Damn sorry this is all so confusing to me.

Yes, just on the reporting thread. The one with your name was for your personal planning purposes. The reporting thread is easy too.

Melissa Reads (minxreadsalot) | 2485 comments Guess WHAT?? We have our first MINI-CHALLENGE!! Its starts next week and only counts for books read in week 3. I am going to link it here for you to look at and then you can come back to this thread with any questions. Shelby will be adding the animals to the spreadsheet and I will be back later to discuss questions. :D

Mini-Challenge

message 419: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments I love mini - challenges. They bring out my competitive streak. they may cause me to read more.

message 420: by Melissa (last edited Oct 18, 2019 07:22AM) (new)

Melissa Reads (minxreadsalot) | 2485 comments Ok about the mini-challenge:

Week 3 we will need to choose if our books are going towards the Sin books or Animal books. When you complete a book you should also list what animals were found so that we can figure out how the book should be used.

I have only 1 book that has a tricky animal but I have 5 books that I plan to read next week that have easy animals in them.

My tricky Animal is:

Macaw

Easy animals on planned reads are:

Cougar
Wolf
Dragonfly
Rat
bat

I also have books that fit for dog and cat.

So if we could find six more books that had tricky animals that weren’t duplicates then we could make a tricky collection for the additional 69 points. (49 + 20).

I think that do an easy collection is going to be easy for us BUT we have to keep in mind that once as a team we find an animal once it is only worth 1 point after the first time. Basically, we shouldn’t all be reading books with cats on covers.

Something to note, if you have low page books that don’t really qualify for anything (Color, Genre, Criteria) BUT have an animal then this is a great challenge to use them for.

Shelby is going to be adding a tab to the spreadsheet with the animals listed on it for referencing.

Thanks much better. I'm at about 90% right now. I will look for tricky animals. Will page count matter kr just the animal?

Page points count the same, animal points are on top of that. I would appreciate your time looking for a tricky animal to make our collection.

If you find a tricky animal with a low page count I would still read it anyhow because we get 7 points if its the first tricky animal of that kind :D

message 425: by Mamacita aka MawMaw (last edited Oct 17, 2019 02:41PM) (new)

Mamacita aka MawMaw (mamawantsbedtimestory) | 441 comments I don't have any tricky animals. I can find Hedgehog, dog, horse, cat. I can also have a wolf, bear or *dragon (not sure if that counts). Just let me know which you want me to read.

I know of a great HR book that has a goat, an otter, a sheep in it. Too bad it doesn't count till next week because I have a book with a horse in it right now.

Dragon doesn't count, lol, unless it's a bearded dragon.

Any of the animals you mentioned would be fine (except for wolf, lol, because I have to read a book with one of those on the cover which would make two wolves not as valuable points wise). If I had a preference it would be any of them besides the dog and cat - only because those are most common and easiest to find.

message 427: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments I tried to find some tricky animals at work but my head was going to explode, looking for some right now!

I think I understand this, might have a few questions once I come up with some things.

message 428: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Reads (minxreadsalot) | 2485 comments No worries on questions. Fire away when you come up with them. If you don’t find any tricky animals don’t worry, we can just build some easy collections.

Also, remember That the Animal can be on the cover, in the title or in the text.

In the text the animal needs to be an actual animal or a discussion about an actual animal. Can’t be a smilie or metaphorical animal.

message 429: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments I found this one, I don't super want to read this though because these kinds of books are depressing, trying to find a few others!

Beneath the Surface Killer Whales, SeaWorld, and the Truth Beyond Blackfish by John Hargrove for killer whale

message 430: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Reads (minxreadsalot) | 2485 comments Let’s keep that book as a possibility because enjoying the book you read is more important than anything else.

message 431: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1978 comments Ok everyone so here would be my suggestion of priority when assigning your book to it's spot...

Tricky Animal (1st sighting)
Sin Bingo
Easy Animal (1st sighting)
Cover Color
Top Shelf
Everything else

Logic being you can only use the 1st sighting of an animal for the collections so those gain you more points than their equivalent Sin options, but once you've found it once more points are found qualifying it by the top two sin options.

message 432: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1978 comments Also - I've got Hammerhead shark for next week on the tricky's. :D

Melissa Reads (minxreadsalot) | 2485 comments Shelby wrote: "Also - I've got Hammerhead shark for next week on the tricky's. :D"

Nice! That is 2 confirmed tricky reads.

Minx - Macaw
Shelby - Hammerhead

:D

message 434: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1978 comments Alright there's a planning spreadsheet up for the animals. Please check off an animal you plan on reading so we don't duplicate. Also I wrote out some spots to start building collections as well. :) As an animal is posted to the reporting sheet as completed I'll highlight the box so we know that it isn't still being planned but is actually read.

message 435: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1978 comments Everything's updated on our sheets - we're sitting at 19 books read right now. I'll update to the main spreadsheet tomorrow. :)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Ok for the animals, I am currently reading For the Killing of Kings by Howard Andrew Jones but will finish it next week and there is in the background shadow of a horse visible. Can it count?

As for tricky animals, I found in the text of the book:
angelfish - Hollow World ("Ellis watched a small school of striped angelfish flash by." - pg142)
Can it work?

message 438: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 3008 comments thanks for all the birthday wishes everyone, I had a great day but was also way too exhausted to still check in last night. I did see the mini challenge and read through it before I fell asleep, but I definitely need to go over it again today.

does anyone know if Wilder Girls has some animals in it maybe? probably not, but I was thinking about starting it soon (bought myself a physical copy yesterday :})

may I suggest for the spreadsheet to also include who's reading the animal, which book, and read date?

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments Did anyone have something planned for snake already? I was going to start Ninth House (Alex Stern, #1) by Leigh Bardugo today but I can save it for next week if we don't have a snake already. I didn't want to put it on the sheet as the first one and take an animal someone already had planned!

There is no snake yet. On the spreadsheet there is a tab for the Mini-challenge now, there are check boxes for animals and you can head over there and grab the check box for the snake. :D

We are keeping track of the animals, including which one's work for tricky or easy on the mini-challenge tab but when the book is reported it still goes on the reporting thread with the details under the justification. Just not Sin Criteria will be chosen.

If you'd like you can include the book etc next to the animal in the collection column :D
