One of the best books I've read on this subject is,

A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century

If you enjoy reading historical fiction books about the Hundred Years War here's the link to a list I created at Listopia.

Feel free to add any books that aren't already on the list.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) I am looking for a good, factual book on the fall of Singapore. I was going to read Sinister Twilight: The Fall of Singapore but the library doesn't have it and I am trying to keep from buying books for two months (fat chance!!). Any suggestions?

Hi Jill, I'd recommend this. I got a lot of info and enjoyed the author's style and writing with good sources.

Singapore Burning Heroism And Surrender In World War II by Colin Smith Singapore Burning: Heroism And Surrender In World War II by Colin Smith

Geevee's recommendation is spot on Jill, its an excellent account. One other book to consider is:

The Battle for Singapore The True Story of the Greatest Catastrophe of World War II by Peter Thompson The Battle for Singapore: The True Story of the Greatest Catastrophe of World War II by Peter Thompson

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Thanks, guys. I always trust your recommendation.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Keep the recommendations coming. I am searching all the libraries in the county and have yet to find the three books mentioned.

Jonny | 283 comments I've only read one book on the fall of Singapore, to my shame, and i can't remember what it was called. However I very much can recommend Middlebrook and Mahoney's Battleship The Loss Of The Prince Of Wales And The Repulse (Penguin Classic Military History) by Martin Middlebrook Battleship: The Loss Of The Prince Of Wales And The Repulse, which covers the famous naval action at the start of the campaign.

Liz V. (wwwgoodreadscomlizv) | 24 comments Just came across mention of Rare Books Uncovered: True Stories of Fantastic Finds in Unlikely Places by Rebecca Rego Barry. Seems to be catalog of wow moments, but may offer some new venues for elusive books. Brought to mind John Dunning's Bookman series.

My library is very successful at finding books through inter-library loan, at no cost to me and usually not to the libraries except for postage.

A.L. Sowards | 27 comments Has anyone read a good book about the 1683 Siege of Vienna?

I was looking up a few. Aussie Rick, which of these did you like more?

The Enemy at the Gate Habsburgs, Ottomans and the Battle for Europe by Andrew Wheatcroft The Enemy at the Gate: Habsburgs, Ottomans and the Battle for Europe by Andrew Wheatcroft
or
The Siege of Vienna The Last Great Trial Between Cross and Crescent by John Stoye The Siege of Vienna: The Last Great Trial Between Cross and Crescent by John Stoye

I think out of those two I preferred Andrew Wheatcroft's book, although I read it some time back I think it was the more extensive account.

Boudewijn (boudalok) | 15 comments After reading The Roman Empire and the Silk Routes: The Ancient World Economy & the Empires of Parthia, Central Asia & Han China I got interested in Alexander the Great. Are there any good recommendations for a biography?

Glad you asked Bou :)

I found this book to be a very good introduction to the subject, informative and very easy to read:

Alexander the Great by Philip Freeman Alexander the Great by Philip Freeman

This is the latest book I read on Alexander the Great, also a pretty good account:

Alexander the Great His Life and His Mysterious Death by Anthony Everitt Alexander the Great: His Life and His Mysterious Death by Anthony Everitt

Ryann | 24 comments I’m looking for a book that delves into the events that led to the American Revolutionary War. I was hoping that Rick Atkinson would have touched on it, since he is writing 3 books about the war, but he did not. Any suggestions or knowledge of such books would be welcome! Thank you.

I have two books in mind that may help, it would be worth your while to further investigate if these two books cover what you need:

The Glorious Cause The American Revolution, 1763-1789 by Robert Middlekauff The Glorious Cause: The American Revolution, 1763-1789 by Robert Middlekauff

1776 by David McCullough 1776 by David McCullough
