Wholesome History Reads Group discussion
Main Thread
Hi everyone! The group's official website is coming soon. It will also feature the "What's Considered Wholesome?" guide for judging if a book is wholesome or not. Some other pretty cool features are on the site too. I should have the website done in the next few days. So stay tuned for the grand release of the group's official website!
Hello everyone! The group's official website is now live at www.whrg.webs.com! If you would like to, please tell me what you think of the website, here. I always value feedback.
Note: It may take a few hours from the time of this message to be fully online, so if it doesn't load, just wait a while and check it later. Please let me know if it still doesn't work.
Enjoy your reading!

Hey thanks, Geevee! Yes, I decided to do the FAQs a little differently and make them more interesting to read. Glad you like it!

Hello everyone!
If you would like to, please vote in our new poll, "What is your favorite time in history to read about?" It can be found on the home page. You can also leave comments here telling us why you chose a certain era.
Enjoy, and have fun!

Hello everyone! I'm currently on holidays with my family, so the posts will be somewhat intermittent. I will try my best, though, to keep up on the posts. Keep suggesting wholesome books, chat, and have fun!
Warm regards,
Ethan
P.S. I will probably be back home in the next week. I'll let you all know when I've returned from our holiday.

Yes! Thanks for asking. I really enjoyed it; plus, I bought a bunch of books. That was one of the highlights! :D
Have a wonderful new year everyone! I hope that 2015 will be an even better year for discovering more wholesome History reads.
Hello everyone!
I'm going away again for about a week. I'm not sure how active I'll be keeping up on the posts etc. but I'll try to get on as much as possible. Please don't stop posting, though! Have lots of fun and I'll catch up on the posts when I get back.
Warm regards,
Ethan
P.S. Thanks Rick and Geevee for looking after the group while I'm way! By the way, Rick, your promise not to wreck the place last time made me laugh. See you both when I get back! ;-)

Hey everyone! I'm back now! I enjoyed my trip....
Hold it! What was that about a clandestine book raid? Yikes! Obviously the mission must have been aborted at the last minute.... I counted my books three times to make sure they were all there! Maybe I should increase my security measures next time before I leave. Sure glad you guys called off the raid. Rick would have been invisible in his camo gear! ;-)
Anyway, glad to be back. I'll be able to regularily keep up on the posts now. Have fun, everyone!
P.S. Yay! We are at 20 members! Woohoo!

We do the same to AR's library when he is away so you're in good company, but also include his wine celler - I'm the permanent designated driver - somebody has to make sure everyone gets back to their sleeping places safely :)
Sorry I've been inactive for a while there! We had friends come over from out of town plus a friend from out of the country so we've been super busy. I should be on more regularly now. Cheers!

P.S. Glad you had a wonderful time and Welcome Back!
@Wanda LOL! I'm sure glad you missed it. It sounds like my books wouldn't stand a chance at all against you. Thanks for not turning up to the raid briefings! XD
I downloaded a new app called Scribd. It's a book reading service like Netflix where you can read as many ebooks as you want for about $8 a month. It looks great! I normally like reading real books but this is great because it has a lot of books I can't find elsewhere. Has anyone tried it?
Cheers!
Cheers!
I haven't and whilst we have a few types of kindles and other tablets/devices etc in the house I'm a e-book refusenik. I just like real print and proper old books :)

@Geevee I totally understand! I love the feel of a real book in my hands. Nothing beats that. But sometimes it's tough to find books I want to read so I (reluctantly) signed up to it. We also travel a lot so it's easier to read on my iPad than cart around a bunch of books. I totally agree with you though. Nothing beats a real book! ;-)
Hello group members! I have a couple questions below that I would love for you to answer if you have some time. Thanks! Here are the questions:
1) I would like to boost popularity of this group and make it more fun for the members. What would you like to see in the group or features you would like added or to see more of?
2) I am thinking of creating an Instagram account where once or twice a week I post a photo of a time in history and explain a bit about the historical significance of the photo. I would like to know if you would like to see this and if any of you actually use Instagram.
3) Are you enjoying the group so far? Please let me know and please be honest!
Those are the questions. It would really be great if you could take the time to answer them and share your thoughts on the group. Thank you in advance for helping improve WHRG and making it better for everybody!
Cheers!

Hi Ethan. As per your Instagram idea, I'm a member and I follow a good three or four historical instagrams similar to what you're talking about doing. I feel like if you're going to open an account it needs to have something new or unique that the others don't already have. Maybe if, for instance, you post about the 150th Anniversary of Lincolns Assassination (since today is that day) sure the historical significance could be discussed by followers but be sure to also recommend good books pertaining to the assisination of Lincoln. Or what other ideas were you thinking about doing with the account? I think this is the only goodreads group I'm a member of that actually messages it's members and I enjoy that. Another group does polls to vote on read a thon subjects. This way the group is more interactive. I hope my few suggestions help!
Thank you for your suggestions, Megan! I will definitely implement your ideas, i.e. Polls etc. Thank you again for the compliments and the ideas!
I'm not on Instagram (kids are) but I think the idea is good Ethan and linked to Megan's suggestions looks a winner. As for making the group more active again I think Megan has a good idea on polls.
Hopefully, one of the things we do as a group is help expand each others reading lists and maybe like the WWII book group people can ask for suggestions (perhaps linked to the polls idea around say events/anniversaries etc).

Good ideas Megan and Geevee. One thing to remember Ethan that groups sometimes take a lot of time to get going.
@Rick Thanks! Ok, I'll keep that in mind.
@Geevee! Thank you for the suggestions. I agree with your suggestion about book suggestions.
@EveryoneI now have an idea of what I think I would like to add to the group to make it better for everyone. Thank you everyone for your input. It has been invaluable! Stay tuned for some new, exciting features!

@Everyone it seems like everyone is immensely enjoying the GUESS THE PHOTO and Historical Photos thread which means a lot to me. So glad you like it! If you have any other ideas of threads, games, etc. be sure to let me know. I'm always looking for ways I can make this group more fun for everyone. Thank you for your enthusiastic support, and happy reading!
