Hello Adelle - an assisting moderator will be along but I wanted to say welcome back. Your thoughtful posts are remembered and we are sincerely glad to have you with us again.

I wanted to say hello again myself.

Regards,
Bentley

Jan Hi, Adelle, welcome! I also live near Denver.

message 403: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello all, and thank you, Bentley and Jan, for the warm welcome.

I'm originally from North Dakota, but have long lived just outside of Denver, Colorado. In both locations, I've enthusiastically read history.

I've been absent from the group for 2-3 years due to health issues, but I"m venturing back in with the James Madison read. :-)

Adelle, glad you are back in the group and back on this thread.

Delighted to have you join the Madison read. There actually will be two. One for folks when we missed the Ketchum read and another for the Feldman book which is more current and readily available for our members.

I never knew that you were originally from North Dakota and now live in Denver.

Sorry about what you must have gone through in the past (glad that is behind you); but we are sure glad to be able to contribute to your enjoyment in reading moving forward.

Welcome back to the group, Adelle! We have many different topics and books being discussed here, so take your time to re-familiarize yourself with the place.

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Ghost on the Throne The Death of Alexander the Great and the War for Crown and Empire by James Romm by James Romm (no photo)

Take a few moments to read the orientation:

Tim | 52 comments Hello, all. Tim from Seattle here. Looks like a neat community. I've gotten hooked on history books, lately focusing on American history post WWII. I'm interested in making this more interactive, talking to people who have read the same books, getting some new book recommendations, maybe joining some book club discussions. Thanks to the moderators and volunteers for setting this up.

My name is Elsa I was born in Mexico, in a small town in the state of Chihuahua. Moved to the US when I was 5. Met my husband at the age of 16 and we married when I turned 18 in 1990. Have two children all grown with kids of their own. I joined because I wanted to start reading books with more substance than what I have been reading lately. My interest of course is getting to read history about Mexico, but I will pick up and read any good book that is being discussed.

I’m probably reading more history than any other genre at the moment.

Hello, fellow history lovers. I've recently joined goodreads and am delighted to have found your group.

My name is Beau and I live with my partner in Devon, England.

My parents and grandparents introduced me to history from an early age, and this is the one academic subject that I've kept an interest in throughout my adult life. After all, history isn't just a fascinating subject in its own right, it also helps us better understand the world we live in today and how that world may develop in the future.

Favourite periods? That's a tough one but I'd probably go with either ancient history (Egyptian, Greek, Roman empires, etc) or the Napoleonic era.

My interest in the latter started thanks to a series of historical fiction novels (Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series) and I've gone on to read some fabulous factual books about it too. Three of my favourites are listed below:

The War of Wars: The Great European Conflict 1793 - 1815
Moscow 1812: Napoleon's Fatal March
The Battle: A New History of Waterloo

1812, in particular, is a classic. What Napoleon's army went through on the retreat from Moscow, was quite extraordinary. I was spellbound reading about it.

Away from this period, a couple of months ago, I completed what is probably my biggest undertaking as a reader:

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

It might've been an abridged version but it was still pretty epic. Due to the extraordinary quality of the writing, the knowledge I gained from reading it and the book's length, I felt a strange mixture of sadness and relief when I finished it.

Anyway, I look forward to learning more about different periods of history through this group, and to speaking to some of you too.

Welcome Jeff, we are happy that you have joined us in the History Book Club from San Francisco. Thank you for your introduction and sharing your interests in history.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following focus areas:

American Civil War

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:

The British Are Coming The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777 by Rick Atkinson by Rick Atkinson Rick Atkinson

Renee (multitaskingmom) | 1 comments Hello! My name is Renée. I live in Galveston, Texas. I love reading period. I would have to say that my favorite genres of books are sci-fi and dystopian futures. I love history as well. I recently finished a book about my own dear city and was amazed at the history that it has and how it is not taught, even in mention, in our Texas history classes. I then finished Stamped and was moved beyond expression. It is rare that a book can change your perspective in a profound way and Stamped did that for me. I found the HBC looking for a Stamped discussion and decided to join this reading of it with others. Very excited to read it again. Thank you for having me.

My name is Xania and I come from Luxembourg in Europe. (between France, Germany and Belgium) I like to read books about history but I don’t do it often enough because it is more easy to read just for entertainment.
I am looking forward to recommendations on new books to read.

Hi Renée! Glad you are here! I look forward to seeing you in the Stamped discussion soon. I am really enjoying the book so far. There is so much to think about in this history that is often still very relevant today. It is a free read, so jump in at any time about anything you are thinking about, even if you are earlier or later in the book than I am in posting the summaries and discussion questions.

I am in my sixties and have been a psychiatric nurse practitioner for 6 years. Before that I practiced law for 25 years. I have always loved reading about history and I'm particularly interested in books about the period that leads up to a war e.g. The Guns of August.
