This best-selling Norton Critical Edition is based on the 1847 first edition of the novel. For the Fourth Edition, the editor has collated the 1847 text with several modern editions and has corrected a number of variants, including accidentals. The text is accompanied by entirely new explanatory annotations.

New to the fourth Edition are twelve of Emily Bronte's letters regarding the publication of the 1847 edition of Wuthering Heights as well as the evolution of the 1850 edition, prose and poetry selections by the author, four reviews of the novel, and poetry selections by the author, four reviews of the novel, and Edward Chitham's insightful and informative chronology of the creative process behind the beloved work.

Five major critical interpretations of Wuthering Heights are included, three of them new to the Fourth Edition. A Stuart Daley considers the importance of chronology in the novel. J. Hillis Miller examines Wuthering Heights's problems of genre and critical reputation. Sandra M. Gilbert assesses the role of Victorian Christianity plays in the novel, while Martha Nussbaum traces the novel's romanticism. Finally, Lin Haire-Sargeant scrutinizes the role of Heathcliff in film adaptations of Wuthering Heights.

Had that problem with some Austen books but for the most part classics are not usual tough for me to get through. Chap 1-4 (view spoiler)[ phew this is gonna take some time to get through lol Shakespeare seems to be easier to follow than this for me. So far i am quite confused. Heathcliff doesnt seem to be very happy and doesnt care for his daughter-in-law? But who is this person who went to visit? (hide spoiler)]

Chap 1-6
(view spoiler)[Yeah, there's a lot of nieces and nephews and stuff with very little clear explanation of the relations between them. I think the housekeeper's story is helping a lot though - I definitely find her easier to follow than Lockwood, and she's also less of an idiot. (hide spoiler)]

Chap 4-14 (view spoiler)[ okay i think i am starting to understand whats happening. So Catherine is married to Edgar but is in love with Heathcliff. Her sister in law, Isabella, wants Heathcliff. Just in spite Heathcliff marries Isabella because he is also in love with Catherine. When Edgar separates them, Catherine begins to go 'crazy' so to speak and falls ill. (hide spoiler)]

Chap 7-12

(view spoiler)[I can't tell if I think Heathcliffe is hot in a bad boy kinda way, or if he's just an asshole. Either way, I'm not a fan of him running off with Isabella. Wish she had gotten a little more characterization before that happened. Also, this book is a lot more violent than I expected. Idk why it was categorized with Austen novels in my head, but I was expecting gentle courtship and instead I'm getting a lot of madness, insanity, and abuse. Really engrossing though, I'm enjoying it. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 15-23 (view spoiler)[ okay why did they have to name the kids the same name as the parent lol and now the kids, who are cousins are now in love too? Both Catherine and Isabella died and the men are left to raise the kids. Im not liking this book (hide spoiler)]

Vol 2, chap 1-7

(view spoiler)[Ok so Heathcliff is basically just evil. Lowkey, I'm obsessed with him. I haven't read a book villain this good in a while. I agree with you about the names though, Erica. The family tree is a circle and all the names are the same (especially since Linton is a first and last name) so it does get a little confusing. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Why did Lockwood need to be in this book? He felt like a really annoying framing device when all I really wanted to hear about was Nelly's story. I feel like his whole plotline could have been left out and the book would still be just as good (hide spoiler)]
