Arnab (arban) | 1 comments Hello All,

I'm Arnab from India. History had been nightmare in school and now decades after leaving school, it turned out to be the most fascinating and joyful discovery. Knowing others with the same interest is always nice and it helps in further development of the pursuit.

I am into marketing. I love clicking photographs.

A warm welcome Arnab, from all of us in the History Book Club. We are happy that you have joined us from India. Thank you for your nice introduction and sharing your interests in history. Please feel free to join in the many discussions.

There are many folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well so please feel free to explore our many diverse threads. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:

Hero of the Empire The Boer War, a Daring Escape, and the Making of Winston Churchill by Candice Millard by Candice Millard Candice Millard

Younes Köhler | 1 comments Hello everyone,

I joined the group a few days ago, but I thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Younes, I live in Germany, and history has been a passion of mine since I was six years old. I can honestly say that history is an integral part of my life and not a day goes by without reading about it.

I am particularly interested in the late antique Near East and Mediterranean (later Roman Empire, Sassanid Empire, early Islamic Caliphates) and in the Early Modern period, particularly Spain, Venice, Naples, and the Ottoman and Safavid Empires.

My combined Arabic and European heritage made me curious about the history of the wider Eurasian world and its transformations over the ages.

Jessalyn Hello, My name is Jessalyn and I am in New Mexico. I am sorry to say that my history reading has been sorely lacking, and I want to change that. I am looking forward to diving in to many different topics.

Chris Hello everyone!

I'm Chris (topher) from Nottinghamshire, UK.

I absolutely love both historical fact and historical fiction; mainly Scottish, Middle Ages and Tudor history.

My favourite authors are C J Sansom and Phillipa Gregory.

I've been looking for a decent history book club for a while now and it finally looks like I've found one.

Can't wait to 'meet' some of you!

C. J. Sansom C. J. Sansom (no photo) is a terrific author, I too am a fan. You might want to look into a serious historian of that period: Tracy Borman, particularly her book Elizabeth’s Women Elizabeth's Women Friends, Rivals, and Foes Who Shaped the Virgin Queen by Tracy Borman by Tracy Borman (no photo). Enjoy the club!

Andrea

Greetings from Germany! My Name is Rebecca. I am an American expat living in Germany. I am interested in History because History allows us to use the past to solve pressening dilemenas that may arise in the present or future.

Perhaps, my love of history began as a child while watching the History Channel and PBS documentaries. I also believe my love for reading sparked an interst in historical children's books. One book in particular was Sybil Rosen's "Speed of Light". This book was instrumental in sparking my interest about the Holocaust and German Memory Studies.

Today, I hold a double Bachelors in History and Sociology, from the University of Suny Binghamton and a Master in History with a focus in German Modern History from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Currently , I speak as an indepent Presentor giving historical or sociological lectures at local German Endowments or Institutions that are open to the public.

I just finished reading James Hawes "The Shortest History of Germany"

I am specially interested in the identity building of a community.

Monica | 2 comments Hi there!
.
I'm Monica. I currently reside in Los Angeles, but I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Since we're in "stay-at-home" mode due to Coronavirus, I decided to take an online course called The Science of Being Happy. I took a strengths test, and one of my top strengths was "Love of Learning." So, I decided to join a non-fiction, history book club. I have always said I've wanted to join a book club, but have never actually followed through with it.

I absolutely love reading. My parents read to me every night while I was growing up, and it's stuck with me. I'm an actress, bartender, and acting teacher. I am really looking forward to being a part of this group!

If I could be directed on where to start and how I can reap all the benefits of this Book Club, that would be amazing.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Monica :)

My name is Jake, and I am a middle school social studies teacher from New Jersey. Currently I am about to finish A War Like No Other: How the Athenians & Spartans Fought the Peloponnesian War. I have certainly enjoyed this one. I recently finished reading Thucydides, and having a modern scholar sift through the information to provide their own argument was refreshing.
I am pleased to have found this group and look forward to future discussions with you all!

Welcome Sarah, from all of us at the History Book Club. We are happy that you have joined us from New York. Thank you for your interesting introduction.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following:

European History

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:
Becoming by Michelle Obama by Michelle Obama Michelle Obama

Laokannan | 4 comments Hi everyone, my name's Edward, i'm from an island in the Caribbean (Santo Domingo), been a lawyer for the last two decades, and I love history and reading about ancient times ( classical antiquity is my preferred period!) Ran into this group while browsing for something to do, and it instantly aroused my curiosity. I'm quite interested in sharing opinions about books, experiences, or else, whatever may be connected to history or culture in general.

Thanks a lot, Andrea!!....you like an epoch from which I know little, bar from what some books like Jekyll & Hyde or the portrait of Dorian Gray could grant me to perceive. I believe it was perhaps Britain's most glorified -and for many, also vilified- period, a rose-tinted time encompassing with the belle epoque in the rest of Europe. I like to read about the Britain of pre-Saxon times, the Celtic Britain, the Roman and sub-Roman Britain. Maybe you can recommend me a couple of books that can introduce me to the Victorian era in full fashion :)

Thanks, Vicki... I'll take my time to check the links you provide me with, and hope my posts can fulfill the required standards (I'm unfortunately so bad managing this social media interfaces, have no much patience, an absolute disgrace :)) hope I can be an added value to this group!!

May I recommend heartily all the novels of Charles Dickens (no photo)! You particularly might enjoy:
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens by Charles Dickens It’s partially autobiographical. It’s also been filmed several times, notably the version with Freddie Bartholomew and W. C. Fields. If you’re only interested in the history, there’s a small industry in biographies and histories concerning Queen Victoria. One that I read not too long ago was:
We Two Victoria and Albert Rulers, Partners, Rivals by Gillian Gill by Gillian Gill

Andrea

Aly Hi.
My name is Alice, but I usually go by Aly everywhere. I am 24 years old and from Paraguay.

History is like a hobby for me, it is something I enjoy learning about. I mostly read about WWII though, so I would like to expand my knowledge and make friends with whom I can talk to about that.

Looking forward to knowing what others are reading and discussing!
