Hello! Sure I can present myself :)
I'm actually from a farm in the middle of Norway which is centered at Nordmøre. It's not near a city as it is located up in the mountains. I only live there during holidays and when I visit my parents who are sheep farmers. Today I live in Trondheim, which is the third biggest city in Norway. I live there because of my studies and will probably live there until the farm becomes my property.

Tom that is fascinating and exactly why I ask where everybody is from because there is alway a tremendously wonderful historic gem just waiting to be shared.

I love to understand where approximately everyone is from - just not in terms of country but the approximate location (city, town, village) (of course for the sake of privacy) - we keep it approximate but there are so many great stories that get told in the process.

Brilliant post Tom - thank you.

William (soccershamu18) | 3 comments Hello all,

My name is Prince. I am originally from the country of Panamá but I currently live in the Panhandle of Florida. I have always enjoyed history since I was young but it isn't until just recently that I have developed a true passion for it. This passion was sparked a few years ago after visiting Africa, particularly Uganda. After my visit I realized that in the states we are taught very little about African culture before the slave trade and was fascinated when I learned about the historical links that trace back as far as the biblical era! I have since put in efforts to expand my knowledge of not only African history, but world history. I am eager to learn from this group and start a group read and discuss...something that I have not done since early 2000s during my college years.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Mark | 2 comments Hello all,

My name is Mark. I am from, and currently reside, in the Netherlands. I am 20 years old. Even as a young boy i often read history in my spare time. I mostly enjoyed Greek and Roman culture. This has not changed much. I do obviously enjoy more historical periods now, but my real passion is still for the Graeco-Roman world. Next year I will probably go to university where I will be studying law. I hope I can learn a lot from all of you and I would like to get to know you all.
Kind regards,
Mark

Andrea Engle | 2093 comments Welcome, William & Mark! Panama, and the Netherlands, how exciting! William, what do you think about the Panama Canal? It’s been a bone of contention for many years, while also being an engineering marvel. Mark, are you planning, perhaps, to become involved in the courts at The Hague, or is that too far in the future?
Regards,
Andrea

message 209: by Mark (new)

Mark | 2 comments Hello Andrea,

Because my education at the university has not started yet, it is probably too far in the future for me to see. I currently want to become a lawyer in Dutch law. But maybe I will discover a passion for European or international law on the way!
Regards,
Mark

message 210: by William (new)

William (soccershamu18) | 3 comments Hello Andrea,
Yes there has been much dispute especially when the canal became property of Panama in year 2000 due to the Carter-Torijos treaty. However, since the Panamanian military was abolished by George Bush Sr. after the capture of Noriega, the US is in charge of its protection. So there is much debate of whether the Canal is truly and fully Panamanian property. Very messy topic.

But the locks themselves are a marvel to see!

Andrea Engle | 2093 comments Mark & William, thank you both for your prompt responses. It’s always comforting, as well as informative, to learn from “natives.” I know how passionate I can become about Texas!

Linda Johnson | 1 comments I am a retired dentist on the west coast of Florida - just north of Clearwater. Sadly, I rushed through college and took little history or humanities in general; now I'm making up for it!

I love "The British are Coming" I can really get a sense of how people were thinking....George, smug and self-assured to his own detriment - Lord North - perceptive and realistic, but unwilling to assert his thinking to the King. I didn't realize how much British trade depended on the Americans. I see parallels with our situation with China now. I hope that this is in the right place...if not, let me know, I'm new to this website. Thanks!

Linda, welcome - one of my assisting moderators will be along soon to officially welcome you. Being that it is Mother's Day - give them a bit of time.

We are kicking off the discussion of The British are Coming today. Your arrival is timely. This is an introduction thread but we have set up the Weekly non spoiler threads and the Week One thread is open as well as the Glossary threads, Table of Contents and Syllabus threads and we are adding to the Bibliography thread - all of the primary sources used by Rick Atkinson for his research. You have to be careful to only post on the non spoiler thread anything dealing with pages vii through page 54 because that is the assignment for Week One. We also have spoiler threads like the Glossary threads where you can post anything about the book as a whole.

Here is the link to the folder for the spotlighted book and we always use our standard citation format for books and authors in order to successfully populate our group site.

Émilie Weidl (dynamicbooknerd) Hi everyone! I am a University student in Canada (I will be starting law school in the fall, which is now officially online). I have a degree in Political Science and a strong passion for history. My favourite topics include all things Tudor, the French Revolution, tsarist Russia, the USSR, and espionage history.

I'm planning to branch out into the history of other areas of the world (once I catch up on my 150+ non-fiction TBR). The next area I would love to explore (through non-fiction) would be Central Asia or the Caucasus--I took a seminar on Eurasian politics and security in the fall and just want more. After that, I plan to move further East.

Ellen Behrens Greetings from my home on wheels! My husband and I are full-time RVers here in the USA (currently in Montana, but that could change if we decide to roll on out of here). We started reading together at night, and have covered more topics than either of us would have tackled alone. Mostly we select books because they're tied in some way to our travels (we're currently reading "Indian Creek Chronicles" because we were just in Idaho). We especially love learning about some of the history of areas we spend time in (recently we finished a fantastic book about the Granite Mountain Mine Disaster in Butte, MT). And we always appreciate great books about our country's fascinating and brilliant founding fathers.

Lucky Stevens | 1 comments Greetings all,
My name is Lucky Stevens and I enjoy reading, writing and watching movies. I joined HBC because I love history, particularly aspects that deal with crime, pop trends and the experiences of the average man or woman--or even those on the fringes. I tend to lean toward historical fiction, as I find it is a way of immersing myself in a specific historical period while connecting with very human characters. Happy to be aboard.

Welcome to our group, Lucky! We have many different topics and books being discussed here so please feel free to explore and jump in.

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

Welcome, new members! You might want to check out our 50 BOOKS IN 2020 section. You can see what other folks have been reading and may find great suggestions there. Or you may want to participate. (You don't actually have to reach the goal of 50 books, but it's nice to have something to shoot for.)

Bill Greer | 243 comments Hello. I am a four-decades-long Brooklyn resident who enjoys exploring New York on foot and reading about it. My own direct involvement in its history began in the Dutch era through my work with the New Netherland Institute, where I was a trustee for eight years and chaired its program to establish the New Netherland Research Center with the New York State Library. My interest in history extends much farther in both time and geography. While I live in New York, I have traveled much of the world and explored the history of places I visited. So my interests go as far back as pre-Columbian America and cover the globe. – Bill Greer
