After carefully reading goodreads’ API terms of use I saw no mentions for its use in academic projects.
Currently, I’m working on a research project that aims to study how sort opinions.
Therefore, I would like to apply machine learning techniques to rank the reviews on goodreads and compare the results (using information retrieval metrics) to the stand goodreads algorithm.
As any other research project, I intend to publish the results on journals and congresses, just like my advisor have been doing (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/...).
However, I have no intention store, distribute or use the data for nonacademic purposes, only the code that I intend to write would be opensource so any other researcher could analyze my work.
Hence, I would like to know if it is allowed to use the API for this kind of work?
I believe you need explicit written permission to do this. I'm also working on an academic project so I emailed them and within a day or two they emailed back giving me the ok.
