Andrew Hudson | 82 comments Hello, Punks...

We don't have an "official" bookshelf for the group yet, so I'd like to get your opinions on the classic examples of ~punk fiction.

I'm going to add some easy options right now, but let me know what you consider the best of the best, in any of the ~punk sub-categories.

On my profile, I have a list of books I've classified as Steampunk (or similar genres). Should I post a list of those here or what should I do?

message 3: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Hudson | 82 comments No an exhaustive list, but which ones are the cream of your crop?

I'd be particularly interested to hear suggestions for the even-more niche genres that I've listed here - Biopunk, Nanopunk, the various "notpunks", etc...

message 4: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Yes elf please! I'm so ignorant of the genre and i have maybe read three or four punk books ( I do know that steampunk is what i prefer) and I just want more so help a brother out!

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

A lot of them I have yet to read, but I can tell they're punk from the descriptions. I've personally been more into the historical stuff as I've only recently decided that Urban Fantasy is not something to fear.

message 6: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Oh yeah the older the setting the better! Maybe I should read some rock punk lol ok so what book would you recommend?

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, there's Cold Magic by Kate Elliot. It has its own entire alternate history. It's not an entirely traditional Steampunk setting, but it's still interesting.

There's also The Unnaturalists by Tiffany Trent. It's kind of a more futuristic punk novel, but it's been too long since I last read it to fully remember which one it was.

Those would be the more interesting ones that I have read. I still need to read most of the ones on my list. I got my mother a couple alternate history books for her birthday, but I have no clue if they're any good.

message 8: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments I'll try them thank you!!!

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

You're welcome!

message 10: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments I'm gonna be headed to the bookstore in the next day or so and I'm picking up leviathan any comments on that series??

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't actually read it, to be honest.

message 12: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments What about you Andrew? What do you think of it? Or anyone in the group

message 13: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments I picked up six-gun tarot instead lol

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Cool then.

message 15: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Hudson | 82 comments I've not read Leviathan myself. I've peeped into Six-Gun Tarot on Amazon though, and it looks okay at first glance.

message 16: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments It's good so far. This book opens up and hits the ground running

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

That's cool. What's it about?

message 18: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Well it starts off with a boy about to die in the desert with his horse promise. Then he meets a coyote who is the deputy of a town and it has this man hating assassin chick. The sheriff is awesome and can't die. Also this book puts it's own spin on how God created earth and that was pretty neat'o

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Cool!

Charles Cornell (charlesacornell) | 7 comments I've added two Dieselpunk novels by Bard Constantine. I highly recommend his fiction. For those of us who are authors, Bard's mastery of retrofuturism is near perfection and his imagery is terrific.

Here are my reviews:

message 21: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Thanks Charles I'll check him out.

message 22: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Hudson | 82 comments Thanks for that, Charles. There's also a dedicated Dieselpunk thread here - fancy posting the links there as well? That way someone looking for Dieselpunk in particular is going to come right to them.

message 23: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Zama (jazzfeathers) | 61 comments I'm reading BArd's books too and really enjoying them. So far, he's the author I personally prefer :-)

message 24: by Celine (new)

Celine Jeanjean Andrew wrote: "I'm gonna be headed to the bookstore in the next day or so and I'm picking up leviathan any comments on that series??"

I read the first book and loved it. I thought the world was fantastic, and the alternate world setting really clever and well thought out. It's a really fun and easy read, I read through it in a day and a half. The characters felt quite young though, almost more MG than YA. Didn't bother me though.

I got my copy on the kindle and I wished I'd bought a physical copy, the illustrations inside looked really nice but the kindle probably didn't do them justice.

Let me know what you think Andrew once you've read it!

message 25: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Thanks Celine! But it's going to be a while before I get to it now lol

message 26: by Celine (new)

Celine Jeanjean Yeah I saw that you went for Six-Gun Tarot in the end. I was a little slow on the uptake, or a little fast on the reply button! ;)

What's Six-Gun Tarot like? Worth a read?

message 27: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Haha let's go with fast on the draw! Yeah it's really good! I was suffering through Stephen kings it and a John Grisham book before this and was dying for a story to spark the old imagination machine. Six-gun tarot does this for me. It has everything it promised plus a good twist near the end! It opens up fast paced then slows down for a bit but it builds into something pretty great

message 28: by Celine (new)

Celine Jeanjean Have to say I loved IT, until the end bit when they're fighting the spider. I found that a bit long, but otherwise I read it pretty quickly, despite the doorstop size.

I might have to check out Six-Gun Tarot then. I have to say the title and cover are intriguing!

message 29: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Yeah it was great until the end but aren't all of his books like that lol please do read it I wouldn't mind talking about it when it's done. I'm trying to take my time with it though

message 30: by Celine (new)

Celine Jeanjean Cool, will let you know when I get around to it, need to finish my current book first (Tale of Two Cities)

message 31: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Who is the author?

message 32: by Celine (new)

Celine Jeanjean Dickens. I do love his books although they take me a little more time than modern stuff

message 33: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments I thought that was the one lol that's the great thing about e-books old stuff is free lol

message 34: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Does anyone else not like to Finnish books sometimes so they can make up there own ending?

message 35: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Hudson | 82 comments Reading a book to the end and then not getting to finish it? That strikes me as the fate I'll suffer forever in hell...

message 36: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments It depends on the book I suppose. Iv only ever done it with Stephen king books. I love his books there a great read through the whole thing but I hate his endings so I Finnish them for myself now so I can keep my love for my hero lol

message 37: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments There hasn't been much activity from you guys lately!!!

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

I've noticed.

message 39: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Elf! My good friend!! How are you?

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm alright, and you?

message 41: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Good. neck deep in the merkabah rider series new favorite book. What are you reading lately?

message 42: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Andrew what are you writing right now?

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Cool. Reading? Not much. . . school and roleplay are kind of what I've been doing with most of my time. Had to read One Amazing Thing and A Modest Proposal for English.

message 44: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Oh :/ I can't remember the last time I wasn't reading something lol my girlfriend jokes that I'm gonna read us out of house and home lol

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh. . .I have a bunch of books myself. Actually, I'm looking into figuring out if there's a way I could get a third full-sized bookcase. I just haven't been reading as much lately.

message 46: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Is there a steam punk musketeers novel?

message 47: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Hudson | 82 comments There isn't one I know of, but I'm hardly an expert on the field!

message 48: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Oh I thought you were the leading expert lol

message 49: by Andrew (last edited Jan 14, 2015 02:02PM) (new)

Andrew Hudson | 82 comments Nope, just a passing enthusiast, me.

A quick googling tells me that the 2011 movie of T3M was a steampunky reimagining of the story, but I've not seen it (Paul W. S. Anderson's not my favourite director really; I quite liked Event Horizon and his first film Shopping wasn't terrible for what it was, but everything else makes my knuckles ache).

I know you've mentioned this before, but I have the weirdest feeling someone else has raised this notion to me too. It could be that this is an idea whose time has come!

message 50: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Jewell | 39 comments Andrew we should collaborate on such a story!
