Shifter Variations
1} Animal Shifters:
Shifters, when they reached the age of 16, they go through this ritual that determines what type of shifter they are. The ritual is sort of like a right of passage. When you change into your shifter form the shifter is reflected off a part of your soul. I'm sure you've heard of werewolves? The wolf symbolizes leader, loyal. Usually the Alpha is a Wolf, and they say that the Alpha's kin, only one will be the next Alpha, and they will tell if it's a wolf or not. Trouble is sometimes all of the kin is wolves, and then they have to fight to be the Alpha, and no one can back down.
2} Shape-Shifters
When a Shifter has the ability to change his appearance, it generally means that it went dark. He or she was envious, or a liar. These people usually try to start trouble, or find a place where they feel like they belong. Be warned most of these types of shifters will murder you if you piss them off.
3} Skin-walkers
One of the oldest known breeds of Shifters, they are born firmly within their own skin. For them, the pleasure of changing forms is an honour earned, not given. For a young Skin-Walker, they are made to meditate on their chosen form, learning to taste, see, smell, hear, and touch as they do. It is not an easy task, and can take decades to master the understanding needed to take their form.
When a Skin-Walker has reached the highest form of understanding, they are sent into the forests and swamps to hunt. They collect bone and tooth and fur, fashioning themselves a second skin. It is from this cloak that they take their second shape, most commonly in the form of coyote, wolf, fox, eagle, owl, or crow.
For a Skin-Walker, their fur is their most prized possession. To be separated from it is to be torn from half their consciousness. Without it, they lose the ability to change their shape, and many often go mad.
Population Size: Small
Lifespan: 200 years
Abilities: Shape-changing, enhanced senses
