Water. We begin life in water, we are made up mostly of water, we play and exercise and refresh ourselves in water. The protagonist in award-winning Irish author John Boyne's new novel is both drawn to it and repelled by it. I'm biased - I always love his work. 😊

Kid Christmas: Of The Claus Brothers Toy Shop
is David Litchfield's colourful interpretation of a Santa Claus /Saint Nicolas origin story. Beautifully done. I think kids will love it.

I just enjoyed The Mystery Writer by one of my favourite authors, Aussie Sulari Gentill. This one has a couple of Aussie characters in the US, caught up in murder, conspiracies and preppers. Good stuff!

That's Aussie writer Robert Skinner, and he's put his stories together in I'd Rather Not: Essays. Best enjoyed separately, like letters from a friend.

Christmas in Chamonix by Sasha Wagstaff
Fans have been waiting a while to see what author Graham Brack's Captain Josef Slonský has been up to, and I was glad to seem him back in (limping) action in Prague, solving the case of The Murdered Molls. Crime and humour - great mix.

In Shades of Death: Murder at the Court of Elizabeth I, historian Angela Ranson presents Catrin, an appealing, independent young heroine whom the Queen sends to investigate death threats. Great read for historical mystery lovers.

Baumgartner is a man widowed too young who wonders if he has a future. Acclaimed American author Paul Auster gives us Baumgartner's sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, always realistic musings. Excellent.

The winner of this year's Booker Prize for fiction is Irish author Paul Lynch's disturbing novel, Prophet Song. He shows us what happens if we ignore the centuries of songs/warnings about tyranny and oppression. Worthy winner.

There is no way I'll attempt these, but I hope some of you will learn to Crochet Your Own Dog: 14 Lifesize Amigurumi Pups to Make & Love!. Author Mieko Shindo has wonderful photos and detailed, illustrated instructions. So cute!

Her Dark Wings by Melinda Salisbury
I did like this spin on the tale of Persephone, and I could relate to how Corey felt over Bree's betrayal, but it was flat storytelling.

The Spy Coast, by Tess Gerritsen, is a new ensemble piece about five spies who have tried to retire quietly to a small town but discover it's not that easy. The author was inspired by real life circumstances near her, which made it even more interesting to me.

was a lot better than the first. The first one I skimmed, this one I read. If you like cozy and the TV show 'Bones', ('cause that MC is who this MC reminds me of) you might like this series.

by Amanda Churchill and ILOVED it. A story about memories, lost love and what we endure for our children.
Coming out in March for Kylie Minogue fans is another addition to the Little People BIG DREAMS series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. The popular 'Neighbours' actress became a singing superstar with chart-topping albums five decades in a row.

I think most readers here know what it means to fall under The Spell of a Story. Author/illustrator Mariajo Ilustrajo has written a very cute book about a girl who says she hates books.
