In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis’s parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there’s no window. In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. If you don’t, punishment is brutal. As each new victim disappears to Back Half, Luke becomes more and more desperate to get out and get help. But no one has ever escaped from the Institute.

And then to find out he's been kidnapped and put into an institute with other kids, and they've all got either telekinetic or telepathic abilities? Oh, this is gonna be sooo good.

32% - (view spoiler)[Oh the Institute and the people 'running' it are awful. The tests and the treatment of the kids. Urgh. I felt sick reading the chapter where Luke is getting his eye test and one of the women keeps slapping him, AFTER HE'S HAD A SEIZURE! And when Luke thinks 'oh she doesn't see us as real children, we're just subjects so they can rationalise how they treat us then go home to their 'real children' and it was horrible. My heart is really hurting for these kids.

Also, I feel like Stephen King was like oh so Stranger Things was inspired by my work, so I'm gonna be inspired by that and it feels a little like that and the MKUltra stuff for sure! (hide spoiler)]

1% - couldn’t resist (bit of teen son badgering), but I do wonder if this is cashing-in on the excitement around part two of IT coming out.

62% - (view spoiler)[I feel bad for Maureen. Even if she was in on it, I feel like she was probably just trying to earn some money to pay off her debts, and helping Luke was her way of atoning before killing herself. Sad that Luke doesn't know this yet.. (hide spoiler)]

71% - (view spoiler)[WHY DON'T THEY JUST LOOK AT THE FLASH DRIVE?!?! I bet there's footage or something on there that will prove Luke right! (hide spoiler)]

4% - I was expecting a dramatic opening with the child being abducted. Not quite sure how our resident drifter Tim is linked to things, but it’s an intriguing start.

7% The Night Knocker. Slightly off expected focus, but I’m intrigued. King does small-town so well.

Finished - (view spoiler)[I have to admit, after all the action and gunfire and death, the ending was a little underwhelming. I expected catastrophic results after the kids took over the institutes, but it's left open-ended. I also wanted to know what happened to Stackhouse. Was he killed by the lisping man? Or did he escape? Why didn't Luke and Tim kill him?

I think we can all agree the true hero in this book is Avery. Rest in peace, little buddy :(

14% - The Smart Kid. Precociously clever,but just a child. Luke’s kidnapping was clinical.

22% - shots for dots. My first thought is that what’s going on doesn’t seem so bad, which immediately makes me suspicious there’s a lot we’re not being told and it’s probably terrifying.

37% - Maureen and Avery. Some unpleasant details of some of the tests being undertaken. Luke is certainly going to need to use everything he has to find out anything.

50% - Escape. Though you suspect it has to go that way, it’s still a pretty gutsy move from Luke. Do wonder how this will develop.

62% - Hell is Waiting. Luke is in danger. So close, and I’ve got my fingers tightly crossed that Tim will do his thing.

Hell is Here. So, don’t underestimate small-town Southern residents with guns...is there a chance this might work out for Luke?
