Tiffany | 25 comments Hi everyone!
My name is Tiffany and I just came across this group. It looks like it will be really fun to catch up on some of my books and to figure out which books to read for the challenges. I'm going to try to participate in as many as I can but I think I'll start with next month's challenges, as I have a lot going on this month between working 2 jobs and taking care of all the baby reptiles, since they are still hatching out. When do you usually post the challenges so that I can have time to figure out what to read?

message 2: by Kasia (last edited Sep 04, 2009 12:04PM) (new)

Kasia Hi! Welcome to the group.

We have several ongoing challenges that you can join anytime... pick and choose... whichever strike your fancy...

message 3: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany | 25 comments I do have a question though, I buy most of my books from SFBC.com and was wondering if the 2 in 1 or 3 in 1 books count as 1 or 2 or 3 books?

message 4: by Kasia (new)

Kasia I'll let you decide. Whichever way you feel comfortable. If making it count as 3 entries makes you feel like you're cheating, then make it 1. Otherwise just go for it and split them up. I sometimes use novellas and they are short. It's all fair play.

message 5: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany | 25 comments Ok. I just wanted to make sure that I'm following the rules. :)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Glad to have you aboard, Tiffany.

Categories for monthly challenge are usually posted a week before a new month starts.

Happy reading, and keep your little reptiles safe. :)

Redd77 (redd77) | 8 comments Hi everyone, my name is Stacey and I would really love to get involved with some of the reading challenges the group has. I kind of stick to the same genre since I don't have any luck when I try something new.(unless I try suggestions from my friends) I think having new suggestions from the group would open up a whole new genre for me!!
I also have one question, not to sound silly, but I was looking at the September monthly challenge and I was wondering what category #2 is specifically referring to. I'm anxious to start making my picks and see how many I can do, but I didn't want to get started with the wrong idea in mind!

Thanks bunches,

Stacey

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Stacey,

Predominantly most of us here read romance novels, but we do dipped our toes into other type of books. The challenge categories are pretty loose, so you can basically stick to your fave genre or explore, depending on your mood.

Category 2 refers to Group Members' who are celebrating their birthdays during the challenge month. It's basically just another reason to explore another person's shelf and get ideas.

Here is a link to this month's challenge discussion thread:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Message #4 gives you the links to September Birthday celebrants' profiles.

Hope that helps.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

message 10: by Redd77 (new)

Redd77 (redd77) | 8 comments Thanks for explaining. I felt kind of silly not figuring that out. I'm glad I can stay close to my romance novels also. I'm looking forward to starting the challenge with everybody.

message 11: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments No problem, Stacey.

Monthly challenge remains open all month-long, so if you feel like jumping in right now, even if its the middle of the month, you can do so.

There are also other type of challenges under the Other Challenges Folder. Some have specific end-date, some are open-ended and some depends on when you started. Feel free to browse and join any that interests you.

Furthermore, crosschallenging books are allowed, so you can read one book, and used it for maybe 2-3 challenges.

message 12: by Rhonda (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Welcome to the group, Rhonda. Feel free to join any discussions, and maybe if you feel like it, participate in any ongoing challenges.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Yz, thank you for doing such an excellent job explaining the rules. It certainly helps a Noob such as myself.

Julie sims and books | 4 comments Hooah! My name is ExoticRogue.(your all welcome to call me Rogue too if that is easier to remember.)lol. I own alot of books 1170+ and I've only read about 15 of em. LOL LOL. I love to read. I currently trying to beat my last record of 26 books read in 2006. I beat records 2008 of 4 books read (short huh...lol) and 2007 I had 12 books read. Currently for 2009 I have 20 books read so far....
Definately going to try and do some of the changelles you have each month as well.

message 16: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne Wilson | 5 comments My name is Jeanne and I am a romance junkie. Like most of the rest of you, I own a lot of books. It's definitely an addiction, but a good one. In the last year, I started listening to audiobooks on my iPod, which only fueled the addiction. I look forward to chatting with you all about our common interest.

message 17: by Mel W (new)

Mel W (melw) | 981 comments Welcome, Rogue and Jeanne!

message 18: by Julianna (new)

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 1888 comments Hey, it's the X-Men (women that is).;-)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Julie, I thought I was the only one who would be geeky enough to think that. If Mystique is the next person to join, we know we're on to something here.

message 20: by Julianna (new)

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 1888 comments LOL, Photojim! Yeah, I'm a card-carrying geek too. I wouldn't mind if Wolverine joined.;-)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments I think you really want Hugh Jackman to join. The actual Wolverine character is a bit too intense. (yes, I used to actually get X-Men delivered every month)

message 22: by Julianna (new)

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 1888 comments Guilty as charged! LOL!;-)

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments I thought of X-men too. I saw the movies at the movies and rented Wolverine and watched it no less than 2 times. Believe me 2 times is a record since I read more than anytime now a days =D.

message 26: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments I'm intrigued, what is jell-o-salad?

I'm from Sydney, Australia and I've no idea what it could be, apart from salad.

message 27: by Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (last edited Oct 09, 2009 07:47PM) (new)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments http://images.google.com/images?rlz=1... will give you pictures.

It is usually a desert formed from gelatin and some form of fruit. Note that a jell-o salad would never be found in a high society soiree. It is a small town america thing.

Before you judge too quickly, I've actually tasted vegemite. You have nothing to be proud of.

message 28: by Mel W (new)

Mel W (melw) | 981 comments Vegemite is definitely an acquired taste :) Which reminds me, must ask my FIL to bring us some when he visits later this month!

message 29: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments If jell-o-salad is jelly with fruit inside then this was popular in the '70s. And I totally understand the comfort factor.

As to Vegemite, it is fantastic! I love it on hot buttered toast :)

message 30: by tosca (new)

tosca (catatonichataholic) | 742 comments LOL@you have nothing to be proud of. Marmite's yum, too - on toast with melted butter :)

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm new to the group and goodreads as well. (Looking for goodreafs friends, if your interested). The challenges look like tons of fun. I do think a challenge becomes more personal with the type of books you pick out, compared to monthly group reads. I'm also looking forward to jumping into some of the conversations.

message 32: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Welcome, Elyssa. Feel free to pick any challenge that you feel like joining.

Hope you visit us often.

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments From one BDB addict to another, welcome to the group, Stephanie!

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Stephanie, jump in where you can. You may just surprise yourself with your ability to read much more than you previously surmised. GL to you in your future endeavors. (*DP)

message 36: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Hi Everyone. My name is Kelly I think some of you are in other groups that I belong to as well.
I have been on a romance kick so I thought this group would give me some great book ideas. I read 21 books in October ( Now I know why my house is a mess). I think I may be ready to try a reading challenge.

message 37: by Zoe (new)

Zoe Mc Hey, I'm Zoe. This is my first group and it looks great. I have got to admit I am always a Romance fanatic when reading books but I have been running out of books to read as of late.
I can't wait to join some of the challenges soon :-P.

Zoe Mc Indeed I will :-) Thankyou for the welcome

message 40: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cindya) Hi, My name is Cindy, and I just joined this group. I am really looking forward to the December challenge as I am always looking for new authors and books to read.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Welcome, welcome, and welcome! No need to wait to December, pick any five categories for the November monthly or do what you can for the reading the month. You'll quickly see that the romance portion is not truly a requirement. You are just as likely to see a mystery or something else pop up on people's challenge lists.

message 42: by Mel W (new)

Mel W (melw) | 981 comments Welcome to our newest members! Besides the monthly challenges, there are some quarterly ones that you may find appealing also.

message 43: by Kasia (new)

Kasia Photojim wrote: "You'll quickly see that the romance portion is not truly a requirement. You are just as likely to see a mystery or something else pop up on people's challenge lists. "

True that. Romance is welcome but not required. Actually, if you look at the stuff I read there's hardly any romance there nowadays...

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 987 comments Hi I'm Carrie and I'm a new this group. I must say you have some interesting reading challenges, and I can't wait to try some of them out. I love reading, I will admit it has slowed down a bit, I have a 20 month old daughter so I grab my chances when I can.
