The History Book Club discussion
WELCOME AND MODERATOR'S CORNER
>
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF ~

My name is Jeff. I am relatively new to reading about history, but I find it very interesting. Since I have more free time now I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn more.
Welcome Jeff, we are happy that you have joined us in the History Book. Thank you for your interesting introduction. This is certainly the place to learn more about history. We look forward to your participation.
There are many folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well so please feel free to explore our many diverse threads. Here is a list of focus areas:
History Book Club's Focus Areas
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.
When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Welcome Yifei Sun,
Could you let us know where you are reading from - (approximate city and state) or (city, town, village and country) - we love to honor each member's location.
For privacy purposes, just the approximate location is fine. It is fun for us to know since we are a global community.

Welcome Bill Greer from Brooklyn, New York. A great place to live. one of my siblings lives in Brooklyn and loves it. Being close to Manhattan; but just far enough away to have more of a smaller community and neighborhood feel. Glad you are reading with us.

History:
The Mughal Empire, which arose in 1526 and had a distant genealogical link to the Mongol Empire, was the dominant force on the Indian subcontinent for more than two centuries.
The Red Fort, also known as Lal Qila, is often thought to represent the height of Mughal creativity and power.
It derives its name from its walls of red sandstone. At 33 meters (108 feet tall) and built starting in 1638 and finished 10 years later, the Red Fort's walls leave a memorable impression on you.
The structure is a fascinating blend of influences: Islamic, Persian, Timurid and Hindu traditions are all there.

Please introduce yourself here so we can welcome you. Tell us a little bit about yourself,..."
Thanks Bentley for a warm welcome and some interesting suggestions. Hello everyone! I'm a free-spirited person who is presently staying in Singapore pursuing my passion in Law! I've always had an interest in political ideologies and history but never really got time to read much on it. I joined this group in the hope that I can get a good idea about how should I start to go about studying world history in general. I would also appreciate if you could suggest some good reads on political ideologies in general too!
Looking forward to having some good discussions here :)
-SJ

I was an avid hater of history in high school and junior high school, and eventually found that it was likely due to having uninspiring teachers, I'm sad to say.
Eventually I found my way and became a history major in college, with the goal of becoming a history teacher at the jr/sr high school level so that I could inspire kids the same way I wasn't.
But a funny thing happened, and I became an English teacher in Japan instead. Best laid plans, and all that...
I really do enjoy all periods of history, but I tend to be a bit more partial to the American Revolution (my Boston roots showing through).
Thanks for having me, and reading this, and I hope we can all have some fun, thoughtful discussions about some interesting history books!

Regards,
Andrea

Welcome Matthew from Hiroshima, Japan (now that is one historic location).
Here at the History Book Club we like to celebrate the locations where everyone is reading from - like giving a shout out. That is why we ask for folks in their introduction to give the approximate city, state location if a domestic member and/or town, city, village and country if a global one. It is a lot of fun to see where all of our global members are from.

My name is Carol. I am from the State of Missouri in the United States. I am fascinated by world history in general and have a special interest in the Presidents of the United States. I am also very interested in genealogy and the history of my ancestors' places of origin. It is fascinating to look back at family history and study what was going on in the world when these people lived and how it shaped their lives. I look forward to the interesting reading and discussions in this group.

Regards,
Andrea
Hello Carol, one of our assisting moderators will be along shortly to formally welcome you with a few pointers so that you will be able to jump right in and enjoy your stay here in the group and find your way around. We welcome you from the great state of Missouri.
We love to highlight where all of our members are reading from so would you like to tell us (just approximately due to privacy of course) what city or town you are near in Missouri.
We are a global community so it is great fun for all of our members around the globe. Also we have some wonderful books that we have covered on our presidents and those discussions are still in our Presidential Series folder at the back.
Coming up we will be having a discussion on James Madison and we are currently discussing George Washington in our spotlighted read of the book The British are Coming which highlights when Washington was Commander in Chief of the Continental Army.
We will also be having a discussion on Hoover very soon too. Our Presidential Series folder will be of great interest to you as well.
I, too, love genealogy and have created the family tree which is an important part of my love for history. We look forward to reading your posts.

My name is Ken, and I’ve been interested in history since at least high school. I had a wonderful history teacher who was a survivor of the Auschwitz death camp, and since then the study of history has been a life-long passion. I’m 62, and have led a fairly diverse life. It includes studying classical violin up to the conservatory level, receiving a bachelor’s degree in math and computer science, then working as a computer programmer for over 10 years. I left computer programming to become a public school music teacher, which I did for another 10 years. While still a music teacher, I began teaching SAT mathematics during the summer, and eventually gave up teaching music to teach math in public and charter schools, which I have been doing for the last 10 years. I truly enjoy intelligent discourse, especially with those whose opinions may be different from my own. I’m looking forward to being part of this group!

I have been always interested in history, especially Japanese history. I have read so many historical fictions in Japanese. I have not been comfortable to read at the same level in English for so long, but a few years ago when my daughter who does not like reading begged me to read a book that she really liked, I was like OK, then, I should be able to read young adult genre. That got me started.
I enjoy reading several genres, but now I am on for world history. I did not know where to start, so I found this group and searched for King Arthur and Alexander the Great. I am now reading "The winter king: A novel of Arthur" by Bernard Cornwell. After finishing the chronicles, I will read "Fire from Heaven" by Mary Renault.

I would like your recommendation for historically accurate good fictions for Vikings, Gilgamesh, and any thread in this group about Great Britain history/king & knights. I am open for anything.
Thank you.

Approximate city/state is fine.

Welcome to the group, Lauren! I have been on here for years and had great conversations about so many books and topics in history and beyond. I too enjoy reading about the American Civil War and the World Wars as well as the North American Revolution, and in recent years my interest has broadened into many other history topics too.
In addition to the featured books and various other reading campaigns going on, there are focus areas for discussing topics like the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, and many other subjects.
You can check out the Main Page to see a lot of what is happening right now.

Welcome Sue - I have been to Cape Breton at least four times and loved it. According to my grandmother and my genealogy interests - my grandmother's mother and family came from Cape Breton. I have stayed there many times - at the Keltic Lodge on the tip and also at the Normaway Inn (the Fiddler Concerts were amazing) - and the food at both the Normaway and at the Keltic were superb. I never knew until after my grandmother had long passed that when I visited Ingonish that some of the family had actually lived there. A real coincidence. You must love it there. Also I have ancestors in Wales, England and Scotland too. Glad you have found your way to my favorite group
