This topic is open for discussion about The Gunslinger by Stephen King.

Book synopsis:
This heroic fantasy is set in a world of ominous landscape and macabre menace that is a dark mirror of our own. A spellbinding tale of good versus evil, it features one of Stephen King's most powerful creations - The Gunslinger, a haunting figure who embodies the qualities of a lone hero through the ages, from ancient myth to frontier western legend.

I've wanted to read this for a long time, but I can't get to it for a while.

Ghost in the Stacks I am good with any date.

We can always wait a week and Start Nov 3rd. This way it's the same week Tower begins, and we have a little head start.

Anita Reads | 1677 comments My brother has been bugging me to read this since forever. I won't have time to start on it in November, but December would be a good month for me. How does that sound for you?

Greta | 1459 comments November 3rd is fine with me but I'm fine waiting also.

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I just checked the library, and they have it home, so I would be able to start on Nov. 3rd if that's what you decide. I just won't be able to read that fast as I have 12 other books I have to read during November. So for me it would be awesome if we could start in December.

Sunshine✰✰✰ | 313 comments I JUST read this book last month! :) I found it to be a tough read for me. I still plan on reading the series but it's going to take me awhile.

Sanskriti Nagar | 318 comments I got a copy of the book today :D I'm good to go any time you guys decide to begin reading.

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I'd love to join this during the Tower Teams :D I'll check back later to see what you all decide as a start date.

message 13: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments I'll join in too - I've heard only good things about the series. I'm okay with any date in November.

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I've heard that the first is the hardest to get through, as it's pretty weird. :P

Kristie | 3595 comments This is a great series. I've also heard from a lot of people that the first one was their least favorite, but it was the one that drew me into the series. Of course, I read it a zillion years ago. This was one of those series where I couldn't wait for the next one to be released. If you all continue with the series, I'd love to jump in on The Wind Through the Keyhole (#4.5). I pre-ordered it (I was so excited!), then didn't have a chance to read it. This will be the perfect opportunity.

Anita Reads | 1677 comments Just wanted to let you know that I'll be ready to start the 3rd. Just borrowed it at the library.
So whenever fits you best (I thought it was a lot longer actually, so I don't think it will be a problem fitting it into my reading plan)

Greta | 1459 comments Looks like Nov 3rd works well!!

Anita Reads | 1677 comments I was just thinking. What happens when 2 from the same team joins in on a buddy read?
Because Abbie and I are on the same team, will it only be one of us who gets credited for reading a buddy read with one from another team or how does that work?

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments That's a good question for the mods. You should drop a line in the Questions thread and see what they say... but I'd assume since each person read the book and was involved in the discussion then they'd each get credit. But that's an assumption!

Greta | 1459 comments I did read somewhere that both readers count as long as there us someone from another team reading also.

Anita Reads | 1677 comments Ok. I'll ask in the TT Questions thread to be sure :)

Ghost in the Stacks Awesome! Nov 3rd will be great!
Greta is right, as ling as there is one person from another team in on the read, which it seems we will have multiple!

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok yeah this sounds perfect for me! So glad we started this one up. I've been meaning to read this series for ever.

Vi | 1758 comments Steven wrote: "I've heard that the first is the hardest to get through, as it's pretty weird. :P"

Oookkk. I'm going in prepared for it then.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm going to just order the box set from Amazon. Why not, right? lol

message 26: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments LOL! Me too, Kristin. And that everybody raves about it. That's pretty much all I know.

Kristin wrote: "I just happened to be at the library and it was on the end cap of an aisle. It was fate."

Wow it really was!

Anita Reads | 1677 comments My brother says that it's his favorite books of him. So I'm looking forward to starting it.

Abbie, yes they said in the Questions thread, that as long as there's a team member from another team on the buddy read we'll bot get points for joining it :)

message 30: by Rosina (new)

Rosina | 1800 comments I will join in on this too...been wanting to read this series for sometime....looks pretty mind warping..

message 31: by Ange (new) - rated it 2 stars

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments I tried this years ago and dnf'ed it. I don't think I was in the right reading space for this book at the time and would love to join in and try again.

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments I would like to join this discussion. :)

Anita Reads | 1677 comments My brother told me that the first book was a little boring, but to definitely read the second book before deciding if it's worth reading onward, because that's when it starts getting really awesome.

Justin (rockstarintraining) I have read through the first four books of the series. If you are a King fan, the first book is much different than his typical novels, but he is back to form by the second book. If you all keep going, I would live to jump in later and finish the series.

Ghost in the Stacks Just waiting for my copy to come in!

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Abbie wrote: "Just waiting for my copy to come in!"

Me too! Got mine from Paperback Swap and it's taking a little longer than I expected. I have 2 and 3 from there though.

Allison Ann | 1408 comments I was hoping this read would be a bit later as I'm currently reading The Stand by Stephen King and that could be a bit too much concentrated King for the week, but oh well. If my mind is irrevocably destroyed probably no one will notice anyway. :D I'm in.

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments Don't worry Allison I'm in the same boat. I'm reading 'Salem's Lot. So, it's a lot of King going on right now.

Cynthia (cynthiab) It's been a long time since I read The Dark Tower series, but I don't remember The Gunslinger being especially difficult to get through.

I'm reading the same version I read years ago, which is unrevised and comes in at about 180 pp. That's practically a novella. I probably should break down and spend the money for the new and improved 300 pp one, but I can't imagine it needing any more than what it already has.

message 40: by Ange (new) - rated it 2 stars

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments I didn't realise there was a new version. I've got the old version too.

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments I'm in for this book. I started it today and I have the old version too. Has anyone started? What do you think about the beginning of the story?

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I am still waiting...impatiently :(

message 43: by Rosina (new)

Rosina | 1800 comments I think the one I have on hold is the newer version....I am hoping to start later in the week when its in

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments I guess I'll slow down so that others get theirs. It ok because I have other books to finish :)
Taryn love the picture and I understand fully :)

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments I have the newer kindle edition. I'm about half way through and enjoying it.

Allison Ann | 1408 comments RachelvlehcaR wrote: "Don't worry Allison I'm in the same boat. I'm reading 'Salem's Lot. So, it's a lot of King going on right now."

It's all King, all the time. :)

I didn't start the book today either. And I have the next couple of days off work (where I do most of my reading), with tons of things scheduled so I suspect I won't really get reading until Thursday.

I got the newer version from the library. I don't remember the original though, it was almost 30 years ago after all.

Ghost in the Stacks I am picking it up tomorrow after work...hopefully..
Got the email today, but my daughter has a concert after school, so I didn't get time to get it today.

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments It is King all the time. I am happy I am over the half way mark.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

I actually never read a King novel until a couple of months ago I read The Shining. I liked it soooo much more than i thought I would.

Ghost in the Stacks What????I have been reading King since I was twelve!...probably shouldn't have been...but I was.

My Life, and the Great state of Maine, would be boring without him!
