Hard Case Crime discussion

So this was my first Erle Stanley Gardner novel. Would people say this is typical of his work? A lesser read? Is this his normal style which is sort of Columbo (TV show) level of violence with just mainly threats of further harm? I liked parts of it (particularly his dialogue) and he's reveal was very elaborate and clever (too clever?).
