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:

A Distant Mirror The Calamitous 14th Century by Barbara W. Tuchman by Barbara W. Tuchman Barbara W. Tuchman

Esther | 1 comments Hi, my name is Esther and I live in North Carolina in the US. I'm currently interested in reading more about the post WWII / Cold War era, and it would be helpful to start with a short-list of academic historians who write for the general reader.
