Yeah, but it is! Though not all books with sex in it is porn!

message 804: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale True. "All porn is erotica but not all erotica is porn."

message 805: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) | 179 comments I'm not much on SciFi or the dystopian genre.

Crime Addict Sifat (iambooknerd) Chic lit

message 807: by Crime Addict (new)

Crime Addict Sifat (iambooknerd) I don't like Fantasy, vampire, Chic lit books

message 808: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan I would suggest that the essence of 'erotic' is that which creates an intense anticipation of sex. At some point, the erotic story needs to deliver with the promised event.

Porn - just eradicates anticipation and goes straight to the climax... (pun intended...)

Interestingly enough, the architecture of terror/suspense and horror mimic the above dynamic.

A really good terrifying, suspenseful horror story will create an intense anticipation of horror (i.e. terror = anticipation) and must at some point deliver on the terrifying anticipation and deliver the actual horror...

message 809: by Jim (new)

Jim | 1525 comments I don't generally read Chick Lit or YA. Sci Fi and Fantasy are not favorites but there are exceptions

Interesting point. Never thought of it that way before.

Jim, I won't read any YA where the ladies act like doormats.*cough* Twatlight*cough* Or there's a dystopian government *cough* Hunger Games*cough*. Nor will I read anything written by Regency era women.*cough*Pride and Prejudice*cough.

That last one said, I won't even read it if someone else, male or otherwise, rewrites the story by adding zombies to it.**Technicolor yawn*Pride and Prejudice and Zombies*Technicolor yawn* Though the trailer WAS rather cool looking, I still haven't seen the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foGra...

i did see that. It was pretty good for a visual mixup of a period piece/action thrill ride. Not saying it is an award nominee, but it entertained. I enjoy other escapes. We all need different things. If it was all homogenous, then the discussions would be uninteresting. I will watch simple vampire romance. Then I will read dark bdsm. The truest readers pallette is built with a mixture of different ingredients. Stir it up and I want a taste. I love reading and watching. It is all mental voyeurism.

message 812: by Holly (new)

Holly B ( slowly catching up) I don't read horror, gory serial killer, or witchcraft.

message 813: by Ray (new)

Ray | 941 comments I haven't really read much in scyfi. The reconstruction of the environment and having to establish all of that to get into the story puts me off. But never say never.

message 814: by Amber (last edited May 01, 2017 09:53AM) (new)

Amber Martingale Stay away from Jean M. Auel's scifi set in Ice Age Europe, then, Ray. Too damned much info dump from book to book as well as within books.

We only need ONE fucking description of Neanderthals, woolly mammoths, loess soil creation, glaciers and or all of the above ONCE PER DAMNED BOOK, not a dozen or so times in each of the six books of the freaking series!

Yes, I mentioned Neanderthals because her debut novel was the one the awful movie version of The Clan of the Cave Bear was based on. Clan was one of the three movies that caused the creation of the PG-13 movie rating. What were the other two? Gremlins and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkJ4k...

Rich | 164 comments Fantasy, romance, zombie, western, chic flics. weird sci-fi. I only say that because I loved the Martian.

message 819: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Malmquist | 160 comments Will never read true crime. Or really gory books, zombies.

message 820: by R.M. (new)

R.M. | 2 comments Not really a fan of pure romance novels. But if it isn't the primary focus of the story and only serves as a background then that's good enough in my book (no pun intended).

message 821: by Amber (last edited May 02, 2017 10:27AM) (new)

Amber Martingale I usually do disguise, Janet.

Rich, you've just said that you won't read 3/4 of the world's most popular genres. What's left?

Rich ??

Not sure on that one...

Genre you do not like !!!

Thriller, Suspense and mystery ???

Spirit-Soul-Body (dreamsage) | 17 comments for me....no genre is "genre-is-to-not-read" only straight avoid gay/lesbo but read recommended erotica.

also currently less preference to nonfiction/contemporary ..that do on recommend/reference currently.

I even try to read technical datasheets for packaged food or grocery ..which I buy or not.

don't see news on television but through email alerts or newsletters..so I read selective news.

no, genre kill..in my reading

Amber Martingale It happens, Sean.

message 830: by Rich (new)

Rich | 164 comments I just finished anatomy of cheating. I felt It might be a iffy read but decided to try it and see what happens. The novel was very uneven and at times felt lie a dynasty episode. I enjoy twist and turns in a novel but when there are two many it really hurts the story plus the character being over the top at times. 2 stars

message 831: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 4 comments As a rule I'm not fond of romance, sci-fi, or paranormal
But will even read those on occasion.

message 832: by Rich (new)

Rich | 164 comments reading a very dar intense debut thriller Gavin. This novel is not for children. I lie it so far very ell written detective and a very realistic dar murderer ---intense in feeling 7 or silence of the lambs but a different story. Very well written dialogue.

message 833: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Wrong thread, Rich. It happens.

David Freas (quillracer) | 557 comments Another group of books I avoid are those 'Must Read' ones everyone is ga-ga over. My experience has been that if the world loves a book, I'm going to want to slit my wrists. when I try to read it.

Some of the very best books I've read have been hidden little novels that hardly have any readers, Dave. A lot of the must reads are not for me either.

message 838: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Anybody gonna read this one? I think it's a stupid premise. http://www.businessinsider.com/kfc-ro...

message 839: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Will it be included with a free bucket? Will it be the moron in the commercials? (I hate the new commercials.)

I'm surprised he can hold that woman considering all the grease on his fingers.

This could be an interesting new trend. The King from Burger King, the red-headed gal from Wendy's, Ronald McDonald, "Jack" (but he's already married), etc.

message 840: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Hardcover copies to Facebook followers, Kirsten.

message 841: by Kirsten (new)

The 'new' Colonel Sanders looks and sounds like he'd lurk in a dark alley trying to lure little girls to join him by offering a free drumstick.

And the Burger King King is just flat-out scary.

Yes! I thought I was the only one who thought that Burger King dude was scary. Some of the commercials also seem like a dramatization of a home invasion by a sexual predator...

message 845: by Amber (new)

message 846: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Neve (jamien_author) | 3 comments Just about any book recommended on a BBC radio show eg Simon Mayo's Book Club.

message 847: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale What's wrong with those recommendations?

message 848: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Neve (jamien_author) | 3 comments Every book is considered a wonderful piece of literature, there is never any serious review. Listeners who review the book never criticise the book and the interviewer never questions any aspect of the books.
