I have a book called "The story of Canada." It's a few years old now but lots of pictures and a good overview.

A.L. Sowards | 27 comments Hi, I'm Amanda, but I usually go by A.L. on goodreads. I love a good history book, and I love it even more when it meets this group's requirements. Lately I've been reading mostly WWII and WWI stuff, but I'm trying to branch out to other time periods too.

message 113: by Nissa (new)

Nissa (nevans1972) | 3 comments Right now I am currently reading The Orpheus Clock by Simon Goodman. So far it is a good read. If you like reading holocaust stories/nazi/stolen art than you will like this book. I am like Amanda and tend to read WW2 books, but have been trying other books out. Like Sister of Treason by Elizabeth Fremantle. It is based in 16th century England. I am really fascinated by the lifestyle of that period.

message 118: by G.G. (new)

G.G. Grace | 1 comments Hello, everyone. My name is Greg (GG Grace) and I joined because of two reasons; the first was that I love ancient Greece. I loved it so much that I ended writing a historical novel about it, Sophronikos, Son of Sokrates. I tried to see if it fit into the guidelines, but the site didn't come up. On my Goodreads page, I've posted numerous history/scholarly books that I came upon while writing. When I get the chance I'll post reviews of them. There are many resources for this period, and if someone needs a hand let me know. I'll be glad to help.

message 128: by Peter (new)

Peter (pdinuk) | 21 comments Hello, my name is Peter, living in the UK. I found the History Book Club too large and daunting. I read all kinds of history, but particularly 20th Century history as it relates to current international relations, my teaching subject.

I'm going to pop over to the Second World War section and suggest a new book by a close relative. I know it sounds suspicious, but I think it's timely and legitimate. Readers can make up their own minds about it. Thanks for the clear rules.

Lisa Hi all! My name is Lisa, I'm from The Netherlands and I just joined this group. Always looking for a good book, especially if it's Ancient Greece or Rome related.
I love how well organized this page seems! Can't wait to make my way through all the sections in the discussion board :)

Hello Lisa! Let me extend my welcome to the group. Sorry it's a bit late! You're from The Netherlands? Beautiful! I've always wanted to go there.

Thank you for joining and saying hi. Have fun, and I hope to see you around!

Cheers!
Ethan

message 134: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Thanks both Rick and Ethan for the warm welcome!

Rick, how are you liking the Pax Romana book so far? Adding it to my ever-growing wishlist, thanks for the recommendation.

It too me a few chapters to warm to it but I am enjoying it. Have you read Mary Beard's book SPQR? That's another book that too me a little bit of time to get into but then really enjoyed.

SPQR A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard

message 136: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Glad you're enjoying it.
I haven't read SPQR yet, but I do own the book! It's on my to-read pile. Heard good things about it!

I first want to go through all the Greek stuff I got lying around, before I move on to the Romans, haha. Just trying to think of a system to get through that big pile of books ;)

So much to read, so little time...

Els (els-the-epical) | 1 comments Hello! I'm Sierra, and I happen to adore history. Unfortunately, I can't even pick up a book anymore without reading THE ENTIRE PLOT SUMMARY (Ouch!) on wikipedia or goodreads to make sure it's safe for my poor, innocent mind. Even then I often hit terrible parts. This is the group for me! My favorite historical time period to read about is either the French Revolution or Medieval Europe. Looking forward to this!

Cheers!

message 141: by Valerie (last edited Nov 22, 2016 06:04AM) (new)

Valerie Protopapas | 10 comments I have joined, but apparently am not able to navigate the site. I would like to "introduce myself," but I'm not sure if this is where (or how) to do so. I wanted to suggest a book but efforts to go to the "group rules" sites are not successful. First, let me say that, at 75, my idea of "hi-tech" is the flush toilet. So obviously I have failed to do something or done something wrong. Therefore, I would hope that one of the administrators would give me a hand so that I may participate more meaningfully? Thank you. Valerie

P.S. I found the site and have recommended the book (I think).

I tend to read more about mythology and religion, but I also enjoy reading about philosophy and everyday life in antiquity. I find the Middle Ages interesting as well.
