It is pretty involved. I think it's one of those challenges that you can get the hang of pretty fast, though.

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 3473 comments I'm hoping to sit down with a few 100-200 page books today. I realized that all the books I'm reading are 475 pages to 950 pages long. I think it's time to bring in some shorties. :)

How are you all doing with your reading? Have you read anything good lately?

I am reading all good ones: The Last Lion 1 Visions of Glory 1874-1932 by William R. Manchester The Good Earth (House of Earth, #1) by Pearl S. Buck and finally Mudbound by Hillary Jordan I love them all amost equally, the Last Lion is really good but the author likes to inform the readers all the sexual escapades of various people, there is a long list of lovers that he thinks we need to know that Winston's mother had. Yawn, yawn....I skipped the list lol. Mudbound I almost ditched because it seemed a bit scattered at first, but now loving it. The Good Earth, well, it is a classic of beautiful writing.

Amanda....Shorties are good! I hope to follow you at some point but right now, I have several looming such as The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky yep, a long one, in which I think that you'll be joining me on that one? I am thinking of starting it on the 18th or 19th of this month. Well, that is my update for now.

Yeah, I'll be joining in on that one as soon as I can. I want to read a few shorter books to get back in the game and help the team out, then hopefully finish at least one of my other books.

I'm going to be very busy sewing and spinning soon, so thank goodness for audiobooks!

message 906: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments I've been in a bit of a rut - lots of 3/3.5 star books, not many 4 or 5. About to start A Hidden Fire (Elemental Mysteries, #1) by Elizabeth Hunter , which I've heard good things about, so fingers crossed!

message 907: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I am reading The Janus Stone (Ruth Galloway #2) by Elly Griffiths , Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys , The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks and have just started Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke

I would recommend both Out of The Easy and The Longest Ride. I suspect they both might get 4*'s from me.

message 908: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments I loved Out of the Easy, Laura. We read it for my RL YA book club a few months ago, and it's been one of my favorite picks of that group.

Its so good! I am so close to finishing it.. I am trying to hold off to wait for my buddy read partner. I am quite a ways ahead of her now (view spoiler)

Marla | 1804 comments Just finished The Rise of Nine (Lorien Legacies, #3) by Pittacus Lore and I'm so disappointed with this series. The first book was action packed and interesting and the last 2 books have not been nearly as good.

Reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and it's sad but good.

I agree, Marla! I loved the first one too. I have read all the others and they are good but not as good as the first one.
Glass castle was a great read. Have you tried The Silver Star also by Jeannette Walls?

Laura | 9707 comments Hi everyone, I am hoping you are all enjoying the weekend!
I am reading The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey and I recommend it highly! I think most of you will like it. Its a buddy read (from December) and I will finish it tonight!

Hey Laura!

That one sounds pretty good. I'll have to check it out.
I'm reading A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, #4) by George R.R. Martin , Luck in the Shadows (Nightrunner, #1) by Lynn Flewelling , and Stan and Ollie The Roots of Comedy The Double Life of Laurel and Hardy by Simon Louvish . I'm enjoying all of them quite a bit, It's just been slow going :).

message 919: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 3473 comments @Kerry Anne- The spreadsheet isn't picking up that you've read Poison by Bridget Zinn . Can you check that it's on your Poisonous Toadstools shelf?

Thanks!

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments I just started two new books (this weekend was really hectic because of helping with an IEA horse show, and I got very little reading done. Dumb horse kept trying to eat my book ;) )

Tiny Beautiful Things Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar by Cheryl Strayed and A Hidden Fire (Elemental Mysteries, #1) by Elizabeth Hunter . So far, both are really good!

Hehehe :) Maybe the horse wanted to get a little reading done too.
I've been thinking about reading The Hidden Fire. I love books that have librarians in them!

message 922: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments I'm about half way through it, and loving it so far. It's really an interesting take on paranormal themes, I like the heroine, and librarians are the best. I might have finally broken my slump with this one!

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 5684 comments Hey all

Just finished Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling for the first time. I liked.

Also reading Moloka'i by Alan Brennert and The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss . About 20% read in each and liking both so far.

When is the last day of the read-a-thon?

message 924: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments If I remember correctly, I think it's the 18th.

This is my first Jeannette Walls book. I like it, but it is tragically sad. I've started a list of how many times someone's life was in jeopardy...makes you appreciate your own family.

I have one in the works too. What is the page count on yours?
We need a 900+ page book and a 750-900 page book, right?
I'm reading a 900+ page book right now but I can switch to a 750 pager if no one has one going.

Amanda are you talking about our mini-challenge? I am reading The Last Lion 1 Visions of Glory 1874-1932 by William R. Manchester which is 997 pages. That should go in that slot for the 900+

Ok, so I am going to put A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, #4) by George R.R. Martin aside for the moment and focus on a slightly smaller book (750-899 pages).

How is The Last Lion, btw? I'm curious about it but still wary of biographies.

It is good and I love reading about Churchill but the endless details of politics and who did what is mind boggling. I love hearing what it was like back then but wham, bombarded with English and world politics. It is a love/hate read though I am finding out that Churchill was one very cool person! I wouldn't mind looking at those books of yours that he wrote.

I am slowly reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke . This book is long but my copy reads in at 804 pages. I'll keep chugging along( and make a more valiant effort ) but it might be nice to have a back up!

Ok! I'll find a book as backup and start it today. I seem to keep picking up doorstoppers :).

are you starting now? I think I'll start by the 18th, so that way I'll be able to get a couple of reads out of the way, perhaps three! yippee! bookworming right along :)

message 945: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 3473 comments I'm not going to start quite yet since it won't count toward the 750-900 page category. I'm going to start The Passage (The Passage, #1) by Justin Cronin today and The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky in a few days.
I can't wait! I've heard that it is an amazing book.

Are you sure Amanda that it won't count? My copy of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke is 846 and usually its over 1000 pages. Karen said I could override it up or leave as is to count for that particular book count. Seems like you could do the same for yours if it applies. ( lol. if all that makes sense!)

Oh, I didn't realize we could do that (bad mod!) lol

I started The Passage and I'm very intrigued, so I'll probably stick with that one for now. Though I really should start the other for a buddy read. :)

Marla | 1804 comments FINALLY finished City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments, #5) by Cassandra Clare . It was disappointing. I wish that Cassandra Clare had stopped writing after the first 3 OR that she could trim out all the filler and shorten the books OR that I could just stop myself from having to finish the series.
