Katie | 3379 comments Hello! I'm kind of new here, and I'm loving it so far! Can you help me understand the buddy read discussion thing a little more? For the month of April, I just used the list that showed all the planned buddy reads for the month...it was easy for me to find them that way. But with the next two I'm planning on buddy reading, someone sent me a link that was already created, but didn't have the stars that showed it was reset, and it wasn't on the month list where I easily found the book this last month.

I hope my question makes sense! And thanks in advance!

Example:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I read that you can check under the discussion tab on any book and try to find something that says YA Readers, but with those examples above, will those not be listed on the month layout with all the other buddy reads? I'm just trying to figure out what's the best way to not lose the threads so I don't miss out on any great buddy reads :)

Hi Katie, the thread for The Mortal Instruments Series is fine as it's a series thread, so as long as you're reading the same book at roughly the same time as your buddy, and there isn't more than a 14 day gap between comments, then that one will count ☺

The second thread that you linked does need resetting, so either you or one of your buddies would need to post on the planned buddy reads thread for the month you want to start, and ask for the thread to be reset. Or you can let me know here which date you want to start and I'll reset it for you ☺

Basically every buddy read that happens in the group should be listed on the planned buddy reads thread for the month it starts, although I am pretty bad at remembering to put the GBRs on there ;)

Katie | 3379 comments This helps so much! Thanks ladies!! I’ll ask to reset six of crows in the other forum so I can practice doing that correctly :) Thanks so much, and thanks for all your work with this! I’m loving it! It helps me focus on my to be read list when I have challenges that help get points instead of just looking at my shelf wondering where to start! Thanks again for the answers!

no problem ☺

message 706: by Katie (new)

Katie | 3379 comments Just in case I didn't ask in the correct spot before, can I post this here too?

Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo for May 12th (unless it doesn't need to be reset since it's a series?) And I'm super sorry if this isn't the correct link...But thank you so much in advance!

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments Are you wanting to read the series Katie? Cause that link is the wrong one for the series then. I don't know if there is a series thread for Six of Crows.

message 708: by Katie (new)

Katie | 3379 comments There are a few of us trying to buddy read Book 1 of Six of Crows for the month of May, (May 12th) but I'm not sure how to attach a link to the request... (still learning) HA! Thanks!

can i reqst for a series thread ???

message 712: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
Hi Shan, you can request a series thread, but you will only be able to claim bonus points for the buddy read for those books which you're reading with a buddy. If you're both reading books 2 and 3, you can claim buddy read points for those, but if one of you wants to read book 1, or book 5 for example, then those wouldn't count. Hope that helps ☺

message 713: by Katie (new)

Katie | 3379 comments Hello-

I can't believe this might happen, but I'm about to DNF my 2nd book of this month!! YIKES! (Maybe I need a break away from YA Fantasy for a while) I tried "Reaper at the Gates" at the beginning of the month, and I just can't get into "Six of Crows" right now. I've tried so hard...

My question is this...I really want to come back to both of these books and try buddy reading them again sometime in the near future. But will I be able to do that for monthly challenges and bonus points since I've technically started them before (and even marked them as finished to get them off my currently reading list, but marked them as DNF)? I will definitely need to restart these two books when I decide to re-read them because I can't even get into them right now, so I would read the whole book during a new month, but how does that work? Just curious...

Thanks so much!!

message 714: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
Hi Katie, if you haven't finished a book, then you can still use it for points in the challenges as long as you do two things, first, just restart the book from the beginning when you start reading it again, don't carry on from where you got up to, and second, let us know when you post your review that it isn't a re-read, it's a DNF that you've started again from the beginning, and then we'll count it for you without having to ask ☺

message 715: by Fany (new)

Fany | 136 comments Hi!
I wanted to ask whether if I want to BR a book that is part of a series (and I found a buddy) I need to request a thread for this book specifically or use the series thread?
And when do I request, in both cases?

message 716: by Anna 'Bookbuyer' (last edited Jun 03, 2019 04:38AM) (new)

Anna 'Bookbuyer' (bookbuyer) | 22764 comments It depends. If for instance you are reading just Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2) by J.K. Rowling and no other book in the series. You can ask for an individual thread.

If you are planning to read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2) by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter, #3) by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter, #4) by J.K. Rowling then I would use the series thread. Just state which book you are starting from. :)

Uh usually it's best to give the mod a day or two notice as there is only really Sarah right now. So she is really busy. If you have to read it the same day you might just need to start without it being reset first.

If you are talking about a book you are reading in a few months then I would wait to request it till the monthly reading thread is open for that month.

message 717: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
Hi Fany, usually if you're reading just one book from a series, then we'd use a thread that is just for that one book, although occasionally we do use the series thread, especially if there isn't a thread already made for that book.

As for when to request it, it's best to request it as early as possible, as long as the thread for the month you'll be doing the buddy read in is open. You can find the planned threads where you can request buddy reading threads here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

We try to reset threads as quickly as possible, but we do sometimes get delayed at times, so if you need to post the thread reset breaker so you can start using the thread, I've been posting it on message 7 of the planned thread so it's easy for you to find it if you need to ☺

message 726: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 17 comments I just looked at your reads for this month. Whew! I feel overwhelmed. New here. Can someone help me find a book I'll like? I just finished the Constellation Series by Claudia Gray. Defy the Stars That's the link for the first one. I have been interested in sci fi and fantasy. I like the writing to not be too much about the typical stuff I see often. Sword and sorcerer medieval-ish. Getting bored with that. I want something fresh and interesting. Stories that are taking place in the current day world or near future are good. A world that is easy to understand and doesn't have a lot of difficult names in it. I need something I can get in audio book because I have trouble with my eyes.

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
Hi Joanne, I'm not really sure what to recommend, it's been a long time since I read Defy the Stars, and I really can't remember what it was like. It might be worth posting on our 'request a read' thread here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... to see if anybody else has any recommendations, or this folder here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... has threads with recommendations that people have made by genre ☺

Katie | 3379 comments Hi Sarah-

I didn't know where to ask this, so I'll put it here. I'm doing a book study with my son this month, and we are reading Illuminae, but I read that in January.

Can I could that for this month, or is that too soon for a reread? No worries if it doesn't count...I'm planning on reading it anyway :) I'm just asking since we're short on books with I's this month! HA!

Thanks!

message 734: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
Hi Katie, we recently changed our rules so that it only has to be 8 months for re-reads to count, so as long as you read it before February 4th 2019, it will count ☺

message 738: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Hi Joanne, I think you might be having a problem because you're trying to comment on a closed thread. The only thread I can see for The Maze Runner is the series thread here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
We're not going to be using series threads any more, and so all old threads have been closed. As this one hasn't been commented on since October 4th, the thread was closed yesterday as it was more than 14 days since it had been commented on, and thus deemed inactive.
I'm afraid you would have to find a new buddy now, so it would probably be best to comment on either the regular wanted thread, or the wanted thread for series here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
xx

message 739: by Krystal (new)

Krystal Ayers | 5691 comments I have a question. Or suggestion. I don't want to sound insensitive or anything, but do we have a rule about during buddy reads, not posting all the updates in one post? It just makes it hard to respond to. I totally get reading the book all in one setting, but putting all the updates in one post...

message 740: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn | 1882 comments @Krystal
I completely agree! I think there was a new rule that says you can't do that unless no one else has started. If that's the case I think the new rule says they won't earn points

message 741: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
Hello ☺ We do have a rule about that which we will be enforcing strictly from January 2020. Anyone who dumps updates and runs without ever attempting to discuss the book will not be given the buddy read points. You can find out more on the announcements thread here ☺ - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 742: by Krystal (new)

Krystal Ayers | 5691 comments Ah, okay! I was also mentioning making the multiple updates in one post, instead of doing separate posts. It makes it a lot harder to respond to when you have, for example.

Chapter 1 spoiler
CHapter 9 spoiler
Chapter 17 spoiler
Chapter 88 Spoiler
Done spoiler.

All in the same post.. It's a lot easier to reply when they are in separate posts.

message 743: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
It does make it harder, and you then have to keep returning to that same post to read comments later on in the book.
We have always preferred posts be separate, both on buddy read threads, and when posting reviews on review threads, but it hasn't been enforced because we have so much other stuff to enforce x

message 744: by Krystal (new)

Krystal Ayers | 5691 comments No worries, totally understand. But yes, definitely harder.

message 745: by Lu (new)

Lu | 202 comments Hi, I’m new to goodreads and I wanted to start joining challenges but I don’t usually read books in english so I had a few questions about how that would work out. Like I know there are challenges were you have to complete a word with letters from the title of the books you read so for me only the English title would count right? Even if I’m not reading in English. And about the different editions, we have to put the one we are reading but if I don’t find it do I put one with the closest number of pages?

message 746: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
Hi Luisa, I'm not sure which language you're reading in, but if the title has accents above letters, like Kissatyttö we would still count that as English letters because it's obvious that the 'ö' is basically an 'O', it is mainly titles which are in Arabic or Chinese that wouldn't work such as هاري بوتر وسجين أزكابان.
It depends on the challenge as to which titles you can actually use though.

For page counts you can post the edition with the highest number of pages, although there are some exceptions to this rule, which can be found under number 7. of our general rules here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

You might find some other answers to your questions in our Important Info folder here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... where you'll find hints about challenges and general rules ☺

message 747: by Lu (new)

Lu | 202 comments Hi, so I actually read in Portuguese or Spanish which still has our alphabet, the thing I wanted to know it’s because the title changes a lot. Like “Me before You” becomes “Como eu era antes de você” so I got a little confused as to what title would count.
I actually already read those threads but thank you for pointing them out.

message 748: by Sarah Elizabeth (new)

Sarah Elizabeth (bookworm_sarah) | 90931 comments Mod
It depends on the challenge to be honest, some challenges you can use different editions, some you can only use the original title, it just depends on the challenge ☺ You would have to check the sign-up thread for the specific challenge to see what is allowed ☺

Kathryn (batkat08) Hello mods! I'm new to the group and I'm trying to start a Red Rising Series buddy read with another member. Someone helpfully pointed out that there is already a thread for that but it has been frozen. Would someone be able to unfreeze it so we can do a series discussion starting with book 2?

Like I said I'm new so if there's a better way to go about this let me know!
Thanks!
